Amelia Bedelia

I can't believe it! My DS and DDIL are pregnant and are thinking of naming the baby (it is a girl) Amelia. Right away I say, "Oh, like Amelia Bedelia", no they reply, they don't know who Amelia Bedelia is. They were thinking Amelia Earhart.

I can't believe they don't know who Amelia Bedelia is! Well, my DDIL is from Indonesia, so she might not know, but my son grew up in a house with a sister and we certainly had Amelia Bedelia books!

So, I quickly went to Amazon and had two books sent to them!

But to top it off, one of my very good friends, who was a librarian for many years does not know who Amelia Bedelia is! And she had 2 daughters! Of course, I just told her what BTW and LOL mean, she had no idea about those either!

Any ways I love the name Amelia and hope that is what our new grand will be named in May! Amelia Earhart is a great hero to be named for.

Does anyone else not know who Amelia Bedelia is?

Here's a hint, Amelia is told to dress the chicken and she makes clothes for it! She is asked to draw the drapes and when asked why she did not draw them, her reply was, "yes I did, here's the picture I drew".

of course, but they came out when my boys were small and were typical 1st, 2nd grade reading..she's a kick..that Amelia..

I know 1 Amelia and we call her Millie she graduated with my oldest last year.

YES! I recently read two Amelia Bedelia books to my granddaughters. The five year old "gets it", and thinks it's funny, but the two year old, doesn't. (yet)

Amelia is a pretty name.

I admit it...I have been a grinch in the past-well the last few years that we lived in Philadelphia. You have to keep in mind that where we lived it was a rough area of the city and so not too many "little" kids would come around. You would however, get a lot of older kids-you know the ones with attitudes and big mouths. No costumes to speak of-just maybe a sports themed tee shirt or jersey if that. What I thought was funny is that these older kids would come out of their homes to trick or treat, yet no one handed out candy from their homes. (sigh) It was unsafe to open your doors in my old neighborhood so I would turn out the lights, go upstairs and watch a movie with the kids. This year was very different! I have some halloween decor to put out-stuff from the old days. I even found some old costumes that I made for the kids. On Friday a few of Drews new friends pulled up and had with them 4 pumpkins which they sat out on the driveway and carved. I thought it was a fun thing to do since Drew hasn't lived there too long and when they left they left the carved pumpkins behind for us to keep-kinda a welcome to the area gift....so sweet and they did a great job carving too!! All in all we had about 50 kids-I had way more candy than I really needed but keep in mind it was raining off and on plus there was a baseball (world series) game on which I am sure was a distraction. I had a great time sitting out when I could and talking to the neighbors...next year I will have a better idea of volume and will get more decor to make the house look good!! Cheers! Susie

Blonde jokes will never be as funny as the real thing. For example: Discussing compass directions with a young brunette receptionist who wanted to know which way her home faced & didn't have a clue. I explained that if she knew which way was East, she could figure it out. I got a blank stare so I asked her which side the sun came up on. Her answer: "The left". The office fax machine was set up so that after inputting a long distance telephone #, each user had to press a 'PAUSE' button before inputting his/her personal code for billing purposes, then 'ENTER'. The instructions were spelled out directly above the machine. At least 3 salespeople complained that they couldn't get their faxes through so the staff would walk them through it. When they got to 'PAUSE', that's what they did - they'd stop & stare at the machine for a few minutes before proceeding! None of these were blonde & all were making mid-6 figure incomes. You can't make this stuff up!

