This Plant Called My Name...So I Bought It. What IS It?lol

It was on clearance at Walmart and I thought it was pretty! I just need to know what the heck it is..and how to take care of it!*S*

Amanda; Every 4 to 6 weeks, no particular schedule involved here, I either siphon the water out or for the plants in the basket type pots, Like what you see above with the picture of the Anthurium plowmanii, I can lift the pot out and dump it. To siphon the water out I use a piece of silicone air line sold for aquarium use, with a hard plastic tube on one end, silicone is more flexible than clear vinyl tubing so I prefer it. Many pet shops sell this stuff for fixing, modifying or building tank filters. The size of the hard tubing is 3/16" to fit in the air line. I just push the hard tube through the media to the bottom of the container and start the siphon. Most of these small containers have less then a cup of water in them so they only take a few moments to empty, though a few of the larger setups I have may have more then a pint and they do take longer. A few of these containers have a larger(1/2") glass tube that extends to the bottom and I'll just slide the siphon tube down that. I use General Hydroponics Flora Nova Grow to fertilize when I refill the container and just top off the water every 4 - 7 days. Distilled if I have it, Tap water when I don't but I don't concern myself too much over which I use. Overall, I find this a very easy way to keep most of the plants I've tried with it Danny.

IMHO.. shrubs NEVER need fertilizer .... too much nitrogen.. in the NPK ... or a soil that holds the wrong type of nitrogen.. will cause long leggy greenery .. while sacrificing flowers ... e.g we put high nitro fert ... like 30-3-3 on the grass.. to make it grow fast tall and very green .... if that describes the change in the shrubs you are not appreciating.. then that might be part of the problem ... leaving stock in pots.. for extended periods will also affect them ... but i understand that sometimes life gets in the way of what should be planted timely ... sound like you are kind of new to the garden ... one thing to learn ... or a few ... only annuals require you to be in a hurry ... since they live one year.. they need food and lots of care .. there is immediate gratification ... perennials less... less food .... same water .... somewhat deferred gratification.. it might take it a year or two to get situated in your garden ... and really put out the show ... shrubs.. trees... conifers ... these things can live 100 years ... THERE IS NO IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION ... OTHER THAN THE PURCHASE ... some can take decades to begin to show off ... to their utmost potential ... especially after transplant ... i tend to agree with the nurseryman .... they were grown to their utmost perfection for sale .. and they are adjusting to your yard... be patient.... and keep them properly watered.. and back off the fert .. and they will reward you.. somewhere down the line ... i waited 7 years to get a flower off a flowering cherry ... and i complained like heck ... and it eventually came through .... good luck ken

Well, the nursery woman is partly right. The plants are grown under ideal conditions, and generally farther south, so they will be two to three weeks farther along when they are for sale than the same plant would be if it had wintered over here. The nursery I used to work at got their shrubs from North Carolina mostly. It sounds like you are supplying appropriate cultural conditions. It may take a couple of years for the plants to adjust to being transplanted and to their new environment. Also, are you in a part of the country that had drought problems last year? That can set plants back A LOT! We had a flowering almond for years, and it was covered in blooms for weeks every spring, until it succumbed to a severe drought several years back. I'm not a shrub expert, but I'm wondering about the fertilizer you are using. If it's high in nitrogen, you may be getting more leaves at the expense of flowers.

Looks interesting, for a second I thought it might actually be some sort of cristate form conifer, but I think it's actually either cactus or succulent. Maybe Crassula Argentea "Coral" Rhipsalis cereuscula

petty sure it's mistletoe cactus but there are two types, one red berried and one white. from the pic i'm not sure which you got. BTW there are not alot of plants i covet, i sell them, design w/ them and kill lots but this is one plant i want and never see for sale lol. keep it dry w/ lots of light, usually they berry-up for fall-winter ~ liz

I was also going to say Pencil Cactus... but I think Pencil Cactus is more upright...

Could be Minnie!! lol

I'm leaning toward is being the Mistletoe Cactus. I did a search for pictures of it after Liz mentioned it and the one I got looks a whole lot like the pictures. I just realized a little bit ago that is has an odor. It kind of smells like grass..or fresh cut grass.

The best way to find out what it is is to look at photos and compare them with the actual plant you have.

If it is a pencil cactus it may be poisonous to your pets. I was looking something up on a plant and ran across it. I have a really small one, not the same as yours, from a clipping.

The plant they show as a pencil cactus is also called a Crown of Thorns, which I have had. The term pencil cactus (I used to worked in a plant store many years ago) is kind of a catch all name for Euphorbias that grow in a "pencil" form. I think most of what is refered to as a Pencil cactus would be poisonous, the white sap of the plant, is very bitter tasting too so I can't really imagine that if a cat would get a very slight taste would eat any of it.

But then again, I have a cat that likes to chew on most any kind of tape, stupid cat.

Actually Dilly_Dally I DID do a search for pictures! That's why I posted and said "I'm leaning toward it being the Mistletoe Cactus. I did a search for pictures of it after Liz mentioned it".

Thanks everyone else! I'm still thinking it's a Mistletoe Cactus. I've never even heard of them. Walmart only had 2. Soxxxx..it probably would have jumped in my buggy, but I had to do some rearranging to make a place for her to sit! lol

I also asked and posted the pictures over on the Cacti & Succulents Forum. Got a couple of responses, but only thing I understood was "It's not a Pencil Cactus", then they started using the "fancy" names! lol
