Package Lost....HELP!!

I ordered my DH Christmas on 11/20 and received notification from the company that the package shipped and should arrive UPS on 12/02...I never got it. I contacted the company and they told me to contact UPS, so I called UPS and they have a tracking number for the package but have no idea where it is. On the tracking sheet that I printed from the company I ordered the package from it states on the UPS confirmation that the package was left at our front door. We live in the country and usually this is no big deal and we have never had an issue with this until now.

UPS keeps telling me they will look into it and this morning when I called and asked to speak with the driver he stated he had to go to the town where I live today and he would see if "it rang a bell" as to where he may have left it! WHAT!!

I ordered almost $350.00 worth of stuff for him and if it's "rings a bell" we might have Christmas at our house this year!

Any advice on what I should do?

Yes. Call the company that shipped it and have them file a claim with UPS. The driver probably left it at the wrong house and they'll make good on it with the company. This has happened to us more than once, same thing- rural setting.

Good luck. Since you never took delivery of it, you won't be held responsible for any of it. Hopefully the company that shipped it put the right amount of insurance on it, it would have only cost another dollar or two, UPS insurance is incredibly reasonable.

Good luck with getting your package. One time we ordered a sewing machine to be delivered at Amber's. The on line tracking showed it had been delivered. We looked all around her decks, didn't find it. She lives in the country. Finally found it. The driver had put it in the garage that is not attached to the house! So maybe the driver left it in an "odd" place. Hope you get it taken care of.

Melissa, you HAVE been busy, but you will appreciate it so much when you are done. I know that you are a homeschooler, and I admire you for that. Some good guesses so far. Yep now that I have got the machine I can do just that stitchntime! I don't retain it all though like some younger folks do since I am older but I will get it in time. Thank you Colleen! I had bought me some thread on Ebay but it hasn't got here yet so I found a sewing place where I can get it locally. My Aunt uses the same thread and it's called Art thread. There's about 1,100 yds to each spool. They have some gorgious colors to! I have been playing with the machine for the past couple of days and I have finally figured some of it out. There's not many folks with this machine. I haven't found but one person with one. I was hoping I bought one several folks has. I don't know if it's an older machine or a newer one. Mine was new in the box but don't know when this one was orignally made. Anyway I am rambling on again! Thank you again!!!!

My mother's mother came to Iowa from Bohemia in about 1885. She passed her never-actually-written-down recipe down to her two daughters by showing, one of them of course, my mother. I grew up on these special treats, something similar to a danish in shape but smaller, that no neighbor kids in California knew unless my mom had been baking a hundred or so all day. It started very early in the morning because potatoes had to be boiled and mashed finely. The true dough is incredibly light and fluffy because of the potato content. It wasn't a flake dough, just a very light and fluffy yeasty bread, rolled into balls less than golf-ball sized. They were covered with damp dish towels in a warm place to raise. After they rose once, they were pushed down to rise a SECOND time! The risen balls were flatted out a bit into disks and a slight crater was made in the middle. The classic "essential" and most special filling was prune. She used regular dried prunes boiled down to a jam-like mash with water, ground cloves and allspice. Of course all the pits had to be fished out. That's a classic taste I miss Âwith those particular spices. She also made apricot ones using dried apricots cooked down similarly, but I don't recall any special spice in those. The third flavor was poppy seed and, oh, I loved those! You can still buy Solo brand poppy seed filling in a tin can in most U.S. markets. If it's nowhere else, check the Jewish foods section. I doubt if she altered it much. It comes already sweetened. After the filling was scooped into each crater, a glob of a special creamy topping was put on, leaving the filling showing around the edges. The best way she found to duplicate her mother's topping was by using "hoop" cheese. You rarely see it. It's packaged like the large-sized Philadelphia Cream Cheese used to be, or like a pound of butte, less fatty and not sweet at all like ricotta. The cheese needs to be pretty dry, because you add egg, or maybe just the yolk, I don't remember, sugar, vanilla extract and probably a pinch of salt. This mixture must be made smooth, because the cheese comes a bit lumpy. After all is baked, Mom would glaze on melted butter with one of her mother's hand-tied goose feather brushes. I haven't had these delights since my mom gave up baking in the 1980's and subsequently died. Nobody in my family has ever found anything even close to these gems I used to come home from school to Âspread out everywhere to cool on torn-open grocery bags. They freeze well. You just reheat them and dust them with powdered sugar. Manna from heaven, believe me! If she had dough left over, well that made the world's finest croissants. The secret's in the lightness of the dough. Mom and her sister wrote to each other their whole lives telling of their latest batch and deciding if they stood up to their mother's. I'm fond of how-to information, which appeals to my need-to-know personality as an information geek; and luckily that type of information is so readily available these days. I started in my mother's kitchen as a child, reading a few cookbooks and booklets that were more than just recipes; good basic training as a kid in 4-H, and bless a really great Home Economics teacher in high school where I caught the cooking/baking bug in earnest. The public library has been a good friend for ever and always - I can check out the shelves at the library and come up with videos, DVDs and great instructional books on nearly any subject concerning cooking and baking. And all those years of watching the pros on TV. I've purchased DVDs from King Arthur Flour on several subjects. I have Shirley O. Corriher's "Kitchen Secrets Revealed!" (I also recommend her books, CookWise and BakeWise). I've watched "Good Eats" videos and DVDs by Alton Brown since they were first available on TV and also checked them out from the library. I also have a bunch of books by Harold McGee, starting with "On Food and Cooking - The Science and Lore of the Kitchen". The Cooking Channel web site has "tons" of videos (http://www.cookingchanneltv.com/). So if you want to know something, it's out there.... I'm also a life-long believer in continuing education. There are so many classes available. I've taken classes in Greek Foods, Irish Foods, sausage making, home-canning, dehydrating, nutrition, how to write a recipe, even using a microwave oven back in the 1970's, bread classes of all kinds.... And then the old saying - knowledge isn't knowledge until you share it with others - which has led to a near lifetime of teaching food and nutrition classes in our community. Everything from 4-H, Girl Scouts, to elderly men at the senior center who were now in charge of cooking for the first time in their lives.... I couldn't begin to guess how many people have taken "Bread-in-a-Bag" classes - both youngsters and oldsters. General basic nutrition and cooking classes at the Food Bank. Cooking with commodities classes, using commodity foods distributed to low-income individuals and families. These classes have been well received and are great fun. I love food science and consider it a "good read", so you'll find a lot of technical manuals and college-level text books in my personal library. I want to know why something works or doesn't. As a Foods Judge at County Fairs I need to know judging standards, but also why one muffin, pie, cake, cookie, biscuit, loaf of quick or yeast bread, etc., isn't as good as another. What went wrong or right and to be able to share that information with entries in the competition. Those are technical skills not found in a recipe, but take years of self-study. Anyway, it's not just one thing and you'll have to find your own comfort and interest level. I've also had some very good mentors through the years. I'm always endearing myself to someone who knows - so I can learn from them. -Grainlady

