I could write a book on dns to explain why they dont all work for you on neighboring computers but I cant spell too well, so anyhow... Anyways.. you might want to look in your Administrative tools(i think) for the 'Computer Management' tool. It's always a good idea to look quickly in the Event Logs... just for fun of seeing the errors ;) .. sometimes you'll see the problem and maybe even be able to follow the link to a fix. While in Computer Management / Under Services, look for DNS and make sure its set automatic and started. If not running and if it wont start, look at the dependencies tab,,, you will want the ip/sec service set to auto also. That should cover that. Then open a cmd window and type ipconfig /help and you can scroll up and see several things one might do. run the flush dns cache option in case cache is corrupted somehow, which some people do have problems with. ipconfig /flushdns ~all those google ip numbers and the google names do work for me, no problem. I dont use typical dns .. theres a program out there called TreeWalk that you might look into. I have found it makes things real snappy quick here for name resolution. It does your own dns cache so it seldom actually asks your isp or even your router for dns. And if a name doesnt resolve it quickly checks another dns server.

you likely set up google desktop as the default which is why now oyur Outlook is using it to search, you should be able to change that setting in your outlook so it uses a different search option. Firefox ... another quick way also (for many things); 1.Enter about:config into the address bar and hit Enter. 2.Press the "I"ll be carefull." button. 3.Enter browser.urlbar.maxRichResults in the Filter field. Right click and edit. 4.Set it to any number of suggestions.

Linda- I'm running into the same thing on my computer. I thought I had pretty good protection on my computer and I somehow got this thing. I noodled around and found lots of recent talk about hiss exact problem. Gurus seemed to keep recommending the anti-malware I have linked below. I downloaded the free version, seemed to clear up most of the problem. I still have the problem...but only on the very first item in the list of whatever I've Googled. If I choose any other hit other than the first, I can get right to it. If I really want to choose the first hit, I have to select it, hit go back, select it again, and go back, until I get it. Sometimes I can get to the site after the second or third try. I've got my computer guy working on it again now. [He thinks it happened as the result of clicking on an ad that came up on a website where malware was scripted onto what appeared to be a legitimate ad. Huh? Oh well...I don't remember clicking...but the kids might have. :( !!] If I find out anything else, I'll let you know! He's really good and was stumped by this! I can see it in Firefox but not in IE...I think it depends on your browser and/or its settings.

You can also defrost by wiping your cursor around the page, fun.

Same as Suzique and Minnie, except for a few tiny grey spots.

Tried it in IE and didn't work at all.

Would somebody take a screen shot so we can see what we missed?

I tried this last night and thought, well that doesn't work! I see now - you have to wait a few seconds - for those of you that couldn't get it to work, go to google, type let it snow in the search bar and click enter - then watch on the top left of your screen, you should see a slight foggy sensation start to cover the words there. Just let it continue and your whole screen will eventually fill up with "snow". Once it's almost full the defrost button will appear at the top on the right side, just click that to remove the snow, or click your cursor and 'wipe' the snow away.
Now that I see how it works, it's pretty cute. I'll have to sneak up on a couple of co-workers tomorrow and type it in to their computer while they are away from there desks...

Pammyfay, yes the dots were moving down and I saw the defrost button so I thought it was done.

With further instructions I tried again and saw the page turning blue, then whitish.

Being Google I guess I was expecting something a little more exciting.
