I broke my ankle in two places.....

I haven't even been on the computer in a few weeks to read the posts because I fell the day after Thanksgiving and broke my ankle. I just had surgery last Monday and had 8 pins put in my ankle, now I am going next week to have a cast put on for at least 8 weeks. OMG, I never realized how much pain a broken bone could be. My poor DH, he has to help me with everything and I can't go to work of course. At least I get my full pay for no matter how long I am out. It looks like it may be 3 months. I am now on line trying to do some Christmas shopping. There is nothing at all good about this. Please everyone be careful don't let this happen to you.

Oh, that's terrible, especially this time of year. Not that there is a good time to be injured like that. I'm glad you don't have to worry about your income, at least. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

I fell on ice and broke my ankle almost 4 years ago. I was vey fotunate that I only had a boot and no surgery and even that was vey unpleasant. Now I'm afraid to go outside when it is slippery.

Kentucky Blue Grass (KBG) is probably the dominant grass used in lawns in the Salt Lake Valley, so that is probably the grass you have now. It can deal with drought by going dormant, but as hot and dry as it has been lately, if it didn't get any water for three weeks, it may have died (part of my lawn died when a sprinkler head stopped rotating right after I did my monthly inspection). You could try to water it and see if it comes back, but you might be better off reseeding. If you want a lawn that will stay green without any additional water, you have pretty limited choices. Buffalo grass or a mixture of buffalo grass and blue grama will stay green without additional water (you may need to water once or twice in a year like this year). They're a little different color than what you're used to seeing. Buffalo grass is sort of gray green and grama is sort of blue green. The grama is a bunch grass and the buffalo grass spreads (and fills in) by stolons (above ground runners like a strawberry plant has). If you want a really soft lawn, you'll want to get a buffalo grass like legacy, that you can plant from plugs (no seeds that way--buffalo grass has prickly seeds). Buffalo grass isn't cheap, though, especially not from sod. Blue grama is pretty easy to get started, but it's tough to spread the seeds (they're like dust and often have a lot of chaff with them). In Orem, a buffalo grass lawn will probably not start to turn green until sometime in May and will probably start to turn brown in September. You might get a week or two more of green on either end than I would, so maybe early May to late September/early October. But it will definitely turn brown earlier in the fall than your current lawn and will definitely stay brown later in the spring. The grama will be green a little earlier in the spring and a little later in the fall than the buffalo grass. Two cool season grasses that will stay green with no water (may need a little in a year like this) are western wheatgrass and sheep fescue. I think Arizona fescue and Idaho Fescue will also stay green. western wheatgrass can be difficult to get started initially, but it spreads aggressively once it gets started. The fescues are all bunch grasses. Streambank wheatgrass and crested wheatgrass will stay alive with no additional water, but they'll go dormant once the rains stop and will green up again in the fall. Streambank wheatgrass spreads via rhizomes like western wheatgrass. Older varieties of Crested wheatgrass are bunch grasses but newer varieties like Roadcrest and Ephraim are mildly rhizomatous. Crested wheatgrass was introduced from Russia, and the others are all native. For buffalo grass and grama, you're probably too late to seed. Those should be seeded in late spring or early summer. I seeded a little grama a couple of weeks ago, but I was already cutting it close. The other grasses can be planted in the fall. If you haven't planted by September 15, I think I'd wait until early winter and dormant seed (seed when it's too cold for them to sprout and they'll germinate in the spring as soon as conditions are right). You'll have best results with any of these if you kill your existing lawn first. For the buffalo grass and grama, it's probably necessary. I'm assuming the water in the spot that died from too much water is from your watering, right? The reason I ask is that none of these grasses deal very well with too much water. They can generally deal with spring flooding, but if you water them like a KBG lawn, they'll die. The wheatgrasses and sheep fescue are less expensive than buffalo grass, but they're still a little pricy (although maybe not compared with the elite KBG seeds many people here buy). I can provide links to some places that sell the various seeds if you're interested.

