Ugly Sweater parties....are they in your area?

Where did they get started???

Anybody know anything about them...they are a real "rage" here.

Jeff's girlfriend went to one last night...

My daughter Criss and her husband are invited to one...

She said our goodwill doesn't have any sweaters left...people are buying them all out.

She also said there were a bunch of boys in there last night looking for ugly Christmas sweaters...(older teens)

I just read on my DGS Facebook that all of the kids in his school are having an Ugly Sweater day on the 19th to kick off their Christmas break.
I've never heard of it either.

That must be what those boys at the mall were up to yesterday. I saw them and couldn't believe they'd be seen out and about looking like that! LoL They were kinda cute. One had on a red cardigan with snowflake beading. Now, personally, I thought it was pretty, but not on a teenage boy! LoL

My dream laundry room is about to be slightly modified but it is a dream. It's about 13'x10'. All cabinets are built-in and I have a single pane french door that leads to a deck plus a window so there's lot's of light. One side consists of room for my ironing board to always be down. I have a great heavy duty stainless drying rack and hanger that is positioned over the heating vent on the floor. I have a Jiffy 4000 steamer. I have a built in craft table with cabinets above and to the side that house my sewing machine, craft supplies, wrapping paper and ribbon and all my dog grooming equipment. I have 2 Bichons so I have a grooming table on the craft table as well. The other side is long counter all the way with a 47" dual stainless steel built-in sink at the end. I wanted it large enough so a bucket could go on one side and I could still wash a dog on the other. I have a TV mounted under cabinet that I can't image living without, makes folding and ironing tolerable. Under counter, I have a True (Bev-Aire) restaurant grade double frig. That is where I keep my cocktails to make ironing tolerable....joking,maybe. I use it to store drinks for the kids and really use the extra space when entertaining as I can stage huge platters of food, etc. Above is all built-in storage for linens, rags, pool towels, dog shampoo, etc. Modification will be happening very soon. When I designed it, I used undercounter washer and dryer but not only are they on their last leg but their capacity no longer can serve our family of 4. I'm going to cut into my beautiful long counter and put in some LG Steams. It will no longer be one long counter but I believe it's a sacrafice I have to make for capacity. i will also change to stone on counters. Unless someone has a really huge undercounter washer and dryer they can recommend, the demo may start this weekend. I designed this laundry room when we did an addition about 7 years ago. I've yet to see a laundry that I love more than mine.

Timeless is such a hard word for me. I think that white cabinets, marble, real butcher block, natural stone, some openness and natural light are timeless to me. Granted the MOST timeless thing to me is functionality. When I started looking for my first house my dad said something that stuck with me, "Look past ugly, you can change ugly --you can't change location, size and layout (easily)- - it is a lot easier take down some wallpaper, lighting fixtures and sea foam green carpet then it is to add an extension or re-arranging walls and be in a different neighborhood." Now when I first started my kitchen reno FUCTION was the most important thing to me, I opened a wall, closed another, moved all my appliances around, added appliances, added an eating bar into my living room and huge amounts of counter space. That to me is timeless, my finishes however are not. If I were to sell my house 6 months from now, I am POSITIVE people would balk at my two tone cabinets, one white with a glaze, my big farm sink, my ORB handles and fixtures and busy granite, the fact I choice new white appliances over stainless steel,, my beveled arabesque, my choice to use multiple big mouldings and other things that I can't think of right now. But to be honest I don't care. I started this project looking for validation from friends/family on what to do and was so unhappy with the results. My mom had a 1940's farm house that she recently re-did the sprawling kitchen with ivory shaker cabinets and black movement filed granite and super top end stainless appliances, restoration hardware lights, simple and beautiful, Many times, by many people called timeless and classic--but I would never want it in my house. I finally decided to treat my kitchen like a reflection of myself, I am 28, I am a housewife with no kids who loves to entertain and does so at least weekly. I am Italian as is my husband with HUGE families that are very close. I love makeup and wear a lot of it, I do not usually leave the house ( or my dressing room for that matter) with out the longest fake eyelashes I can find. I have hip length long blonde hair. It is not uncommon to find me in the kitchen with a pair of 6 inch stilettos on and if I think I put on enough jewelry for the day-- I will go put on just one more piece ;-) So why can't my kitchen reflect me?... It may be over the top, it may be easily dated, it may even be deemed tacky, busy or gaudy... but I can tell you I look just right standing in the middle of it, cause honestly I am a little bit of all of those things. BUT my layout is perfect and functional, it is opened enough to entertain, but closed enough to give me peace when I want it. My cabinets are solid, my moldings are classic (albeit there are a lot of them) my appliances are quality as are finishes-- to me THAT is timeless.... I feel finishes are personal preference in all aspects of life... My ultra crystal filled ostrich feathered giant...