Thanks for all the responses. Excellent suggestion to check her eyes, but we have, and they're fine. And yes, we've read to her since she was a tiny baby. She used to love being read to, many books at a time. I think it was about three years ago when she started to resist. I was specifically talking about me reading to her, though I didn't make that clear. I do feel like I've tried a huge variety of books of all sorts. I'll also notice when she's interested in something, then take us to the library to find a book on the subject It's not an issue of making time away from distractions. I've tried reading at different times - after school, after dinner, before bed, even first thing in the morning. Her usual response is, "Well, I'm going to go [play - cut up paper - go to sleep - get something to eat]. Why don't you finish the book by yourself?" It's exactly what her mother, my sister, was like as a child. And she hates to read now. Now that my niece can read herself, I've tried asking her to read to me, or asking her to alternate . . . words, sentences, pages . . . in a book. I can often catch her attention for one book the first time I try something, but then she doesn't want to do it again. Her teacher says she's reading above grade level and fluently (for a kid), so they have no concerns about her. I think I'm going to try some magazines and joke books. Both of those seem like they might capture her attention, and they're short enough that she might actually sit still to read them. I like the books on tape idea, but does that really promote reading? Labmomma said, "you have to find her passion." I think that's right, but the problem, as I see it, is that her passions involve *doing* things, not reading about other people doing them. She is a *very* motion-oriented child. She watches television while jumping on a mini-trampoline or hanging upside down off the back of the sofa, she eats dinner while rocking on her chair, she deals with waiting in line by spinning like a top. She's able to fit within the rules at school, but everyone knows that she needs to move a lot. She doesn't have an attention problem - she can concentrate ferociously on things she wants to concentrate on. But where another kid might stay still and listen to a story out of inertia (and thus get interested), she'll be up and away. Thanks for the recommendations on magazines. It's not exactly what I hoped for, but I think it might work. Short and to the point. At least she'll be reading! (And here I was hoping for "The Chronicles of Narnia" and "A Circle in Time" within the next year or two ....:)

Just finished Little Bee. I had looked forward to it but didn't like it as much as I thought I would. Now I'm reading The Tenderness of Wolves. I like it. I just started volunteering at our public library's used bookstore. It's fun to see what they have for sale, meet the customers and other volunteers. I liked Edgar Sawtelle, but it seemed long. Didn't care for Memory Keeper's Daughter. I thought it was a mean, stupid thing for the father to do, and it troubled me too much. As for audio books, the reader can really help or hurt a book. I have loved the #1 Ladies Detective series--and the reader of the books (all?) LeCat really makes them come alive--she's terrific!

I love Amelia Bedelia. She was always doing funny stuff, but could fix it all with some good cooking. I like the name Amelia. One of my best friends in first and second grade was named that. She went by "Amy".

I hadn't heard of her until my DD read some of her books probably 10 years ago. I liked them and so did DD. Fun books!

my kids loved Amelia Bedelia. One of my daughters who was a camp counselor used to take a couple of her books (along with Junie B Jones books) to read to the kids at night. It didn't matter if they were young elementary or older elementary -- they loved to hear them again too.

I've never heard of Amelia Bedelia. I've heard of Bonnie Bedelia. And one of my (now deceased) Aunts is named Amelia. I've always loved the name Amelia.

I have heard of Amelia Bedelia but I didn't know it was from a child's book. I am glad I learned something today.
My granddaughter's American name is Amelia. Her Japanese name is Mio and it's what we call her.

Timing of those was perfect for my 2 DD's ('64 on) and yet I've never heard of her. I read to/with them and they loved to read. Strange, and sorry we missed them..

My best friends GD is named Amelia. We call her Amelia Bedelia too. I worked in the elementary schools for many years so I know who she is.

A friend (the librarian) sent me this info this morning on Amelia Earhart.

"I love the name Amelia. As I was listening to the news yesterday and NOT READING I heard that on a uninhibited island, bones from a human finger, a pre-war bottle and a woman's compact was discovered. Now, they are thinking that perhaps Amelia survived the crash and may have died from lack of water. They also found fish bones and clam shells that were lined up to maybe catch rain water for drinking."

My girls grew up reading Amelia Bedelia books in the late 80's and early 90's. Fun books, I still have some of them for keepsakes.

I loved Amelia Bedelia books when I was a kid. I used to get them all the time at our public library and at the school library. Loved them!

I used to read all the Amelia Bedelia books when I was a kid and now I'm excited that my DD (6) is starting to read them too. Not sure she quite "gets" her yet, but they're fun!

I think Amelia is a pretty name. We've known 2 girls, one went by Amelia and the other by Millie.
