Where was this? I would have stopped and asked the owner WTHWHT?! Farmers normally keep a close eye on the weather and tend to their animals accordingly.

I would have been very insanely MAD and would have had to know the reason why those animals died!!! THEN, I would contact the animal activist groups AND the newspapers!!!

Loved reading this! Only had a son, but raising him was tough enough, esp. from age 19 - 23. The Navy was the answer to my prayers and he is now a wonderful father to 3 kids. A friend said the other day that she would rather raise a football team of boys rather than one girl! I have a granddaughter, so look forward to watching from the sidelines how that develops. Going to send this application to my son/daughter in law. Thanks for the laugh! Glad my father didn't have that - he would have used it! Judith

Well, it's done. First this morning I tried to coordinate the electric co., telephone and cable co., to drop their wires. The electric co was here by 7:30 but the cable co couldn't even tell me if they could do it today until after 8 AM. Long story..short version... by 11:30 I had the electric and telephone cable down. Cable company never did show up. But that was ok, as their cable was not really in the way after all. The guys got here shortly after 12 noon and were done by 2 PM. All down and chipped up. I had the telephone and electric back on by 3:30 PM. Whew... There were a couple of times I had to go in the house as I just couldn't watch, was afraid something would happen. All the maneuvering they had to do both with the boom truck and with the boom/bucket itself to get in position to take down some of the really high limbs. I couldn't believe it, but there was almost NO damage to the shed roof. Unbelievable, even the guys couldn't believe it. Said that I was REALLY lucky the way it fell. For now they just took off the downed limb. Not sure yet what we will do with the tree. Hoping we can keep it. However, I suggested "topping" the tree and they said that with a tree this age it would not be good. That we would end up removing it in a few years if we did that. So maybe just trim it up, take some of the "heavy" areas off? There appears to be some rot in the trunk, so not sure yet. This was the view I had when I came out into the screened porch when I found the downed limb. Forgot to take pictures until they were well on the way to having it down. The limbs/branches were almost to the top of the red door before they started dragging them off to the chipper. Couldn't believe there was so much tree in that limb. As it looks now...after clean-up.

Is it normal/healthy to cry over my dad dying still?

My kids lost their dad when he was 48 yrs old. Went to work & died. It was sudden & 15 yr old daughter didn't react for awhile tho all 3 of us, my 17 yr old son spent the night holding on to each other in master bedroom . They were OK to sleep in their rooms after that but I told them to come back if it was a bad night. I think you are getting to age of driving, proms, boys, college or work & that means you are growing up without dad & that is scaring you. My son once said, who is going to teach me to be a man(lucky for him my dad & brother were there for him) but if you think about it you are wanting to tell your dad about these things in your life, good things & bad things but you can't & that really hurts. But you could keep a journal & write about growing up, wish you could have seen me today dad, you would have been so proud, etc. I got an A on my term paper, you would have said____ Just talk to him on paper & I think you might feel closer. I moved to Ca. when I was 20 lived at aunts but so lonely for my family & especially dad, I was only girl, 4 bros. calling him we'd both cry & it was expensive so I poured my heart out in letters to him. I was so lucky as I had my folks out here until mom died last yr & dad shortly before at nearly 96 yrs old. But I never had much in way of grandparents so I had a void when younger. So get your feelings down, notice how they change as time goes on, things will seem a little better, you will go with some kids & have a good time when you didn't think you would, you have so many new & exciting things ahead of you. Grab on to life & do the living for both of you. I've had to do that for my kids as a mom I couldn't just let them flounder. I tried to be happy when I wasn't but finally as time passed the memories were sweeter than the pain. We had a great marriage & wonderful years together. You have a wonderful life ahead if you remember that your dad would not want you to be sad & miserable. Shortly before my dad died he held my hands & said, look at me, I did & he said, I have to tell you something, I want you to miss me when I'm gone, but I don't want you to mourn me. Do you understand! I said I did but as time when on I often hear those words, Miss me, don't mourn me. That means remember me, don't forget who I as but don't grieve & fret & be miserable. Such a difference, miss your dad!! Come here if you need friends or advise. Is your mom doing OK? Can you talk to her? It does get better 4 yrs is not that long. Keep busy, have fun, be a kid & you will make your dad proud.

