DH tries to go to one of the local grocery stores on Tues--they have a senior discount then. He's been getting it for years. Not sure how old you're supposed to be, but we're only 61--BUT he has beautiful white hair, and I guess the checkers figure he qualifies. They're not too particular there--I know they used to give me the discount, when I shopped on Tues, if I said it was for my mother (it was).

Some of our Shoppers you can be 55 years old and get the senior discounts. My sister in law asked if she needed to show proof and they said they don't ask for proof and take you at your word. I only shop at Shopper's when things are on sale and usually they don't give you the discount on the sale price. Their markup on goods not on sale is really high and I can get most things cheaper else where. Milk is cheaper if you buy it in the bag but I only buy the 2 quart carton. I thought Shopper's had the lowest price for butter but lately I have been buying Gay Lea butter at Costco for $2.99. I have been buying the kind of bread I use at Shopper's because it has been cheaper than the grocery stores.

Any discount I can get I am happy to get. LOL

Anne, it was Shoppers that I got the discount, and the same store that I phoned. She said 65. I don't know of any stores here that counts a senior at 55, unlike the US.

I wonder if it's because you live on the border.

I kinda thought it would be Shoppers-the 55 age limit here as well for "senior"...I was told about that seniors discount as well-mine comes into play the end of January ;)....

LOL. When XDH and I were on vacation and we both were 50, DH went into a motel and inquired about the price and then we checked out another place and came back to the first one. I went in to register us and the clerk asked if my DH had been there a little earlier. She said he qualified for the senior discount. DS and I really got a good laugh from that and we saved money.

One of our local stores gives the discount for age 55. When I was checking out, I said, "I'm a senior and should get a discount." The little girl checker replied, "Oh, I already applied the discount for you." !!!!!

Now, I'm not too proud to ask for a discount, but I was a little put out that she ASSUMED I qualified. :)

(By the way, I never heard of milk coming in bags . . .)

Our milk has been in bags for at least 30 years. I couldn't imagine struggling with a gallon jug to pour milk on my cereal.

There are 3 smaller bags inside one bigger bag. You take a small bag and plop it into a pitcher that's made for the bag, cut a snip off the corner of the bag and pour.

One time when I was in my forties, I was asked if I wanted the senior discount. I said, "Yes." The kid asked for ID to prove my age, and I said...what my ID says doesn't make any difference...you asked and I answered :o)

Four litres (3.85 to the U.S. gal) in 3 bags, making about 1.33 litres, some under a quart, per bag.

Can get 4 litres in a jug in a number of stores, and 2 litres and smaller come in cartons (sometimes 2-litres in a plastic jug).

I live in Toronto. The current age for the SDM discount is 65. I am now 61. When I was 55, apparently the discount did apply to people age 55 and over - no ID required - something I would not have minded providing. I was in line at SDM behind another woman who was 55 and we were told we were wrong. She left her purchases, but I bought mine. I finally asked at my regular SDM and was told the age was 55 - at this point I was 57. I was at another SDM one day - it was not a "Seniors' Day" and after I paid and was arranging my bags, the couple behind me - also not regular patrons of this particular SDM, were offered free coupons at Swiss Chalet since they were "seniors" as perceived by the clerk. They were delighted. As they walked away I heard them happily mentioning how nice it was of SDM to offer the seniors' special to 50 year olds. So, I asked the clerk why I had not been offered the Swiss Chalet coupons(thankfully I hate the food there anyway) and she told me that I was obviously too young. So I decided to take that as a compliment. Recently I checked again and apparently the age is now 65 - and as another poster said, the Thursday discount does not apply to items on sale. A friend of mine whose mother is 66 gets very annoyed. She checks prices out on Wed. and then goes to SDM on Thursdays, only to find that the prices have been reduced, sometimes by only .01 - so that the discount can't be applied. Re the bagged milk - I hate it with a passion. Recently, in desperation I had to buy it - along with several other people at Loblaws due to date issues on the 2 litre cartons. I don't have the special pitcher and I don't want one. I want the milk to close. So I decided to lightly snip the edge of the plastic bag and pour it into my glass containers. Of course it spilled and splashed everywhere - all over me, the counter, the sink and the WHITE DOG. It is generally cheaper to buy milk in bags, but I won't do it.

A kid at Carls Jr. asked me if I got the Sr. discount. How old do you have to be? 65! I thought yes in 9 years you little snot. I know, he's a kid and everyone is old.

I decided then if they ask me, I'm saying yes.

WOW, I don't think you look that old! I usually have to ask for the senior discount.
