Trust me, I loved all three recipes!

Icebox fruit cake

1 can Eagle Brand milk

1 1/2 boxes of vanilla wafers crushed
2 cups of chopped pecans
1 bottle of Maraschino cherries cut in half
1/2 cup of coconut
Mix milk & wafers until thick. Add nuts & cherries into stiff batter. Press into a loaf pan sprinkle coconut on top. Chill & keep in the ice box..

Sausage pinwheels

2 cans of Crescent Rolls
1 lb of sausage
Shredded Cheese

Press triangles together to form rectangles. Spread raw sausage real thin & evenly cover with shredded cheese to cover all dough. Roll tightly & wrap in tin foil & freeze. Slice thin & bake at 400* for 20 minutes. Spray pan with Pam

Datenut balls

1 8oz chopped dates
3/4 cup of sugar
1 stick of butter
1 cup chopped finely nuts
2 1/2 cups of rice krispies
Confectioners sugar

Cook dates, sugar & butter stirring constantly until butter is absorbed. Add nuts & pour over rice krispies in a large bowl. Mix well & roll into small balls & dust with confectioners sugar.

I make the sausage pinwheels too and we really love them.
I use the original recipe from taste of home and do not freeze mine at all. They cut easily with out having to freeze them.
Sausage Pinwheels Recipe

Now don't do what I did last time I made them and got distracted and tried to use an entire lb of the sausage! they were big pinwheels lol but still very good. I too like a little cheese on mine. I lay out and roll mine on parchment with a tiny bit of flour very easy and don't stick.

wow, Laura, your recipes are wonderful. Found your recipe last night on recipe site and had everything on hand I needed. Guest came into town today and had it ready for lunch today. Mixed it last night . Must tell you , there is very little left right now. Everyone has copies of your recipes so when they go home will made more. Making the sausage pinwheels for tomorrow. Thanks for sharing.

Grilled Tomato Sauce From Steven Raichlen Like soup, tomato sauce is one of the dishes you're least likely to think of grilling. But there is a powerful reason to try this sauce. Beyond the mere novelty factor, grilling imparts a gutsy smoke flavor to the sauce and heightens the natural sweetness of the vegetables. Don't take just my word for it. For thousands of years, Mexicans have grilled tomatoes, onions and peppers to make rich-tasting salsas. I have adapted the technique to make an exceptionally flavorful tomato sauce. Serve the sauce over grilled polenta, with any simple grilled fish, or with just about any cooked pasta. Makes about 3 1/2 cups. 5 lucious, ripe red tomatoes 2 - 2 1/4 pounds total, cut in half crosswise, and stem ends removed 1 medium size white onion, peeled and cut into quarters 1 rib celery 4 cloves garlic, peeled and skewered on a wooden toothpick or small bamboo skewer 3 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil 1 tsp. oregano 1/2 tsp. hot pepper flakes 1 bay leaf 6 fresh basil leaves coarse salt (Kosher or Sea salt) freshly ground black pepper 1/4 to 3/4 cup chicken stock, vegetable stock or water Cook the tomatoes, onions, celery and garlic in greased and preheated grill (George Foreman grill) until nicely browned. You may need to cook the vegetables in more than one batch. Transfer the grilled vegetables and let cool. Finely chop the onions, celery and garlic by hand or in a food processor. If using a food processor, run machine in spurts. Heat olive oil in large non-reactive sauce pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, celery and garlic, oregano, hot pepper flakes and bay leaf and cook until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Coarsely puree tomatoes and juices with the basil in a food processor. Add the tomato mixture to the sauce pan, with the vegetables. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then let sauce simmer gently until thick and richly flavored 8-10 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. The sauce should be thick but pourable. If it is too thick, add a little stock or water. Remove and discard the bay leaf. The sauce can be refrigerated, covered up to 4 days. Or frozen for up to 2 months. Let the sauce come to room temperature then reheat it in a non-reactive sauce pan over medium heat, stirring often.

Barnmom, I think you're right but I believe that Bobby's part of the world, there in Florida, may be more progessive than here. LOL Bobby, I don't think that when his mother is gone it will make any difference. Her cooking will just be "better" in retrospect. I would be asking her for her recipes now, if you're on speaking terms, then you can say "but it's your Mom's recipe." Annie

coconut, how WILL Aunt Coke be able to cook Thanksgiving dinner without help? It won't be the same, you know. Poor Aunt Coke... Diane and RR, she will indeed be five in November. I know, it's hard to believe. Sigh. I'm going to cry when she gets on that bus for Kindergarten..... Deanna, just borrow some young mother's small children! I borrowed nieces and nephews and neighbors until I got Makayla and Bud. (grin Yes, Bruvver does need to learn. First, though, he needs to learn to use the potty. I'm making hers for Christmas morning.

So you really don't cook the sausage before you put it on the crescents? Italian sausage??

juellie1962, they are the same as when you cook sausage balls. You don't cook the sausage before mixing them with the mix and cheese.

No don't cook the sausage.

I promise you, they are delicious!

I don't cook the sausage it has plenty time to cook in the oven.
You use breakfast sausage like in a tube raw. Like Jimmy Dean or Tennessee pride, etc.

My special sausage is Jimmy Dean, and I use their sage flavored or maple. Both are excellent.

No you don't cook the sausage, it is in the oven for 20 minutes and has plenty of time to cook.

On a side note, with the date nut balls. Once you have mixed the hot date mixture with the Rice Krispies, let it cool for a while. the balls will stick together much more easily.

With the Icebox Fruitcake--Linda made a great observation, use the tin foil that doesn't stick to food..

Thanks for clarifying about the sausage! It just seemed to me that it wouldn't cook well enough all rolled up in a crescent!

You slice the roll into 1/3 of an inch slices. With them being sliced like that it makes a pinwheel and the sausage gets cooked in the oven.
