I really like to hear the wrens in the spring as well as the frogs and toads.

We have an owl somewhere and I love to hear him asking "Who, who?" LOL. I also love the honking of the geese and seeing them fly in their V formation. I live in town and think it is wonderful to hear nature sounds here.

We have coyotes, owls, hawks and whippoorwills, but ours have a Texas accent, and sound more like they are saying "john wills widow" :^) We also have lots of meadowlarks who join the chorus every morning. I also like wind...not storm velocity, just a nice breezy wind. Our Posie cat likes to sit in the window and glare at the squirrels, which causes them to chitter and gripe at her, tails a'flying! It's too cute!

When walking in the woods and I hear a sudden swish of branches and crackling of dried leaves, if I am lucky, I will catch a glimpse of deer that live on my property.

Another interesting noise is the twittering of the killdeers They leave and return at intervals. When nesting, if they are disturbed the adult will try to lure you away by faking being injured and when you near (her/him) it will suddenly fly away.

Everyone should get to hear a whipporrwill. I think there are birding sites with recordings but I do not remember how I came to find them. Anyone know?

While in Yosemite, the male elk were loud with their mating calls, and so interesting. It was neat to hear them at all hours of the day and night!

We hear sea gulls and other shore birds, around here. Owls are often heard further inland.
I had never heard birds calling, singing, or "conversing", after dark, until we moved here. They do it all the time.

The sound of eagles is always a thrill, though I heard them often here on the river.

Wind in the trees, rain on the roof.

I don't care for the sound of coyotes at night.

Oops, rain on the roof is an indoor sound.

Tree toads in spring, and then bullfrogs in what used to be our swimming pool. Some of them get so loud it's comical.

We love our noisy summer nights, especially the sound of the katydids.

The Canada geese in fall, but even better at the end of winter, heralding the arrival of fall.

In winter, the dee-dee-dee of chickadees, and in spring their two-note (A, G) mating call. The spooky call of Mourning Doves. Scrappy blue jays remind me of my parents' home in Florida, where jays were noisy all day.

And I love the sound of a fruit tree filled with bees: the promise of a good apple season, as well as an affirmation of life.

Jaybird, we have chuck will's widows here that are a lot like the whipporwill, that's probably what you're hearing.

I love the sound of the Canada geese flying overhead, too. And I really the SIGHT of fireflies in the late spring and summer. And peepers. Love to hear the peepers and the birdsong of smaller birds in the spring when they're getting ready to nest.

I hate the sound of coyotes because when you hear them all worked up in a frenzy, it usually means they've killed something. As people who raised 2 deer, it would send chills up our spines.

I love the sounds of the kids in the neighborhood playing, and Buffy barking at the mailman. They know her by name, and know she is harmless. Lucky her.

Hearing migrating geese is always a thrill. For how many centuries have people heard that sound?

I like the 'crunch' of dry snow underfoot.

There's a creek on one side of our house. There's sound there all year -- toads, birds, right now about ten mallards whose quacking is driving our Westie crazy.

One spring (in another house) a pair of red-tail hawks raised their two offspring near us. We could watch the parents teach the young-uns how to hunt. The four would line up along the peak of the church roof behind our house, and 'screeee' as they stooped on mice in the churchyard.

Deer frequent the path along the creek. *They* are soundless, but when our Westie sees them, he has a special 'deer-bark' to alert us. He's learned to just say, "They're HERE," and be quiet.

I like to hear a cricket on a dark, silent night.

I like the soft creaking of trees in a wind.

The 'tee-dee' of a redwing blackbird often announces spring.

I too remember the buzz of a rattlesnake (CA) when stepping too close, coyotes close, yet far enough way, early morning and late afternoon when all the little birds are settling in. And the geese flying away in the fall and returning in the spring.
Lots of things in Nature to remind us of the beauty of where we live or travel to no matter where it is.

Speaking of loons, I remember going fishing at Loon Lake in Mn.years ago. I thought the cry of the loon was so haunting. I do like to hear the honking of the geese as they fly over. I don't hear many nature sounds in town except squirrels.

Chisue, if you listen at the right times, you'll hear the deer, too. They grunt to call their fawns, in the spring. The fawns bleat to call their moms and they squeal when they nurse. And they all "blow" when they're startled or in danger.

When a fawn is sucking on your earlobe and squealing in that ear while it sucks and scrapes at the back of the lobe with it's little bottom teeth, your heart will MELT! (Your ear will bleed, but your heart will melt!)

flamingo -- I've heard them 'blow', but never the other sounds. One of the main streets in our town is called Deerpath, but the *current* deer path runs N-S for 30 miles along the creek! Most people in town know to be alert when driving -- or running or biking. DH and our dog frequently see deer on their walks. One of our neighbors was so frustrated by having her garden repeatedly denuded that she called the police early one misty morning, saying, "There are brown leather coated vandals in my backyard." (Not too bright. The cops rolled out of their squads with shotguns at the ready! They were not amused.)

So...why did a fawn think it could get milk out of your EAR? LOL

Ron, thanks for bringing back one of my childhood memories. My Mother was from N. M. and every other summer we would drive to Fort Sumner to spend a few weeks with our relatives. One of the highlights of my trip was being able to sleep outside in the back yard on some old metal beds with my cousins. The night was so clear it was almost like you could reach up and snatch a star right out of the sky. Those were magical nights! Thanks for reminding me.

You're most welcome, mcmann. We lived at 6,000 feet in New Mexico. That elevation combined with the very dry air gave us some fantastic stargazing. Especially in a remote area without any light pollution. It was incredible.

Meadowlarks. I had forgotten about Meadowlarks. I'd hear them all the time as a kid, but, now I never see or hear them in this area. Something must have changed in the habitat.

Frogs down at the lake, cicadas, owls, various birds including canadian geese. Somebodies beagles on a rabbit hunt (always around 2 am). The "buck, buck" sounds the squirrels make.

Oh, let's not forget quail! I love love LOVE the sound of a Bobwhite calling. We hear them here, but we never see them. They live way down the hill near the farmer's field, I think.

Chisue- when we were raising Blossom, Woody would fix her bottle while I made her go potty. She would suckle my poor earlobe while we all did that, in anticipation of her bottle. It was quite the routine. I had to stop her finally, though, because I truly was bleeding and it hurt so much by that point. But the "wheeeeeee-l" in my ear, from her little voice, OMG, I loved that.

When I was younger, I thought the "hooo-hoooo" I was always hearing was owls. Turned out- doves! Duh. lol
