Plant I Bought....What is It?

Friend and I went to an Estate Sale yesterday and I bought this (actually it screamed TAKE ME HOME WITH YOU..lol). I've seen these, but have no idea what it is OR how to take care of it. It was outside. As you can see, it has a lot of dead stuff on it..but there's some new coming out. Do I need to remove all the dead stuff (and how do I do that)?

I have one of those! I forget what it is though! LOL! I cut off the dead stuff at the bottom.I treat mine the same as my Phylodendrums.Nice plant!

Looks like a Monstera deliciosa or split leaf philodendron, some call it windowleaf philodendron. Just clip the dead parts off close to a living stem or at the surface of the soil. It won't like direct light but likes bright light, water it when dry, like a philodendron.

Welcome to the forum if this is your first posting. Very nice layout. Your choice for water flow is borderline for a falls that high. Refer to the pump flow chart either in the directions or on the Manufacturer's website. Figure every 10 feet of hose equals 1 foot of elevation when you begin to determine how much water is actually flowing out of the falls. Always use the next size hose for better flow. Always better to think there is too much than to think, "Oh I should have gotten the bigger pump". You can always divert the flow. Elbows also decrease efficiency. For a really nice display go for a 2x capacity even 3x. It is all a matter of taste and what effect you are trying to achieve. You can trip the water rushing down the falls with a bowling ball boulder at the bottom or force the turbulance down to the bottom of the pond to keep the layers of the water column moving and mixing. Add more rocks on the falls to change the tones. You'll have massive air exchange on the falls. The water will release CO2, and gain O2, thus helping keep a balance. That's a good thing for a well planted pond and any pond for that matter. -Philip

Its an echeveria succulent plant. Common name hens-and-chicks. Mother plant is the "hen" and offsets are the "chicks". Left alone it will fill the container with rosettes. You can start offsets any time. Just pull off and stick stem in sandy-loam soil.

They are both members of the Amaranth family, so they'd look alike. I had the Alternanthera last year, and was hoping it would come back up from seed this year, like the Purple Knight alternanthera does, but no luck so far.

Don't know what its called, except at my house its a "thief". I have one about eye level with several other plants in my master bathroom. One day when I finally took the time to cut old leaves off and tidy up I noticed that it had suckers or stems that planted into other pots. It was taking its neighbors moisture and using it for itself.
Kind of shocked me to see this, maybe repotting will keep it happy and to itself for a while. It is a pretty plant.

It is a Philodenderon, bipinnatifidum. (tree philo) I believe

I hope you really love this plant, because it should live forever! I was given one 33 years ago as a housewarming gift for my first apartment. Well it has survived through being moved in winter snowstorms, and even when I went on a month long vacation one year and had no one to water it. I have a black thumb and have killed every other plant I've ever owned, but this one is indestructable. I've never even repotted it in 33 years! It loses leaves periodically and grows new ones, but the overall size is still the same. So enjoy, it should give you MANY years of pleasure!

Put it in a south-facing window; give it liquid fertilizer, like Shultz-instant, and it will grow and grow and grow. They are gorgeous.

I had one that was about 5 feet tall and spread out 9 feet wide when I was stationed in England. It complete filled my dorm window. (We had large dorm rooms and windows there!) I used the Shultz at half-strengh every time I watered it except for December and Januaray when it appeared to be resting.

philodendron selloum, common philodendron for landscapes here in fl. the leaves that are less cut up are the juvenile leaf form of the cut-leaf. there are many many varieties of philodendrons...philodendron xanadu is one of my very favorite landscape plants. ~ liz

Yeah, its a pretty plant but poisonous for cats and dogs. So if you have pets, be very cautious!

Liz is right. I have one in my yard, but I'm thinking of stealing the one at the abandoned house next DOOR, which is HUGE!

Thanks everyone!! Would it be OK to repot it now? It's in a pretty big pot..but the pot doesn't have a "saucer" under it to catch the water...and I have to have that if I'm going to keep it in the house.

Go ahead and repot it. Put it in a large pot with big holes in the bottom and a good sized saucer under it so the water can drain freely through the pot. My split-leaf philo was quite a drinker. LOL I had mine in a huge clay pot, which sat on a Pot-Jack type spacer inside the saucer. That gave the roots plenty of air.

Good drainage, south sun, keep moist, and stand back. It will take off like a bat out of Helena.
