alisande~Question on hooked rugs

I have seen your posts regarding the rug hooking that you have done, they are all very lovely.

I have inherited several small rugs done by my grandmother and great-grandmother. Some are backed on burlap (not holding up so well) and others on muslin(?). All of the rugs were made of new fibers, not recycled materials so far as I can tell.

I'd really like to wall hang one that has a damaged spot on the backing, but am not sure how to support it properly. It is about 4 foot X 6 foot. I thought about building a frame, but am thinking that it would be better to support the entire surface, not just the edges.

Also, there has been some disagreement on how to clean them. Gramps says that all he would do it rub it with snow in the winter. My aunt tried to wash one, and the red tones bled.

Any info would be great.

Thanks so much