I hope it all works out for you. It's very frustrating that expensive packages like that can be left without a sigature. I know that sometimes it's not convenient to have to sign but at least it makes sure that the package gets delivered to the right person.

I have had a package left on my doorstep that came up "missing" One of the items delivered was there, the other was not. I ordered from Penny's, and they sent another out at no charge, no questions asked.
I also sent my brother a ham dinner from Harringtons, and it was confirmed delivered by FedX. Again they sent another out at no charge.
My brother did find the original ham over a month later in an old antique milkbox he has had on his porch for 20 years!
Why the heck someone would have put it there out of sight is still a mystery.
Wait and see if any bells ring with your delivery guy.
Hopefully you can get a charge back on you credit card and have a replacement sent. I think the company owes you a replacement at no charge though.

Talk to the UPS Center Manager not the driver....do you still have the e-mail with the tracking number on it?

I sent a pkg to my GD in N.Calif earlier this year,and included tracking,and ins on it.GD and i both kept checking the tracking and it said it was delivered on a certain day.GD never got it!! I called the PO here and she called her PO.At first her mail lady said she didn't remember it,then she had a light bulb moment and said she did,but that she had delivered it to the wrong addy.Said she didn't know why as she knows GD because i send her soooooo many pkgs.

She went to the apt where she knew she had delivered it and they denied getting it ,yet said they weren't giving it back.The PO threatened them with stealing mail,and other things,yet they wouldn't return it.They even stopped delivering their mail to them for a short while all to no avail.

PO ended up paying GD for the pkgs monetary worth.While i appreciated that it wasn't the same as what i had sent for her and the kids.Lesson learned though,now i never send anything without signature confirmation!! It's worth it,IMHO.

Hopefully, you paid with a credit card. If UPS doesn't make good on this, you can advise the credit card company, in writing, that you are disputing the charge and avoid payment for the stuff.

I once had an order that UPS 'delivered' but I never got. Company replaced the order. Months later when then husband decided to move a car into the garage to work on that had been sitting around back, up on blocks, no tires on it. Yep, there was my pkg on the back seat floor. I sent the money to the company for the duplicate order. Good luck on your pkg.

Years ago I had a Christmas order from Miles Kimball that I didn't get and they sent a duplicate order. Next spring when the snow melted I was looking out my kitchen window at my mother's house (next door) and there was the package at her back door coming out from under the melting snow.

UPS really makes me mad, they are so expensive and they do so little. I send a lot of packages via UPS and if there is anything wrong with the address and they return it to me they charge a fortune. Then just this week they delivered two packages coming to my home to my neighbor. One was soaked when I got it!

Good luck with your package. I sent tickets overnight with them last year, it took a week and they could not track it. Now our tickets go out Fed Ex.

Once a neighbor sent us a package from Chicago. We were watching her home while she was gone. She was gone for more than a month. She had sent the package directly from Crate & Barrel, about the 2nd week she was in Chicago.
We never received the package.
Our normal UPS driver was on vacation during the time and a substitute driver must have delivered it to the wrong address.
It took more than 6 weeks to get the situation resolved. If you are vehement with UPS you will not have a replacement in time for Christmas.
Be assertive and be do not take "no" for an answer.
