Good news & bad news about TV volume

The FCC has passed a regulation requiring broadcasters to keep the volume at a steady level, no blasting commercials. I sure welcome this. However, the regulation won't be in effect for a year!

I heard that they were considering it. I, for one, will be so glad. I wonder if this will also fix the volume when switching channels. Some channels have their sound up so much more than others.

Yea, that's kind of what I thought, and I don't really have time right now to sit down and research what his Rx is. I did move some soil away from the trunk of that one tree, and in the next couple weeks I'll "cage" the trunks just to be on the safe side in case it is varmit damage. He was really informative and a pleasure to talk to, don't mind spending money on that kind of treatment. I really would like another small red laceleaf for the particular spot the deadwood is in (it really is perfect for the design) but he suggested not planting another one there but said I could go the plant-it-in-a-decorative-pot route. I may to that and haul it in the garage over the winter. English Gardens has 50% their pottery this weekend, they've got some really nice pots (and BIG ones), so I'll see what I can come up with.

Can you try to intervene? (Not in the aunt part--that's a done deal! LOL! Congrats! 21 nieces and nephews? WOW!) I recall that when I was in college, during the patchwork of financial aid, a few hundred bucks came from part of an alum's endowment. Maybe you can check with the financial aid office to see if there are any "specialty" accounts that could be tapped to help cover next semester? (Or get an advance on the next semester's financial aid?)

I went to Home Depot in Santa Clarita today and saw RMV on the Iceberg roses they were selling. I asked the manager about it and he said the grower assured him they were treated. I let him know that heat treatment is the only way and the grower is not going to do that for Iceberg roses. He claims that Lowe's uses the same grower, but I don't know if that's true. So, I'll probably see RMV popping up all over my city. Iceberg is the most planted rose in this area.

I'm glad they're doing it but I wonder what the compelling reason was for them to act on this. Just because people complained? In the big scheme of things it seems like a relatively minor problem to bother with but maybe the FCC doesn't have a lot of important things to do. Or maybe there's more to it than simply being annoying.

The very good news is I don't have to keep looking for the remote when commercials come on. It is extremely annoying and the reasoning behind it is brutish and obnoxious.

Actually they have not passed a new regulation,,,they have only agreed to begin actively enforcing a regulation that has been on the books since 1965.

"Sounds" good to me. I had my hearing tested a couple years ago and I've "lost" my ability to hear high frequency sounds. I was told that's typical for my age (almost 60).

I keep threating to go in to a certain Auto showroom and when the person says can I help you and I will reply
NO YOU CAN'T, I CANNOT HEAR YOU, as loud as I can. Then walk out. This guy just will not stop yelling.

Its mot just the commercials. Some shows really blast their introductory theme music.

What do I hate? After listening to a PBS station and having to push up the volume to hear it, and then changing channels; The speakers are ready to split.

The rules were adopted Tuesday at an open FCC meeting. When they go into effect in a year (Dec. 13, 2012), stations will be required to keep the volume of commercials and promos in line with the industry-approved guidelines.

It will be lightly if ever enforced. It'll rely on viewer complaints and action taken only if it shows a "pattern or trend".

Stations with more than $14 million in annual revenue must make 24-hour spot checks of all noncertified programming each year for two years. If the noncertified programming comes up clean for two years, the large stations may stop making the spot checks.

To be considered valid, the FCC rules says, complaints must contain the following information:
-The complainantÃ¢ÂÂs contact information, including name, mailing address, daytime phone number and e-mail address if available.
-The name and call sign of the broadcast station or the name and type of the MVPD against whom the complaint is directed.
-The date and time the loud commercial problem occurred.
-The channel and/or network involved.
-The name of the television program during which the commercial was viewed.
-The name of the commercialÃ¢ÂÂs advertiser/sponsor or product involved.
-A description of the loudness problem.

I don't see any value to unenforced rules and laws. Just like the no texting while driving. The cops are more concerned with DWI and seat belt violations so they won't enforce texting laws.
