Huh. Who knew! I know which side the tank is on in my car. DH is always asking me when we go to fill up with gas which side the gas tank is on. This fits with my car, I will have to look on his dash when I ride in the pick up next time to see if its on the left.

I also put a small self-stick dot on the rearview mirror to remind me which side the gas cap is on.

It figures!!My car just blew that theory out of the water! It's a Hyundai. Gas tank fill is on the left and the picture shows the handle on the right! Go figure!

Now that is one smart light bulb that went off in your head...Too bad it wasn't something you could sell...lol

Actually, most newer cars have a wee tiny arrow at the base of the gas gage, pointing right or left, where the fill cap is.

Execept for Beemers it seems. Gauge on the left. Tank on the right. Those darn Germans. :-)

Not always true. I've checked it out on friends' cars.

So, based on the responses, I wonder if it's true of only American models. I'd be more sure of the answer if Mikka North and LindaKathy had mentioned the makes or models they checked. I never thought to make the correlation and will look for that for now on. Thanx for the info. Hope I can see the little gas pump before it lights up. LOL

Actually I'd heard that the gauge itself was on the side of the tank. That is not always true either.
Neither is the little gas tank picture.

This addresses a pet peeve of mine. I wish automakers would get together and agree on the drivers or passengers side and put the gas cap on one or the other. It doesn't matter which one. It would take a while for the older cars to 'die off' but then we wouldn't be faced with having to turn around, back in, etc. to get to the available pump. Some time long ago it was decided that everyone had to drive on the right side of the road (in the U S, at least). To me this is the next logical step.

It is not true on my car. I looked and the little handle is on the right, but my tank is on the left. Oldsmobile Intrigue.

I just checked my Dodge Caravan. Handle on right, fuel door on left. However, there is an arrow pointing from the little gas pump to the left.

Well we just got home a little while ago....

I thought this was true also...but in my case, it is not. My Ford focus - the fuel door on the right, picture of the pump would show it on the left. Same on my husbands truck. I was dissapointed...

Oops. DH's Chevy pick-up doesn't work out either. (picture shows right, but tank is on the left) Oh well.

I wonder if there's a year cut off? Maybe this is true for newer cars, and not older ones? Still haven't checked my FJ--will next time I get into it.

What about cars that have the fill location underneath the rear license plate?

That theory doesn't work with our Toyota. The picture shows the handle on the right, but we fill on the left.

I remember seeing something about this on Ellen a few months ago ... My '99 Hyundai dosn't have an arrow of any type but DH's 2007 Toyota Hilux does! I just have to remember to tell him about it cos I doubt he's even noticed it!

Not true for my car either but it would be a good idea if maufacturers did something like this. It seems like a lot of people like the idea of an indicator on the dashboard and it certainly would be a simple thing to do at no expense to them.

Well, today I had to be in both our car, and the van. I looked. :)

2000 Honda Accord shows the pump handle on the right, but the gas tank opening is on the left.

1999 Toyota minivan shows the pump handle on the right also, and the tank opening is on the left again. BUT in this vehicle is a little arrow pointing to the left, telling also that the gas tank is on the left.

ok, it shows the handle on the right (but the tank is on the left), but there IS an arrow on the left side, pointing to the left. on min ('05 Pontiac).

Ok, had a great laugh with DH tonight, because he had passed it on to friends before he checked his truck. His Truck a 2006 GMC is NOT like the picture and my 2006 TORRNET (Pontiac) is like the picture.

REALLY with out the little arrows, you would think that if light it is a gas PUMP that you are pulling up too and it shows the GAS PUMP NOZZLE on the left, your tank should be on the RIGHT! (Or vise versa)

EITHER WAY DO I EVER FEEL BAD.... cause I did think it was such a good idea! and now not so good.... :o(

I am hanging my head in shame, life lesson, if it seems too easy then it probably is!!

This next poster says it all

Checked my car (FJ Cruiser)--the nozzle is on the wrong side in the picture, BUT there's a little arrow next to the image of the gas pump that points to the side of the car. So guess it's still worth checking if you're in an unfamiliar car--might be some sort of indication on the dash.
