Need hints on repairing bra

I have a fairly new underwire bra that the end of the wire has broken through the bra fabric near my underarm side. This can happen frequently, and in a bra that has seen it's better days, I'll just toss it, but I haven't worn this one that much.

Any of you have a T & T repair for a job like this?

I've just pushed the wire back in and sewed the hole closed with heavy thread.

That's what I usually do too but it will likely do it again. Try wrapping the very end of the wire with a tiny piece of duck tape or something similar to help make it less sharp. I have used a little piece of foam too stuff it in the hole between the wire and fabric then sew it closed tightly.

Tmajor, A helicopter engine in an airplane? Hey, why not? The 250-20J in the Bell 206 I trained in (Navy TH-57) put out 425 shp if I remember correctly. Not bad for a little trombone. The Rolls Royce AE1107C "Liberty" turboshaft in the V-22 is basically a helicopter engine serving as a turboprop. It's not a whole lot different from the AE2100 powering the new Herc (KC-130J). Now that you've mounted one in a cessna, how about a GT? The PTO might be tricky, since they typically run directly off the engine. I think my hi-lift blades would probably lift the sod out of the ground, spinning at 30,000 rpm. Wankel, Put a tube in it. Problem solved. I recently put a 1" slice in my sidewall. New tire: $80. New tube: $20 (from JD dealer; Walmart probably sells them for half that--but made in CHINA). Of couse when I took the tire off the rim I found the previous owner had already put a tube in it (and a failed patch in the tread). Had I known that I would have just patched that one and saved $20. That tire had a rough life before even wearing the nubs off. I'll put the repaired tube in the other side eventually (if that doesn't already have one too). If you do happen to find a puncture, you can certainly use one of the plug kits sold in auto parts and hardware stores. Just pull the offender out, ream out the hole, put the plug in halfway, pull out the insertion tool (wihout pulling out the plug). No glue required. You can cut the exposed half off to as short as 1/2" but it's not necessary. Butch, I worked my way through college in a garage, mostly installing tires. Nothing used to piss us off like Fix-a-flat spraying all over your legs and chest while breaking the bead on the machine. That's just nasty stuff. If anyone ever uses it, please let the poor guy know when you get new tires. Better yet, pry off the center cap or hubcap, and write FIX-A-FLAT IN TIRE on the wheel with a black sharpie. Bushleague, That's one of the things I love about the V22. After a cursory 2min walkaround (looking for open panels, bird guts in intakes, etc) we fire up the APU, run the preflight BITs for the Flight Control System, Fuel System, Emergency Lube System, and Oxygen Generation System, which the plane does itself while we sit in the air conditioned cockpit and watch the displays. It even wiggles the flight control surfaces. Gone are the days of climbing all over helicopters. It takes pilots 30 minutes to preflight a CH-46, 40 minutes for a CH-53. That's not fun in the blazing sun, or when you're climbing on the tail of a helicopter 80' up in the air over blue water, hanging off the edge of the carrier. Speaking of people not checking their tire pressure, here's a public service announcement: If you have a compact spare (donut), check it ASAP! Those things need to be maintained at 60psi, twice your big tires' pressure. Due to the high pressure and low volume of air, they lose their pressure much more quickly than your real tires. Even an air-tight tire will lose about 3 psi per year. The compact spares are more like 5. If your car is 5 or more years old and you haven't checked your compact spare, I bet you it's half full. Even fully pressurized, it can barely hold your car's weight and can't be driven over 50mph. At half pressure, it can't hold your car's weight. I made it a habit to check customers' donuts every time I had their cars in the garage whether they asked or not. I don't think I ever found one over 30psi. Most were 15psi. That's a flat tire! Too funny, Kellie! At just 3 weeks post-op, I am still frustrated that putting on a regular bra is impossible! I can only manage the step-in stretch ones. * I part my hair on the right side and can't seem to do that either now. * Cutting anything with ANY pair of my scissors is totally impossible! * I've taught myself to write with my left hand, as it will probably be 4-5 more weeks before they pull the pins out. I'm proud to say that I can now print and write in cursive as well as any second grader! * I still clunk DH in the head and shoulders with my cast while we sleep, poor guy! *My long-time dentist would have a fit if he knew what chores I use my teeth to help me with these days. * I can't tie my shoes, button buttons or zip up my winter jacket, so I spend most days in yoga pants and sandals. Socks are a nightmare to get on! * DH has to cut much of my food and I eat like a toddler, aiming my food straight into my mouth which, I'm sure looks so strange! * My wonderful, ingeniously designed (expensive) arm cast cover works like a charm when taking a shower. I just pray all arm circulation is not permanently damaged by using it. Still, I'm staying clean and I don't stink (LOL)! * I 've learned the hard way to check if my cast will fit through a sleeve BEFORE I slip a top or sweater over my head and try to shimmy my cast through! But, it's getting a bit easier every day, so I can't complain too much. In the whole grand scheme of things, life could be a whole lot worse. I'm just glad that I can laugh at myself. Lynn

