What just happened? Vent about mom.

My mother is 96, healthy and independent. She still drives. She live about three miles from me. We get along well, partly because I have learned to let things roll off my back. However, just now I called her on the phone to say I was going to a store that sells all kinds of nuts, candy and baking supplies. I know she wants almond paste and dates so I called to ask if she wanted me to pick them up. She wanted a certain kind of dates so she didn't say yes or no. She mentioned she was going out to buy wine for my BIL so I asked if I could do that for her. No -- she needed to see what was there.

So then she starts to tell me that my niece (her granddaughter age 45) called to say they will be there Christmas for dinner and stay two nights. Mom told her she is making turkey for dinner and niece commented that she usually makes rib roast. Mom goes off on a rant to me on the phone about how expensive rib roast is and with turkey she has leftovers for lunch. So I said I would just go ahead with the turkey.

Well, that set her off and I can't figure out why. She says in a snippy voice, never mind I will get the almond paste and dates myself and then almost bangs the phone down in my ear. I have replayed the conversation in my mind and I can't figure out what made her mad. It seemed to be my comment that she should go ahead with the turkey and that my niece probably was only commenting, not requesting rib roast!

Now I feel bad and I can't figure out why. What did I do? My son and I help her a lot and always offer to do more, so I don't think she feels neglected. Sheesh. Thanks for listening.
