Anyone else visit the Emergency Room today?

*sigh*

My mom just called and said my sister has cut her finger and she (sis) thinks it's pretty bad. DH was gone feeding cattle, so I'm without a vehicle. I called him on his cell phone and he had just finished and was heading home. Since he was only two miles from their house, he said he'd go get sis and take her to the ER. My mom - bless her heart - would have done it, but she is 78 years old and gets rattled easily. We try not to let her drive...

I'll bet the ER will be busy today. Whadya wanna bet? :-) Please send good thoughts for sis (and my DH!) this morning. Those who have been to the Tulsa gatherings have met Sherri. The little klutz! She trips over her own shadow!

My sister is working in the emergency room today (and she worked yesterday too). She is hoping it won't be busy!!

Well DH took BooBoo to the vet. Sometimes we see different vets there and he said he really liked the one today so I hope he got his name. Sometimes I think some are more dog vets vs cat vets. maybe just a vibe I get, who knows. He said this one was a cat vet. :) He said his tooth is just chipped and nothing is exposed and it should be fine. He also gave him a shot for his asthma and said we might have to start giving him an inhaler once a day since I can't get him to take the pills. They are just so small I can't get them shoved in his mouth good enough and he spits them out when he thinks I won't notice. Hmmm. I wonder if he said anything about his weight. I have to ask DH about that..... Good to know I am not the only one that broke a tooth as a kid. Not really smart to play tag in socks in wet grass with a big tree as home base. My tooth literally got stuck in the tree and when I pulled away half of it stayed in the tree! OUCH. :) Thanks for your help.....

You might, instead of checking for other emergency clinics, since you are in a metropolitan area, check to see if there are any practices who have vets who will take on-call cases. I live in the boondocks and my practice will cover any emergency day or night with a set 'emergency' surcharge on top of the normal bill. I much prefer that because the practioner knows my pet, has access to the records and I suspect it is just simply more economical even with the surcharge. I am not condoning filthy-looking waiting rooms, but unlike a conventional practise, an ER situation is a 24-7 clinic. It's not like they can stop and attend to tidying in a non-surgical setting when they're swamped with clients..........all of whom are bad enough they need to be seen immediately. It can get pretty gross when there is no kennel worker or tech free to police up the area as it's being dirtied, and sometimes just doing the patient care takes up all the available time. I suspect you were the victim of being there at a 'bad' and stressful time. Doesn't make it any more pleasant for you, however.

Yep, Marti, occasionally visiting on the other side of the fence reveals more than just looking at the pictures. Glad you have that in your head. Also, builders are not always up on things either. They just want something that would be easy to build and fit the most potential buyers. I don't think the folks who visit these forums and watch HGTV religiously are the typical buyer. I also think that you having a more positive attitude about what your house DOES have to offer, will make a difference when it comes time for you to sell. Having a positive attitude counts a lot....everything else being equal. About granite. I know some of the HOUSE HUNTAERS shows on HGTV has all the buyers wanting the counters to be granite. BUT....I don't want it. When we do our kitchen next winter, it will be sort of a galley style kitchen, and one side will be Silestone quartz, white with flecks of gray and sparklies in it. The other side where I cook will have a stainless steel counter top. The appliances will be stainless. Not matching appliance brands either, just chose the ones that I liked the best or that fit in a small space. My cabinets I'd like to be IKEA, but DH says he want wooden cabs, and for sure they'll be white. So basically this kitchen will be a bit old fashioned with painted white cabs, hardwood floor (yeah I decided on Bellawood ash or golden teak) new throughout the house replacing the old hardwoods, and then some builtins to link the dining room to the kitchen by a widened doorway. Essentially what you are describing as your opening with a post, not at an angle, a small 2 stool bar over the pony wall which hides the stove from view in some ways. Kitchens are working spaces. They are not just show pieces, so I don't worry about mine being messed up. Right now, I have flower pots sitting on the counter beside the sink, a big bag of dogfood on the floor beside the sink, and a big shipping box on top of the trash can until I take it all out later. I know, Marti, that you worry about your kitchen mess showing from the living room. Well, is there any way that you could put a couple of bifold shutters that would be pulled closed when you expect guests or whatever? They could even be bifold FRENCH doors, and have frosted glass like my master bath door and closet doors. Light comes through, but not a clear view. Think about it anyway. They are not that expensive and the look is great. Hmmm, I saw a room in the May issue of Architectural Digest in the doctors office today. I sort of BORROWED her issue until I could scan it and show everyone how the narrow French doors hung separately (not bifold mount) would look in a narrow doorway. Sort of like the way old exterior shutters look flanking a long window, quite charming. I also want Lavender Lass to see it, since she is mentioning French doors for her sun porch.

