Cold, Cold, Cold.........

Took Georgy on our daily walk. We usually walk an hour and 1/2. This morning it was 28 but the wind was howling and it felt more like 20.....not to mention a dusting of snow. My glove got wet from throwing the frisbee and hand was freezing so we cut walk down to 45 minutes. Not use to this weather in VA...what's it like where you are?

Beautiful snow and 30 degrees right now. Our evergreens are soo beautiful.. Love the first snowfall.. Good ole Indiana weather...

It's a balmy 10ÃÂº this morning, with a dusting of snow also. We have had colder mornings already, just to remind us that colder days are a-comin'.

Well, Goofy507, your winters in Minnesota are serious enough that I'll bear your tip in mind. But do you get a lot of fluctuation in winter temperatures? See, in Montreal, you can count on seeing both -30C and +5C within January (I think that's about -20F and 41F). An outdoor plant with poor root insulation tends to fare about as well as a sirloin steak left outside would: fine as long as it's dead cold, but after a few thaws and refreezes, the cells are damaged and it's no good. I've only ever been able to confidently overwinter superhardy herbs like chives in a pot outdoors. Digging holes in the veggie patch to sink potted perennials is a common end-of-season garden task here. I was guessing that the Sarracenia Purp would need the same treatment, but as usual, only experimentation would tell me. Maybe next year if I have more that one plant I'll be a braver. As for THIS year, my plant ended up in the fridge in a mason jar with some dampened coir. I couldn't get hold of Sphagnum in time, but the coir seems to do a good job at holding moisture. The plant is thus far supple with no signs of disease. I look forward to seeing how it takes to being woken up. Sincere thanks to all for the council.

My thoughts (I'm northwest of Nashville) are that there's not much use in covering anything. I've tried to plant things that were appropriate to my zone. The couple plants that I knew were "stretching" the zones I tried to plant in sheltered areas. If they go, they go, and I'll learn from the whole deal. My "big guys"--trees or larger shrubs that I spent more than a little money on--those guys are all hardy enough that they should shrug this off. (Or if they don't, why then I'll learn to cover them next time!) ;)

Rereading the original post, I think the original poster DOES NOT have a heat pump, but the thermostat downstairs thinks he does. Maybe it needs to be reset and reprogrammed. I have a honeywell touch screen tstat that's capable of doing hybrid, etc but I currently only have gas forced air heat, however, I'd bought a NOMA programmable tstat which had a lot of features I liked, but when I hooked it up, it would control the fan ok and would act like it was calling for heat, but heat never happened. If I jumpered the terminals, the furnace would behave normally. Rather than persist with it when it was getting cold and dark on a weekend with no NOMA technical support available, I just went and got the Honeywell. It was fine after that.

Why do new refrigerators not get cold...?

I’m wondering if anyone out there can tell me why newer refrigerators don’t get anywhere near as cold as older units...? first a brief background as to my pondering... I like drinks COLD, COLD, COLD! This was never a problem growing up as on occasion I would have to chew the ice in my drinks. Be it milk or water... now I know what everyone is thinking... “that’s so bad for you” Well you can go suck eggs. This question ain’t for you. Also if your sucking eggs came from a proper fridge they’d be as cold as ice. Anyway... I know how to use a refrigerator thermostat and my complaint is not that these refrigerators haven’t or aren’t working correctly. I believe they’ve all been working as they were intended and designed to... I’ve had an thermometer in all my fridges and they’re all holding the temperatures they’re set at. But why does it stop at 33 degrees? My old refrigerators would be set in the middle of their range and be sometimes below 30 degrees. And rarely would things other than water and strangely lettuce freeze. But what a difference a few degrees makes in beverage temp!!! So much more satisfying to have a glass of milk at 31 degrees instead of 33

I'm chilly here in Long Island. Breezy and 31 degrees, maybe getting up to 35. I went out once, but took the car. Too cold to walk unless I put on hat and gloves.

It's slightly overcast and 32ÃÂº here. If it warms up a bit, I will take the dogs for a walk. The 3 pound dog doesn't like to be outside much when it's cold out, even though she is long haired. She still gets too cold. I will probably carry her most of the way.

We got about 4 inches of snow yesterday. The dogs love playing in it, but it's a pain to get the "snowballs" off their legs and bellies!! It's 34 now, warmest it's been in days. We are supposed to be in the 20's this week - too cold for me!! Brrrrrrr!!!!

It's 30 here, but not windy so it's not bad at all unless you have to get out and work in it. anything is better than heat. I have been in the house for two days now and will escape tomorrow. I am hungry for a pizza. I always do laundry and clean on the week ends.

I about froze walking out to the car after the game this afternoon. It was 19 and windy and even though I had a scarf over my head and ears, my ears were really cold. After I had been home an hour, my legs were still cold. Guess it is time to get out the long johns and ear muffs.

SE Wisconsin:

3 or more inches of snow Friday night and Saturday morning.
Sat: Colder. Several accidents on the freeways. North bound US 45 blocked, all lanes. A double bottom truck truck skidded and blocked both lanes. Traffic mess.

Sat night: Windy, temp down to 15 F.
Sun: High was 20 F. Streets and sidewalks have been cleared. Driving conditions fairly good.

Predictions for Monday and Tuesday: Its going to be really cold: single digits overnight for two nights before it begins to moderate. Possibility for light snow on Thursday.

18 degrees now at 6 am, and our highs are in the teens for 7 of the next 10 days. I guess winter is really here. Sigh...

As of last Thursday, we'd had 22 inches of snow so far this year. We had several more inches over the weekend.

First snow of the year here ... and a lot of it in the nearby city.

Not so much near my home, and driving to this village was O.K., but they say that it's blowing harder and more snow ...

... so, being as I'm 17 km. (over 10 mi.) from home ...

... I guess I'd better get into the old wagon and head home ...

... especially as my tires are rather bald (about as bald as I) - was going to change, Sat., but store too busy.

Driving carefully.
