An invitation from Readers Paradise :)

Hello all at the KT. I usually hang out in the gardenweb library, "RP" and see many of your names there.

I will be leading a book discussion on the following starting February 1st:

Call the Midwife A True Story of the East End in the 1950s by Jennifer Worth (Book - 2002) - *edit Note that this book seems to be also known as just Call the Midwife and also as Call the Midwife: A Memoir of Birth, Joy, and Hard Times

I recently watched the PBS series and thought the book would be fun to discuss. It should be at your local library too. Just wanted to send you all on an invite to join in.

I so enjoy that show. I was surprised to see the post WWII privations that even the better off characters lived with in England at that time. In contrast, those years in the USA were of growing earning power and increasingly higher standards of living for everyone.

I do hope someone who lived in England at the time could join your book discussion to explain differences in life back then between our two countries.

I think Chummy is my favorite character in the show.

thanks for the invite.

I checked to see if this book is available for kindle or iPad thru Ohio ebooks, but this particular edition "A True Story of the East End in the 1950s" is NOT.

Local library also has several other editions & formats, but again not this one. I also did an online search for a variety of libraries in Ohio.... none has this edition.

I hope you'll get others who can find it, to participate in your discussion. I will check out RP to see if there are other discussions I might join.

A treasured moment in my life was the chance to sit down and talk with Adelma Simmons shortly before her death. The conversation was wide ranging and, of course, included the phenomenon of gardening as a hobby in the 80's. As Mrs. Simmons is undoubtedly the author who brought herbs out of the closet and into the mainstream, her comments suprised me. Though she encouraged anyone with a pen to give it a shot, her concern was that the garden book world would be overrun with "fluff" and little substance. This prophecy seems to have come full circle. There are just so many "how to design a border" books that one can read and gain from. Publishers took full advantage of the surge in interest and flooded the market for a quick buck. I really think that this is why there is a decline. Those of us who are serious gardeners (serious enough to "talk" about it on a daily basis with webfriends) will always buy anything that's there of interest. But the backyard hobbiest only wants one or two coffee table books, not anything of substance. So, while book sales may be declining, it could be that there's not a lot out there to buy that hasn't been rehashed many times before. You're right, Ginny, everyone wants to see their name in print and publishers take full advantage to make a quick buck despite the quality. I admit that I have stopped buying gardening books en masse. I don't have the room, nor the time, to read 10 or 15 new books at a clip. Substance seems to be what's missing. "How To's" have given way to "look how lovely this is." The "lovely" books rarely mention the financial part of designing and implementing a full-blown garden worthy of publication. So, IMHO, while I feel for the writers whose rights are contracted away, and I feel for those of us with this plant passion who can't get enough, I give Amy all the credit in the world for doing an ad hoc "market survey" and not putting out pages for the sake of putting out pages. And, I truly still believe, that the masses sway the market. The decline in sales is a perfect example of this. People still have money, people still have interest, and now the publishers need to catch up. Martie

Another bookmark exchange comes to a close and I daresay a good time was had by all. This year was much easier as I already had the database set up. Do you think it is a good idea to make it a yearly thing? I am willing to play host unless someone else has a burning desire to do so. I have been eying some sales and thinking about next year. Of course we don't have to decide any of this now, just something to think about.

I'm not sure whether to feel complimented, amused, or something else but no. I'm nowhere near Mensa material anyway, but those I have known over the years who were involved with the group could consistently be described as being pretty nerdy and pretty geeky. I'm just an ordinary average guy. If you met me on the street, there would be no way for you to see the outfit I wear under my clothes with the big red S on the chest. Just kidding.

KSWL, I bought the book yesterday and finished it today. While I don't think I would read another of the author's books, I have to say the story of "Still Alice" was compelling, and while some of the writing was decidedly amateurish it is not awful. I think, though, that the main draw is that the subject of the book and the protagonist is something a lot of readers will identify with. As for the movie, I won't be seeing that for a few weeks, but the NY'er and NYTimes reviews also said the film sort of flinched rather than being as authentic as it could be. Funny aside, I learned the word "anomia' reading the (2009) book today. It means when you cannot find a word. I recently taught my kids the word "aphasia" and now they tease me that I have aphasia all the time. Anyway, i learned the related word "anomia", and mentioned it to DH over lunch. Then at 5:17pm my DD1 gets her "word of the day" email from Dictionary.com. And the word is ... anomia! Bizarre.

Love the Reader's Paradise Forum, and have learned of so many good books there. Some years ago, I had listened to a book being read while I was driving; then I lost the station. So I posted on the RP forum what little bit I had heard, and very soon there was my answer to my question.

Bee - I checked my library and wikpedia and it looks as if there are three books that form a trilogy. The first one was originally just called Call the Midwife but then it appears to have been modified to Call the Midwife: A True Story of the East End in the 1950s". I looked on Amazon and it also appears to be also known as Call the Midwife: A Memoir of Birth, Joy, and Hard Times. Three titles for the same book...I have no idea why they made is so confusing lol. Anyway, hopefully this will help you with your searching.

We do have a few Brits on the forum who always give us their opinions and info. Some active Aussies as well :).
I will edit my first post, if possible to indicate the other titles. The edit button doesn't work on RP for some strange reason.

Oh, thank you Janalyn! Yes, indeed this title IS available for Kindle/iPad from Ohio eBooks: "Call the Midwife: A Memoir of Birth, Joy, and Hard Times". I will try to find time to download & read it, to perhaps join in the discussion on Feb 1. The subject seems appealing to me. I was aware of the PBS show, but didn't get involved @ the outset of it. Wasn't aware it was from a book, or I might have already gone that route.