Despising the wealthy solely because they are wealthy and for no other reason is one of the last socially acceptable prejudices in the United States. Just because someone is vulgar doesn't mean they made their money by illegal, unethical or exploitative methods, and a drug dealer or human trafficker might have exquisite taste. As far as the Victorians go, the Victorian era was a lousy time to be poor or working class in many ways. Poverty was considered a character flaw: if you were impoverished, it was your fault. The lowest level clerk or servant might get no more "salary" than permission to sleep on the floor someplace. A bootboy might not even officially get meals--he might only be allowed to eat off the dirty dinner plates before they were washed. I am not bothered by the price tag, I am bothered by the attitude about it. But Americans seem to be both fascinated and repelled by "other". On another channel, you get your own media attention by being obnoxious white trash.

Neighbors across the street from us had to call the fire department yesterday. We saw them bring shovels of ash out and dump it in the yard - not sure if it was from the fireplace or kitchen.

My DSD called to say her SO would not be at dinner this evening. They spent Christmas Eve in the ER because he unknowingly ate mushrooms in some sauce her mom made last night.

He's doing well, but understandably weak and not in the mood for any more rich food for awhile!

Bummer!! I hope it's a quick, painless visit for her!! I got some new knives earlier in the year and I've cut myself on them plenty of times...I'm not used to havin sharp knives!!

Seven stitches. ARGH! They are on their way home now! She said it was some really sharp knife they sell at a kiosk at WalMart.

Oh wow Rita. Bad enough for your sis, but I'd just read where your DH had gone out to feed the cattle, and was relieved to see it wasn't him who had to go to ER.

Funny thing is (well, not "ha ha" funny), Sherri hurts herself at least once a week. She is always in such a big hurry that she trips, she falls, she runs into things. When she moved in with my folks, it was so SHE could take care of them! My folks always joke that they're glad they lived long enough to take care of HER! :-)

I told her 4-5 days ago when she fell in the yard that if one more thing happened, she would be fired as a caregiver. LOL! She reminded me of that when she called on the way home from the ER. We joke with each other a LOT, so I said, "What kind of a sick-o is so starved for attention that they'd whack off their own finger?" LOL!

Guess I better get dressed and get on over there to help my mom make lunch!

You make a good point, justlinda. It'll be a memorable holiday. The bicentennial; July 4th 1976, my Dad was kicked by a cow while milking that evening. It took 2 steel plates and 7 screws to put his ankle back together. A day I'll never forget.

Your poor sister Â ouch!!

We haven't been to the ER, but my future DIL tripped and fell while helping my DS carry the stained glass fireplace screen, in its box, into their house. She's in agony with a sprained ankle. On crutches....... :-(

Owie! Never spent Christmas in the ER, but I did spend my BD there once. I got stung by a jellyfish at the beach.

Rita, tell Sherri to be careful! My oldest daughter had 17 stitches after slicing herself while falling, but that was eons ago.

I hope, Sherri will be healing fast, and won't be laid up to much by this.

The next time DH or I go to the ER, we're going to be so close to death that the funeral home hearse will be right behind us. It cost $11,000. the last time I went and that did not include the Doc. The doc's part not covered by insurance, that I paid out of pocket was $600. and I didn't see her for more than 60 seconds. Ridiculous!

Well, we're home from the folks' house for dinner. Of course, I teased Sherri endlessly but she took it in stride. I stayed to help my mom wash dishes after the meal since Sherri can't get her hand wet and my dad is still recovering from toe surgery. I keep telling them they just need to build another *wing* onto that old farmhouse for more ailing family members. :-)

Not today but FIL was rushed to the ER yesterday. They said he had a TIA and they sent him home with slurred speech, wonky eyes and walking slanted! My mom had one a while ago and didn't even see a doctor until after the fact, without any lasting effects and they kept her for two days.

Next year you'll look back and laugh. I'm one of those accident prone types. But I haven't needed to go to the ER in a long time. Last week I fell twice-once on the ice getting into my car, the second time I fell down the stairs and twisted my ankle. Just a little soreness.

Paula, those TIAs are usually pre-cursors to a full blown stroke. My mom used to get TIAs and then finally had a stroke.
