Yes, the "big three" failed to compete with foreign imports. I don't think that the average person has a clue about what all is invloved here, as in competing or as in possible bankruptcy. I know I don't. The bottom line is that if any one of them go under or heaven forbid all three, so will our economy. GM, Ford and Chrysler have a lot of concessions and restructuring to do, as does the UAW. But our government cannot afford to let them sink. For those of you that believe that a loan, and this is a "loan", not a "bail out", should not be given...well, just be careful what you wish for.

The UAW should have thought about this ALONGTIMEAGO. That's were it all started a long time ago. I want to hear the whole story, nothing but their story and the truth. Yea, that's never going to happen. It's time for the union to admit it's part in this and get some better leaders. Again, never gonna happen. It's hard for them to hide but the media is afraid of them and the lobbiest.
We see the big wigs but we're not seeing much ado about the UAW union. Our mouths would be hanging to the floor if we could see a time graph what has happened because of them. The math doesn't work and now they have to admit it they didn't care.

The Ad is pretty much right on except they need to tack on the UAW.

My husband printed out this ad to post on his office window. He is a quality engineer in a small firm that makes auto parts for the big 3. They have asked for concessions, price rebates, etc. for over a year now. His firm is close to going under. No bailout for them, and they don't even have a company jet!

For the fools who believe that a "loan" is not a bailout, (and a "loan" with no intent of repayment is not a loan anyway), those folks should consider detox.

Next step after getting the bailout is to claim they can't pay it back, therefore if they're required to pay it back, they'll "go bankrupt". After all, those corporate jets don't fly for free.

Next flaw in the "logic" is that bankruptcy means "going under". Naive, if not worse. Companies and people come out of bankruptcy all the time. But it sometimes takes an awakening to rattle the cages.

I know we just went through a fantasy time of year with Santa Claus, elves and more. Now comes another fantasy.

I'm tired of people watching all the small businesses go under because of the Big 3 taking advantage of them and then see people cry and whine that we can't let them go under... think about the jobs!!! What about all the jobs of the hard workers who gave those union maggots those jobs and now have lost theirs. Where's their bailout? Or if you still insist, their "loan"?

By the way, for all the Chicken Littles out there... Plymouth went under.... Oldsmobile went under.... and guess what? The world didn't implode.

Now that said, I must agree 100% that the politicians can't afford to let them be accountable. There's a lot of campaign contributions and butt-kissing there. But it's not an issue of the economy (AMC went under and we still have air to breathe) its a political issue for elections.

I'm biting my lip about the economy. Suffice to say that the taconite mines are closing. Gee, no sympathy for them, no loans, bailouts or what-have-you for them either.

Plymouth was a part of the Chrysler corporation and Oldsmobile was part of GM. They were just dropped by their parent companies.

I love it!!! I agree with toni about the UAW. I'm sure most people would love to get paid 90% of their salary & be laid off! The auto makers have been wasting tons of money for years by bowing to the demands of the UAW. Many other people in this country have to plan for their own retirements & do not have company-funded pensions. They also have to pay for at least some of the healthcare premiums & care for themselves & their families. I don't know the details, but I've read that they also pay healthcare & pension benefits to surviving spouses. Why can't they do what the rest of us do - get a life insurance policy on our spouse? For most people a layoff means collecting whatever amount of unemployment your state pays (I know in my state it's not even closed to 90% of your salary) & for many it means losing your health benefits or having to pay much more to get on your spouse's policy or use COBRA. Sorry, but there's not much downside to a layoff when you're still getting paid most of your salary & your health & other benefits continue. Most people can adjust to a 10% pay cut. I believe they did agree to temporarily suspend the jobs bank in order to get the bailout money. There were several thousand workers who were part of this. "Laying off" people when you have to continue to pay them salary & benefits is no savings to the company. Based on news reports of some of the average hourly wages of these union members, they could afford to help pay for some of their benefits. The rest of us do, often on less than what these people make. It is time for people to start being responsible for themselves & thinking that employers should provide everything. DH & I are putting away money into our 401k's & our health ins. is only partly paid by our employers. We would love to have that money every month to use for something else. But we need to prepare for our future, so we do the responsible thing.

I think that restructuring under bankruptcy would have been better for the automakers. I do worry about the jobs & the effect on the economy, especially right now. But most of those jobs could have probably been saved under bankruptcy. It would have given them a chance to get rid of those ridiculous union contracts. The union executives act like royalty & waste tons of the unions' money.

The people I feel really sorry sorry for are those like marlingardener's husband - the ones who work in support industries but aren't protected by a union & will really have to struggle if their company goes under.

I also don't understand how these companies "suddenly" find themselves so far in the hole. I'm an accountant. Even with a large company, you don't get to this point overnight. They have been really overspending for a long time & thinking that things would turn around. When you let that go long enough, it's a disaster waiting to happen. These companies should have operating capital in the bank & some "cushion" money. They should have also been looking seriously at ways to cut costs. Certainly the blame for these things lies with their management. If they were looking at their own financial reports things should have been different. Even companies need to save up for a rainy day. Also a lot of companies tend to overstaff when times are good. One of the reasons that DH's company has been able to avoid layoffs so far is that they are careful to run as lean as they can even in good times. That allows them a little breathing room when sales go down.

But you forgot one thing: we spend a shitload of money on lobbyists. So now you're out $25 billion, plus the cost of your subaru. Maybe next time you'll buy American like a real man.