If you really want to use an aversive I would try it with the "no" Ginny -- then after a few times try the "no" without the bottle. Try to wean off the bottle so that you only need the word. Your aim is to teach her that "no" means "stop whatever you're doing." You won't always have the bottle with you, after all. So the "no" comes first, and the squirt only comes if she doesn't move away. Cats have extremely sensitive senses of smell, perhaps even stronger than dogs. You can certainly try using different things on your pants legs. You might find that something as simple as lemon or vanilla discorages the behavior. But like having the bottle with you at all times, this is an inconvenience. Have you considered using clicker training to put the behavior on cue? That way you could cue it when you wnated it and cue him not to do it when you don't want it. You would both win that way. Plus, you'd be teaching with reward, not punishment. Plus, you'd be learning skills that would help you with traiing your other two cats as well, and you and your kitties would all have a lot of fun training times together.

marie-ndcal I am seeing a orthopedic Dr tomorrow but not the one who did my knee. I am going to one about 1 hr. from us & has been recommended by my reg. Dr. I am sure it has started to heal but the pain has gotten worse over the past 3 weeks. I will do whatever has to be done but I hope it is not surgery.

Owie! I can't imagine trying to get around on crutches. I do hope your bones heal quickly. You'll want to get into physio therapy as soon as that cast comes off. The sooner the better!

Oh, Bummer. Lyndy. I'm sorry to hear your bad news. Guess there really isn't a good time for these things, but Christmas seems to be specially sad. Take care of your self. It sounds like your Hubby is a honey to care for you like that. Hope you heal real fast. Dottie

So sorry! I hope the doc gave you pain meds.

I've had two hip replacements; you've gotta take the meds so you can move enough to rehab.

Hope your DH is a wonderful as mine has been. I don't think the RNs at the hospital believed me when I said I wouldn't be going to a nursing home post-op because my DH would take care of me at home.

Sending special thoughts and prayers that you will heal quickly and completely. What a horrible time of year to be laid up. Get lots of rest and take care of yourself. I broke my ankle (my only broken bone) back in 1990--I still remember how painful it was. Hugs!

Lyndy, you have my sympathy! My friend Linda had this happen two years ago, and she couldn't drive for six months. I can't imagine how I would manage by myself. Hope you heal faster than anticipated!

So sorry to hear about your injury. My Mom use to slip and fall on the ice every year. I blame it on the darn impractical shoes that were popular. She broke both her ankles several times and now at 90 finds it hard to walk because of it. So be careful.

Aww...man! I hate to hear that. Tell you what you do now...call Flamey and Gabby and have them take you on a trip to Iowa for a KT get-together! LOL Then, when you get to the park - pick good lookin' guys to carry you over so that you can ride the merry-go-round. (Wear good lookin' panties - No GRANNIES!! LOL)

I'm tellin' you all of this because I did the same thing in 2003 and it is NOT fun! Had all my hardware taken out of my ankle back in April and it has helped, alot.

Thanks all of you for all your kind thoughts. How I did it, was I was going out front on the lawn to pick up the paper, so that I could look at the ads to take my mom Christmas shopping and I hurry all the time, so I was running and the grass was wet and I slid and my right foot went under me and I came down on it and sat on it. I actully heard it crack, so I just sat there crying because I just knew that it was bad, and everything went in front of me, Christmas shopping (I love the shop) my very busy job (which I am really starting to love) and then just being laid up. Oh well, I am making the best of it. I have company everyday, someone brings me lunch. My mom and dad - 80 and 82 come over every day when my DH is working, my son and his girlfriend stop by. But it is hard to sit around when I have so much to do. Thanks again for all your thoughts.

Ooh, I feel your pain just thinking about it. When I was in high school, a classmate fell in the hall and broke his arm. I remember the POP I heard. I'll never forget that sound. Sorry you have to miss work and Christmas shopping, but glad you have family around.

I feel your pain. I had 3 broken bones in my ankle in April. Fortunately no surgery was needed, but I feel for you. It is a pain to sit and do nothing, but that's all you can really do. Take lots of pain meds...that's my advice! When you get to therapy, they may have you pick up marbles with your toes and put them into a dixie cup! :)

Tip: use a bag of frozen English peas to help with the swelling.

Been there, done that!

My wrist break was in the summer, and HOT.
I carried one of those portable battery hand fans to blow down my cast. Sure did help.
