Ouchy! I say get an exray done, grab some pain killers and up the leg up. DH can wait on you.

When I broke some toes a ways back I did go in for xrays to comfirm the breaks...all they did was align the broken toe and taped it to the next unbroken toe. Motrin and ice helped as did staying off of it but who has time for that LOL!!!

I had an old pair of sneaker that I cut the toe cap off and was able to slide my foot into it to go to work.

It felt better after about 2 weeks but man oh man did it hurt at first!!

Over twenty years ago I broke the 3rd toe on my left foot when I caught the webbing between the 2nd and 3rd toes( I have that on both feet, just those two toes only) on the corner of a floor model television. I had an x ray of it and yes it was broken They didn't set it, or tape it up . I was told to stay off it but with 3 children all under 10 years old at the time, I could not stay off it. For years after it healed if I stepped on something that rolled , it would hurt a little. Now it doesn't bother me .

But if your foot is swelling, you may have more than a toe broken. Go get an x ray done and see if it is damaged more than you think.

Linda, if there is no bone protruding and if it's not bent real bad, just tape to the next toe. Not much you can do. Foot up, ice and pain med will help.

I broke my little toe, several times. Once though, I caught it on a chair leg and actually heard the bone go "crunch". Next day my foot was purple all down the side. I got an exray, for that one, and they gave me some anti- inflammatory pills which really helped with the pain. The swelling felt like my foot was going to pop.

Anyway, I would get an exray just to be sure. If you wait too long and you actually did break your foot, they won't be able to fix it as easily. Hurry up and go. And get some pills! :)

Ouch! I've done it too, and I truly know what it means to "see stars"! Tape, ice and motrin are all good. You might want to get an xray, especially since you work in a hospital setting. One time it wasn't my toe, but in fact, my foot! I wore a soft cast for about 5 weeks!

The pain is into my foot, so maybe I'll go in and see if I can get an x-ray. Just in case I fractured something futher back. Besides if I want pain pills, I need to go in, right? LOL

I did almost the same thing you did the other night but mine was okay in the morning. Like an idiot (guess I'm talking about both of us), I turned out the lights downstairs -- hey, after 34 years in the same house, I thought I could find my way around in the dark -- and whammo, smashed my toe into the rocking chair rocker. Wowee. I didn't need lights because I could see stars.

Yes, go have it checked.

Another who says tape it, ice it and take 4 ibuprofin every 6 hours.
The first time I broke my toe I did go to the ER for an x-ray....but the Dr just sake to keep it up, keep off it ( with 2 toddlers!) and take aspirin.
I have done that several times since....and I followed those directions...I even broke the 2nd toe...the "pointer toe" if toes could point. Iw as wearing a thong sandal with a hard sole and caught it on a cord, fell on the tile floor and hurt my elbow so bad I didn't notice the toe was really nasty until the next day. I taped it and wore soft soled flip flops for a couple of weeks, but the bruise extended well into my foot...and the toe has a little bend to it today! LOL! Doesnt' hurt....
oday's thursday....if you broke it there is not much to be done by now as the healing has well begun.
Just keep with the motrin and tape it....it will feel better when you do.

I also broke a toe, dropped a package of frozen hamburger on it. Hey, it's food related! Like everyone else, they taped it to the next toe and said to take Tylenol. Ashley once broke her finger and they did the same thing because it wasn't "displaced".

If your whole foot hurts, though, I'd have it checked out, you might have hurt something more than your toe.

Yep, I've broken three (not all at the same time.) All they can do is tape one to the other and tell you ice, elevation and pain meds. That is if it's only the toe and not further in. I was told if a red dtreak started up my foot to go back to the MD pronto. That never happened, though.

I swear breaking my toe hurt a lot worse than when I broke my leg.

I stepped off a step funny once on the way home from a dinner pary, and thought I just twisted my ankle a little. Went home, went to bed and woke up with a swollen foot. I thought it was just sprained bad. Went to the emergency room just to borrow some crutches. They insisted on x-ray, and I found out I had broken one of the bones in my foot by jerking the tendon. I resisted a hard cast since I couldn't get to work without driving. Finally had my mom come and stay with me and got a cast. Couldn't take it for more than ten days, it hurt so bad that I took pruning shears to it one night to cut it away. Don't know how it healed, but I don't notice anything out of order with my foot.

Why Linda, how's that toe doing?

I've never broken anything (object or body part), but I have kicked coffee tables, walls, appliances... but usually it's the unused Gazelle Freestyle exercise machine that I leave in the middle of the room to "force" myself to use it (yeah, that technique is working great!).

Oh Lord, does that ever hurt. I think I once broke the two smallest toes when we were kids (I was about 13?) and something big and heavy fell on my foot. LOL I didn't go to the doctor but just rather wore shoes that would accommodate and that was it. Then I think I either severely stubbed or broke my big toe several years later, which still gets a pain in it when it's going to rain. *Sigh* I'm turning into a weather barometer already...

Wow, do I know that a broken toe hurts. I was a senior in highschool, running laps in gym to warm up, and was elbowed by a boy running past me. I nearly fell flat on my face but caught myself and jarred my shoulders. My toe didn't hurt then, but my shoulders did. Then I went to play badminton and my big toe just suddenly started hurting like an Acme anvil from the cartoons had fallen on it. Well, it was first period, I was stupid, and the gym teacher already hated me for being an asthmatic and having to sit out sometimes. So I played badminton. My toe went numb. I went to all my classes like nothing was wrong... but after school when I took my shoe off, my toe was swollen nearly double and was nice pretty bruised colors. Mom took me to the ER, it was broken in several spots. I got a nice shoe to wear, heh. It still gives me problems, and likely always will.