want to cry I hate all my lighting & can't return

You sound so upset -- try to calm down. The situation probably isn't nearly as bad as it seems right now, and even if it is, there are always ways to make things better. And don't beat yourself up about making the wrong choices. Everyone -- including design professionals -- makes decorating mistakes. Before you do anything, give it some time. The lighting may grow on you when the remodel is finished and the rooms are furnished. Assuming that you still hate your lighting after living with it for a few weeks, decide what bothers you the most (it sounds like it's the fixture with the umber glass) and tackle that first. There lots of ways to ways to fix it without breaking the bank. Does the manufacturer make this fixture in other finishes? Would you be able to purchase a white or clear replacement glass from the manufacturer to replace the umber? Could you sell the fixture on Craigslist or eBay, and put the money toward something you like better? (You'd take a loss, but at least it would be a start.) Could you find an inexpensive replacement that you like better at a big box store, Craigslist, eBay, or a consignment shop? Would you be willing to repaint the room so that it works better with the fixture you have? For the smaller rooms with the flush mount lights, could you use bulbs with a higher wattage, or use more energy-efficient bulbs that give out more light for the same or lower wattage? (Make sure that you don't exceed the maximum wattage for the fixtures -- the last thing you need is a fire.) Could you supplement the overhead light by adding table or floor lamps or wall sconces? Most people would prefer to have lighting from several sources, rather than from a single fixture, because multiple light sources reduce shadows and provide more flexibility. If you decide to replace the fixtures, remember that you don't have to replace them all at once. Take your time and watch for deals. Don't worry about the cost of hiring an electrician because replacing fixtures (when the wiring is already in place) is not at all difficult. You or your husband could easily manage it, with help of a good book. Just remember to kill the power at the breaker box first. Finally, if your husband has no interest in decorating, it's unlikely that you'll be able to change him, so find yourself a shopping buddy to help you make design decisions. If you've just moved and don't have any friends in your new neighborhood, join a Newcomer's Club or other organization and meet some new people. Even if your friends aren't great designers, they'll act as a sounding board and help you decide what you like and narrow your choices. Unless you expect to sell your home in a couple of years, decorate for your own taste and don't worry too much about what future buyers will want. Most design choices will seem dated in 10 years. P.S. Hope the link below helps you put your problems in perspective and make your laugh. Here is a link that might be useful: Top 100 First World Problems

I would have been furious as well, and ended up crying. We have feral cats that I feed twice daily, I bought them an 'igloo' for them, they all pile in there and I still worry about them....so I bought a heater for it!

That's just terrible in more ways than one. Most farmers take good care of their livestock not only because it's the right thing to do, but because it's a big loss in their pocket. Sorry if that doesn't sound politically correct, but I know how farmer's depend on crops and livestock.

I was going to say the same thing as Patti......a farmer that provides hutches for his calves is not a farmer that doesn't care about his animals and as mentioned, it's a big bite out of his pocket. It's hard to know what happened but I am sure the farmer didn't intentionally let the calves die.........

lynn, I have an igloo type house for an outside cat too. What kind of heater did you get? I have mine wrapped in movers' quilts and a little entrance with a cover on it. My cat has lived in it for 4 years and seems to do ok, but a heater would be nice.

I wouldn't automatically jump to the conclusion that the farmer did something wrong. It could be that they have some type of disease that is going thru the herd and has struck the calves. They are the most vulnerable and can die fairly easily. It's ok that she called someone for them to check it out but it's not ok that you go in accusing the farmer of something without knowing all the facts. I've lived on a farm and know how quickly the younger animals can get sick and yes they do sometimes die and sometimes more than one at a time can die.

I agree - do not start accusing someone of mistreating animals unless you absolutely know.

Many cattle ranchers don't even have the hutches. But most do want all the calves to live - because where else will they get you your next steaks?

Calves do die. It's life (and death). No rancher can save every calf, and most that die probably do due to health problems.

I lived on a farm while growing up and we made sure all the animals were safe and if it meant sitting up all night and manning a stove in the barn, that's what we did....

Murrarysmom, we also take care of feral cats and along with the igloo, we built 2 other shelters...We have 2 Snuggle Safe thingies to keep them warm...I got them at Petsmart for, I think, close to $30.00...They look like a frisbie and you put them in the micro wave for 6-7 minutes and then put it under the bedding...These darn things stay warm for 12-15 hours...Just this morning, DH said, he took our their breakfast and 1 came out, ate real fast and ran back in their nice warm house...Wonderful invention.....

When I lived on a farm, we had barn cats and never provided any special housing for them, however, they had the run of the barn with plenty of fresh hay to burrow into. One very cold winter morning, I went to the barn to begin the morning chores. Some of the cows were still laying down and they had cats laying on top of them - nature's sleeping pads!

Weve seen other things on the farm, before this guy moved in there were big cows in the barn, knee deep in mud poop for weeks.looked like no one left them out,for weeks,it was awful. So no we are not jumping to conclusions..

Better freezing to death than a caged up life and a slaughterhouse, especially if they were being intended for veal. Neither is good but at least one is relatively peaceful. Poor things.

I would be crying, too, Bulldinkie. I'm sorry for the calves, and sorry your daughter had to see that.

Murraysmom, I've used the SnuggleSafe disks, too. I paid $20 online several years ago. We used them in a dog house on the porch to keep two feral cats warm on winter nights. I wrapped it in a dish towel, and they would curl up around it. It felt good knowing they were comfortable. Cats love to be warm! If yours would agree to come into your house, that would be an even better solution.

How terrible, both for the animals, and that your daughter had to see such a sight!