The first thing that came to mind is a pendant a longtime friend and local jeweler created for me. My DH & I were high school sweethearts and we became engaged during college. To buy me a ring, he worked a side job while attending classes and doing an internship. It was a gold band with a 1/4 ct. diamond in a simple raised setting. I was thrilled with it, but he regretted the stone was small. On our 25th anniversary he surprised me with a new ring. I was touched, but had such a sentimental attachment to the one I'd worn for decades that he had this pendant made - the circle is my original ring. It represents my design philosophy because it's a simple, practical piece made of fine materials that has a personal attachment or connection. I photographed it on an unembellished black cashmere sweater (which also reflects what I'm drawn to - style/color). The ring is yellow gold but the bail and diamond setting was done in white gold, so it works whether I'm wearing gold or silver jewelry. It's casual enough to wear with a t-shirt, but can look elegant with a velvet dress. This piece isn't showy and wouldn't elicit "Wows" but it is unique and special to me. Same can be said about my homes and how I've chosen to furnish and decorate them.

My online shopping was all good: Kohl's, Best Buy, LL Bean, Land's End, Amazon and Ebay. I have my items sent to work as our neighborhood has sadly had things stolen from porches. There were some things I ordered late and they have not arrived yet - but I knew the dates were post-Christmas when I ordered. Only one is a semi-gift (a jacket for my husband who lost a lot of weight and needs one in a smaller size). The upside of those is that I'm shipping them to Son#1's place of work, as I won't be back to my own job for a couple of weeks. So we're going to meet him for dinner once he has both my orders. Katlan's rude checkout clerk reminded me of my rude clerk story from several years ago. I was buying Christmas ornaments to decorate a metal tree I'd gotten from a specialty store. The sum total was probably more than I'd spent for the tree itself. I was buying a couple of other things too. As the clerk was ringing the things up we realized that there was something wrong with one of the boxes I was buying. The clerk ended up being really rude about it. We finished the purchase with the plan that I would go way back to the seasonal section to get another box - even the cashier manager had come over to help because she heard the rude cashier. However, after starting to walk back to switch the boxes, instead I turned around and went over to customer service and told them I wanted to return everything. Everything?! Yes. I said that the clerk had been really rude and and that made me mentally step back and realize that I was overspending. Customer service wanted to know who the clerk had been, but I said that I understood that it's the stressful Christmas shopping season and I didn't want to point her out, but just wanted my money back. (I ended up getting the tree ornaments from Joanne Fabrics and used some JF Bucks I had to pay!) I guess a thank you to the rude clerk for helping me to spend less?

I just heard (via my Sunday paper) that the best Christmas gift this year is a cardigan sweater. Though they can be beautiful, warm, or ugly. The ugliest sweater I ever saw was owned by my friend Eleanor at work. It actually looked like a big Christmas gift, complete with a big, ugly bow! She wore it every Christmas to our office party.

Where did they get started? There are dozens of people on the internet who claim to "have started it". Ugly Sweater parties have been around at least since the eighties. I think because it is a seasonal thing the Sweater Parties just don't go away, like the White Parties of the eighties did. One of the long time lasting parties is the Ugly Bridesmaid Dress Party. A great idea for a bridal shower. Pull out one of the horrible bridesmaid dresses that you were forced to wear to your cousin's wedding, but could not bear to part with, because you paid so much money for it. Or if you have been blessed with friends and relative who have good taste and don't have an ugly bridesmaid dress, find one at Goodwill that some other poor soul else had to wear.

I don't know why anyone would have to go to Goodwill to find an ugly sweater. I got tons of them in my drawers. I assumed everyone did?

There have been several postings on our local Craig's List, looking for ugly Christmas sweaters. So I guess it's happening in the KC area too. I haven't been to a party like that and am not likely to get invited to one ... but I bet it's funny!

My DS and girlfriend went to one here, for a college Christmas party. We have 2 Goodwill stores in our area. Sure enough, he found two that they wore.

My DD went to such parties in college in the early '90's. They also had ugly prom dresses, and since she was small, she wore the dress she wore to cotillion in 6th grade. She paired that with white leather pumps, a rhinestone ankle bracelet, lots of blue rhinestone jewelry, and a bow of the dress fabric in her hair. Her friends were truly impressed with the awfulness of what was quite nice when appropriately accessorized when she was 11 or 12.

Ahhh, methinks I now have the answer to an Ebay question. Often when I do a clothing search using the manufacturers name, posts come up with UGLY sweater in the title. I could understand one occasional posting but lately it's been at least one every time I go on there. I was wondering why so many would say they had an ugly sweater for sale.

My son went to one last Christmas. He went to Goodwill and got a woman' sweater to wear. Somehow women's Christmas sweaters look really bad on men.

Ugly clothes, not just sweaters, are all the rage for the teen/college crowd. I have a son and daughter, 17 and 19 and I am constantly on the lookout for ugly, but unique, "fashions" for them. My son, a senior in HS, especially likes the ugly clothes. I am amazed he will wear this stuff to school, but it gives me an incentive to try to outdo myself in the thrifting. But to try to get him to buy a pair of clearance jeans at Kohls, forget it!! They've go to be the most expensive pair at Zumiez, go figure.

I've never heard of this before! My DD is in college, but I haven't noticed her buying any ugly clothes lately - and she buys a LOT of clothes!

There is an Ugly Xmas Ornament contest at the cigar lounge near me. You bring in your ornament for their tree and they mark it with a little number. The one who get voted ugliest ornament gets a prize of a box of cigars.

My niece's first grade class had an Ugliest Gourd contest at Thanksgiving. Didn't know it was part of a trend.

Personally, I think *all* Christmas sweaters are ugly!
