If they were glass it would be one thing but I wouldn't reuse anyone's plastic anything. Anyway the best thing a low income mother can do for her baby is breastfeed.

Maybe a local farm or pet rescue could use them for the orphan animals. They would probably want the nipple, too.

I'm kind of like your husband - I throw out things
very easily. But, I do like the idea of maybe
seeing if an animal organization could use them.

Otherwise - not something I would buy either.

Craigslist. You'd be surprised what people will take when it's free and they may have an idea for them that you and I would never even think of.

You should put them on. When someone is in need, it could mean plenty to their pocketbook as well as their child.
I'm not debating breastfeeding but I'm guessing there are working moms who have to use a bottle at times. As Kat said it won't hurt to post it. I don't see how it's gross unless they look gross.

How is it any different than used drinking glasses? I don't think it's gross.

Well for the record, I think breastfeeding is wonderful. But it's also hard and painful and not possible for every women. Both my children were breastfed. One I had to pump a lot. The second was weaned around 7-8 months. Hence the need for bottles both times.

Thanks for the votes. I probably will list them. I hate to waste anything, so maybe someone will want them. If I get no takers maybe I'll try the animal shelter/petting zoo. There's an idea I never thought of!

What would it hurt to post them on Freecycle or Craigslist Free Stuff? Even if they don't use them as baby bottles someone may have a use for them as someone has already said - an animal shelter or maybe some other use even an art project. Who knows? People aren't afraid of used plastic either. Goodwill always sells their Tupperware and other plastic items. Besides household use gardeners make good use of plastic containers too.

I try to keep as many things out of landfills as possible.

BTW, I see empty, washed baby food jars posted all the time, and they always seem to be snapped right up.

Old carpeting ripped out of homes get taken too. Why? They make for great weed barriers between rows and besides keeping down weeds they keep moisture in the soil. They keep shoes from getting muddy when walking between the rows after a big rainfall. Who would have thunk there would be a demand for old W2W carpeting?

If something does not get any action on Freecyle or Free CL put it curbside with a *FREE* sign. Then if it does not get rescued, let the garbage men take it.

My daughter threw out her minifridge. I pulled it back from the curb, wrote a short ad in Craigslist, put it back at the curb after the garbagemen had passed, it was taken within an hour. Plus I got two emails from people wanting to take it. It was a great decluttering moment for me. Nothing is too gross. We took down our above ground pool, put the pieces outside on a Friday. By Sunday a guy with a truck came and took all the metal pieces. I didn't even list that.

List it. Someone will want it.

Just because they're baby bottles, doesn't mean someone might not could use them for something besides their intended use. We used them at work to put the candle dye in.*S*

Yes, list them. Baby bottles are expensive and someone is going to snap them up -- I bet you'll be surprised how fast they go. They'll stay out of the landfill and help a mom who's short on cash! A wash in bleach water will sanitize them for pennies.

I'm all for recycling/reusing anything possible! We get rid of stuff on Freecycle all the time and I love the fact that stuff that we no longer need or want will go to someone who can use it, rather than piling up those landfills.

Sometimes I'm surprised by the stuff I see offered on Freecycle (an open can of coffee that someone bought but didn't like, frozen food from someone cleaning out their freezer....) but most everything seems to get taken!

That said, if I saw a bag of 15 bottles offered, and they were the kind I use, I'd probably ask for them! I've bought them at a second-hand store before. We lose them all the time, so it's nice to have lots on hand. We also try to save money wherever we can, and a lot of people think that way.

If you don't offer them - people don't have the option.

If you do - they have the choice.

You're not twisting anyone's arm to force them to take them.

I like my freedom, choice and options ... but suppose you had them and I would have liked to make use of them ... if you don't list them, I have no opportunity of making use of them: I don't even know of their existence at your house.

Living near a landfill, whose licensed capacity was recently almost doubled ...

... I applaud your desire to avoid using landfill unnecessarily.

Good grief, there are desperate moms out there that will take them for sure to use. Nothing wrong with them. You musn't be desperate enough and no money to buy those things like those that are so needed to feed your baby.

You could take them to a Woman's Shelter too. Sometimes people leave very quickly and don't have time to pack what they need.

Certainly list them. Hey, babies are gross when it comes down to it, but a piece of glass or plastic? Hardly. Unless you used them for catheters or something. I remember people used to boil the bottles to sterilize them. If I got used ones that's what I'd do. Even the plastic ones were boiled.

This reminded me of the Playtex bottles with the plastic bag liner. My cousins used them on their son. Essentially the "bottle" was a cylinder with a couple slots so you could see how much was in the bag. The idea was there'd be less air ingested. I don't know if these are still around or not.

I agree. List them. They can be sanitized and used. Someone will be thankful to get them.

BTW...cynic...the Playtex bottles are still around. I have a whole bunch of them on my kitchen counter :)

Once something is washed and sterilized it's fine.

i just can't let wild child's comment go by...as much as my dd encourages her clients (she has low income moms) to breast feed, it's NOT always possible as many have to return to work/school asap, and don't have the money for a breast pump. or as my dil found out the privacy to use one at work...(she begged the use of a empty room on her lunch hour and was turned down)

and it's NOT only low income mothers who should be encouraged to breast feed their babies...everyone should have the chance...