Hints for aftercare in knee replacement?
Q

I personally don't feel that your question is out of line. Your doctor/surgeon, of course, should cover everything with you, including all the post-surgery stuff. Pepper him/her with all your questions! My own experience amounted to two partial replacements done several months apart about five years ago. Yes, my surgeon asked me if I wanted them done at the same time, but I had a hard time imagining being off both legs at the same time. Each episode amounted to a couple of days in the hospital before going home. Yes, you probably will need some hefty pain-killers for awhile. I was sent home with a contraption that automatically bent and straightened the leg. After a week or two, it was physical therapy sessions, twice a week, for a couple of months. Those sessions were super-painful as the primary purpose is to attain full range of motion, both bending and straightening. I'd say that if tears do not come to your eyes, then you aren't putting as much into it as you should. Anyway, for me, the physical therapy was the hardest, but most important, phase of the whole experience. Since you are alone, your doctor should be able to inform you of services available to you that will enable you to recover properly. For the first month or so, you won't be able to drive, so you'll need assistance from a friend, neighbor, or some kind of paratransit service. There is another possibility that might come into play in your particular situation, but I'm not an authority in this area so check with your doctor. Upon your discharge from the hospital, the doctor may feel that your situation (living alone) warrants a brief stay in a rehab facility. The rehab facility would have physical therapists to help with that part of your recovery, and they would also teach you how to continue your progress at home alone. The length of your stay would be dependent on a determination by the rehab facility that you are capable enough to take care of yourself at home. Again, this part should be covered by your doctor and your medical insurance coverage also is pertinent. One more thing. My surgeon cautioned me not to engage in vigorous activities with the new knee. While I realize that medical advances and perhaps newer knee materials mean that your new knee will be much more durable than mine, most doctors five years ago were saying that you don't want to wear out or damage that replacement. Apparently, a second replacement was highly problematic. They don't last forever, and that weighs against doing knee replacements on younger patients. Again, things may have changed since then. Anyway, I was told: no running, brisk walking was okay, swimming would be great. While those cautions came as a big disappointment to me, the pain-free existence since then has been all worth it. Let me stop here and pass the ball back to you. Of course, everyone's experience and situation is different, so please consider what others say as well.

Washing Padded Bras
Q

I quit using the mesh bag when I got a front loader. Wash with my other under garments and nighties on cold water. Hang the bras and delicates to dry and put the rest of the load in the dryer. I keep a mesh bag on hand should H*** freeze over and I put on a pair of pantyhose. I don't wear lace so maybe 'delicates' is the wrong word - whatever you call comfortable camouflage for older gals. My mom used to wear long-lines that hooked up the back. That was a family production but she was a 'J' and her bras had to be handmade. Those were the ones the had to be handwashed. If you're spending good money on brassieres, you probably should use the mesh bag, I guess. I buy Bali's at Ross on sale, lol.

If it's fairly new, I would take it back. That shouldn't happen....bras are pretty expensive these days.

I've used a bit of foam over the end and then hand sewn some bias tape over the opening. That works for a while, but trust me, it is eventually going to work it's way through again.

Like the others have said, push the wire back in and sew it closed.

Could you use a very small pair of pliers and turn the end under so it would break thru again?
Never worn one, have no idea.

The 1 underwire bra I had, I took the dang wires out! I don't "get" under wires...don't see the purpose.

Another vote for bringing it back. the manufacturer should know this is a defect.

If you can't take it back, sew a couple of layers of bias tape over it. If at all possible don't even wear an underwire bra. My Dr. Says absolutely NO underwire! Worst thing I could wear.

I would take it back! Receipt or not. Most places will at least do an even exchange!

I got it online, and I'm not sure I want to go through the hassle of returning it, as I don't really remember exactly when I got it, so I'm also not sure of the exact age.

I find that the underwire bras do a much better job at staying in place, at least for me. I've always felt the non-underwire seem to be 'slipping' around on me.

Tami, I've never heard of this caution before. Please tell me more.

I can't help you with the bra, it sounds like a design flaw and I'd take it back if barely worn as you describe.

But that reminded me of a call we had when I did bookkeeping for an appliance store many years back. Long time customer called outraged late one afternoon, her brand new dryer was falling apart, she had literally found pieces of it in her load of clothes. The service man had left for the day (yes, that was back when appliances stores had their own service departments and someone to service what they sold), so the delivery man who lived near her stopped at her house on his way home to see if he could do a little PR work and calm her down at least....

What he found in her laundry, the errant dryer piece that had come loose, was actually the underwire from one of her bras ;)

maxmom, do any of your local stores sell the same brand. Same thing happened to me a few years back. No matter what I did the wire just continued to poke. Went to buy a new one and mentioned to the clerk what had happened. Guess I had bought it almost a year before. She told me to return it for a new one. I explained it was almost a year old and she said that was fine. Maybe some brands stand my their products and it would not be an issue with a return if you find the same brand. Good luck , as the price of a new bra is not cheap.

I was told this by a specialist a year ago. At that time I was too worried about the pain I had been having, with a good mammogram and ultrasounds, so wasn't thinking clearly enough to question her about it. My problem was wildly fluctuation hormones, and was told absolutely no caffeine and to take 3 evening primrose oil capsules, 1 vitamin E, and 1000 mg of vitamin C a day. It has all worked. That said, I see my local specialist, not the one who told me, and I am going to try to remember to ask him why she would tell me that. I am curious as well, and you are not the first to ask me about it. As I don't wear underwires anyway, I guess it didn't matter enough for me to think to ask. If I remember to ask him, I will let you know.

Lurker here, but just have to say that I was told that when that happens it's because the cup isn't large enough. I had a professional fitting done before my dds wedding and changed sizes significantly.

It never happened again.

I got my answer yesterday. The theory is that the undersides press against the nerve bundles where they attach to the chest wall and can cause problems with nerve damage and arthritis. Love my dr! He took extra time with me with several questions I had yesterday in addition to this one.

No useful suggestions to offer, I fear ...

..having been out of these kinds of games for over 40 years.

There's validity to the "Can't teach on old dog new tricks", I figure.
