It looks like the textured coating would be harder to clean than the concrete floor. My friend had something put on hers and she hates.

hmmm...Without getting into a lot of expense, might a piece of (used if you can locate any) carpet with a rug gripper mat (or two) beneath it work?

We don't have that problem as of now the only thing that is parked in the garage is my golf cart. I just had it out though the melting snow and no problems getting it in. No slope to go up though. I do have a big rubber mat I am going to put in the garage to park it on. The men have stacked lumber on it right now! Hope you find a solution for your problem.

Check with a cement company or a big store like Menards or Lowes to see if they have something you could spray on the concrete. I do remember seeing something either on DYI or another improvement program. Rugs could be dangerous. Or check to change the approch like mini ramps with a sandpaper type coating.
Hope others have better ideas.

How about a piece of heavy duty cardboard? Not sure that would work though. I'd look at something more temporary than permanent but I don't know what that might be.

We've used green or gray indoor/outdoor carpeting in our garage for the last 30 years. We've replaced it twice in that time. Even though our weather isn't as severe as yours might be, the carpet does get quite wet when it rains heavy because our atrium which is accessible from the garage always floods into the garage. No big deal. It dries without any smell or problems. I bet it would be fine with snowy tires and it's a fraction of the cost of epoxy floors. We have priced those a number of times, each time shaking our heads at the cost. I've read many times the home do it yourself version does not hold up well.

You might want to try roof shingles laid down in 2 strips where the tires drive. I know they work when nailed down on decks and steps to help with slipping. If your floor is cement you could lay a bit of rubber rug mat under it so it wouldn't move.

I think your problem is the snow buildup in the tread of the tires coupled with snow/slush on the floor itself. You'll have that trouble with anything underneath. I can't quite envision how your garage is set up so it hinders the thought process. However one thought would be some of the anti-slip stuff that you put on ladder steps, steps and the like. Put it down with the adhesive and maybe that would help. Cardboard on slippery surfaces is very slippery so that wouldn't help. Anyone who's tried using cardboard under the tires when they're stuck knows how it shoots out! We used to use cardboard for a sled to slide down hills when I was a kid. Boy you'd go fast!

My other thought for a temporary solution would be some of that non-slip shelf liner. I put that on my wood steps when a friend's Standard Poodle stayed with me. She'd slip and slide on the steps but with the shelf liner it was like a runner. I think I'd use the type with the holes in it. You can get that in a wide measure and it wouldn't be expensive to try if it doesn't work.

We have the textured epoxy coating on our garage floor and the floor is even more slippery when wet.

I fell a few weeks ago in the garage when I hit a little bit of snow on the floor and landed flat on my face.

If I had my way I would get rid of the floor but that won't be happening anytime soon.

Thanks all. I won't be going anywhere for awhile because of the 20" of snow we received yesterday. But I did spend some of my couped up time researching the matter on line. It does look like the epxoy coating doesn't work well--lots of complaints about it. At least for this winter, I think I'm going to buy some heavy duty rubber mats, the kind meant for outside, and lay a couple right near the garage door on the inside so the front tires have something to "grasp" to heave the car up the little bump into the garage. Sears sells them--by a manufacturer called Rubber-cal. I put an inquiry into the company as to what they'd recommend. Once summer comes, I'll try to think of a more permanent solution, if possible.

glad you found something! know few people around here have installed heating coils under the cement, but can't imagine what thay does to the electric bill!

Marita, When we lived in St. Paul, we had the same problem as you describe. We tried cardboard, shingles, other rough surfaced items...all were a waste of time.

The ONLY thing that worked was to shovel outside the garage, say, say for 3-4 ft. That way, when we approached the garage, we'd have a clear surface for the final approach. From your snow photos, it looks like your approach is through an alley? If that's correct, yes you will be shoveling the alley and have to figure out where to pile the white stuff. However, that tip worked for us and it's a trick that moved with us to our Chicago home.

We kept multiple snow shovels around our home, one definitely was right inside the garage. We didn't have a snow blower.

Your snow pictures on the other thread are pretty...and I'm glad it was you taking them, and not me any more!

BTW, you are using ice melt or something aren't you? Another thought is to build up a little "ramp" of sand so it's not such a bump. Then come spring or summer build it up with blacktop patch.

Thanks everyone. It is a hard situation to visualize, I know. I'd take a picture but we are still buried in snow around here (I'll be taking the bus to work today!). Yes, patser, the garage is in the alley and the right hand turn into it is very, very tight. The complication is that the garage, too, is tiny--one small car fits only. So when the front tires don't grab the slick concrete, the front of the car slips to the right and I run the danger of cracking the side against the garage door. I did this last year and broke the passenger side mirror. It is a bad situation all around in winter. After the alley plow goes through, I do shovel out a few feet in front of the garage but the real killer is not snow but ice which inevitably begins to form. And yes I am using a lot of ice melt and kitty litter. . .

I think I understand what you have now. I will say that blacktop patch would give you good traction and have other benefits. First, being black it'd absorb the sun, heat up so on a nice day it should melt, solving part of the problem. It's a rough texture so that would help. It's cheap, about $5 for a 40# bag (you'd probably need several bags). And it'd make a slope instead of the bump. I used it to build up in front of my garage skirt and my sister used it to build up her driveway next to the house to slope it away from the foundation. But you'd need it fairly clean and dry so you'd need a reasonably nice an sunny day and keep the patch in the house until you use it. You could warm things up with a salamander heater and a couple heavy tarps. That should bring the temp up enough to get a patch on. It probably wouldn't be very permanent but it might help you get through the winter. Looks like we're having an old fashioned one this year! Oh, and you could mix in some pea rock or something too. Even some larger stuff to make a rougher surface. Don't hesitate to overlap it onto the garage skirt if you wanted although if you wanted to take it off later, it might not be easy. Hope you find a solution! Permanent or temporary!
