Do you ever check out fads like this to see if they are dangerous. This particular fad was started by the "elite" in California and it spread like a virus. Have you Googled the dangers of Himalayan salt?

Glenda...the Mole Hole has been gone a long time, and to the best of my knowledge there are no cook and bake stores here. I guess I could check TJ Maxx and see if they have them.

Interesting - would definitely be a good topic of conversation. I can't imagine that Himalayan salt is really good for you though - since any type of sodium isn't good for people in the quantities consumed by most.

I've noticed more and more people commenting about how sea salt, kosher salt, and you name it other "designer" salt is "better" for you. Kind of a misconception from a health perspective I think.

I have some, it was given as a gift last Christmas. I've used a little bit, but I like plain table salt. Not that I use it a lot. I feel like all these salts are a waste of money.

It is taken from a place where volcanoes erupt and farmers who live there worry about the heavy metals in the soil killing their crops. It is fluoride and aluminum that worries most people.

It has a light translucent pink color and is often sold in crystal form.

The reason for the special color in Himalayan pink salt has to do with the addition of a number of different minerals present in the salt. In addition to sodium, potassium, iron, magnesium, calcium, and copper are all present in trace amounts. These additional minerals transfer color to the salt, with iron creating the pleasing pink color.

The salt is harvested in the foothills of the Himalayan mountain range and is essentially fossilized sea salt. Because of its taste and color appeal, it was used for currency in ancient times and it may still serve this purpose in modern days. Primarily, people from Nepal trade Himalayan pink salt for grain, which does not grow well or profusely in the foothills. Today, it may be more likely that the salt is sold and currency used to purchase grain.

People praise Himalayan pink salt for its crunch, and also because the salt in crystallized form is considered pure and unrefined. Due to lack of refining, it doesn�t lose its mineral content, as do other salts. It can be a bit healthier to consume, but it is still salt. While a little salt in the diet is excellent, don�t forget that a little goes a long way. Too much salt can easily translate to health problems like high blood pressure and water retention.

I still think it's neat...and you're right,Glenda! People can (and will) find fault in most anything! Evidence shows that cellphones are dangerous and there's that they can cause brain cancer...but I don't see folks getting rid of them.

It is pretty, and just for information found this on Wilipedia (google) stating that some specimens checked contained 95-96 sodium chloride with 2-3% gypsum and 10 other minerals. Personally, I would rather not eat it but use it as decorations. I do use sea salt, but made commercially here. Just a thought.

What a coincidence. Glenda, Just yesterday I was reading about Himalayan Pink Salt on a food blog. Let us know how you like the crunch. That would be the only thing about it that may disturb me...it's a texture "thing". But I think if you choose your food dish with some thought to that then that characteristic might actually complement it. Maybe a chicken salad dish with celery, onions, etc.

Bump, if I run across a bottle, I'll pick you one up. I don't generally shop at Williams Sonoma this time of year because of traffic congestion but Whole Foods may carry it and I'll be by there in the next couple of weeks.
