Hibernate

For less than 1 hr., hibernate. For more than that, I turn it off. It's not good for the computer to turn off and on often. However, it's good to turn it off for the night, it saves energy.

Also, it's a good habit to turn off the monitor when you step away for more than 30 mins. You'd be surprised how much energy you'd be saving.

At night, I turn it off. During the day the energy saver kicks in for the monitor.

I sleep at night.

Never tried hibernating, sounds like that would mean missing meals, LOL.

I bet Jerry's wishes I would turn off often, but no off switch on me. :)

My puter at home goes to sleep at night. Laptop goes into hibernation when we are done, Dean's puter....not sure what he does with it! The puter here at work gets shut down at the end of the day.

I work around the house for an hour or so. Check back in on the Computer. In and out all day unless I will be gone for a while.

I usually hibernate off/on during the day and turn it off at night. Yesterday, though, I couldn't get my monitor to engage after hibernation so I had to use the power button on the PC to shut down and reboot. That fixed the problem but I didn't like doing it.

None of the above. I leave my computer and monitor on all day and night. I have it set up so I can hear when an email comes in in just about every part of the house.

I've never had a monitor burn out on me.
Never lost a hard drive.
Never had a problem of any kind because I leave everything on.

it really depends...most of the time hibernate, but with midwest weather, often it's off in an instant!

Power save - I have it set to shut off the monitor and hard drive after 1 hour of no activity. I never shut it off unless I am leaving for a week or so.

Mine has never hibernated... it is either on or off (mostly off, though!).

What's the difference between sleep, hibernate, and power save?

After mine sits about 5 minutes unattended, the screen goes black, and the fan in the tower shuts down.

Sometimes when I come back to it, I have to log in Windows, but am not sure if it is 'always' or not. I don't even know where/how I get it set this way. I check in here maybe once an hour, more or less. What would maybe be my best setting, and how would/should I do it with Windows XP?

I leave the tower on and turn the monitor off when I am away from the computer, and turn machine completely off when I go to bed.

Go to your Control Panel and look for something called Power Options (?). That will allow you to change your settings.

I leave the below mentioned site on when I leave my office room no problems yet. My cat is not interested in this site and since I have the computer on mute the background noises don't bother us. I do turn it off once in a while to let the system catch up with itself. I will sit in my rocker in front of the tV and crochet or record things on my tape recorder. I pop in on the forums all day long (I don't want to miss anything!!) and other sites and AOL boards.

I've lost my interest in sewing right now but leave the sewing machine open just in case.

I don't bother cooking either but I have all the latest appliances I think and a well stocked emergency larder.
I can fall asleep around 4 in the morning and then get up around 8. Wish I had a more structured life but am grateful it is not full of excitement really.
I try to get out of the house everyday and walk the mall or Walmart aisles.

Let me make a correction....mine is not like Jodi, but it is like Jodi's computer.

If I'm coming back to it, I just leave it on. Putting it into standby mode makes backups of all your files, which takes up a lot of space on your computer. When I'm not going to use it for awhile, I turn it off, and unplug it. A computer uses 75% of the power it uses when it's on even when it's off. I do it to save electricity.

My BFF gets turned on in the morning and turned off at night and I run a virus scan when I'm going to be away from the house for a while.

Laptop (work)...Hibernate & unplug...it takes too long to restart it...no patience I guess! LOL!

I do try to shut it down at least once a week or so to clear the memory...or if there are updates to be installed...or if it starts to run too slowly.

Main home computer...just leave it on unless same as above (too slow, updates). It does shut down the monitor after a certain amount of time (don't remember what we have it set at)

We do put the cable modem on "Standby" when not home or in bed...cuts the outside link.

Mine is on 24/7 unless I go away and I completely shut it down.

I shut mine down when I go away or go to bed, otherwise I leave it on. Last summer when we had severe lightening I unplugged everything.
