What baking have you done so far for xmas?

I've been making cookie dough at night and freezing the stuff for a major bake day.

Cookies: sugar (2 nights), mocha chocolate

Baked: chewy noels, lemon bars

Today: molasses cookies

Shopping: done

I hate digging out addresses to do the cards, so I bought next years cards on sale and have address all the envelopes now - they are going in my dresser drawer so I know where they are next year.

So far, DD and I made 3 batches of cookie dough for the freezer for her Christmas gifts for co-workers. I baked some gingerbread boys over the weekend.

But really, given the holiday season we're having, I doubt I'll be doing much baking for myself this year. Just too much to do with my mom's funeral, clearing out her apt., handling the financial stuff, and over all--the sadness of losing her this time of year.

Not a single thing. I'm only going to bake two pies for Christmas desert: coconut cream and chocolate cream. DH buys the pumpkin pie. I find we don't eat a lot of sweets at Christmas time, everyone saves space for dinner. LOL So it just goes to waste.

I learned something this season that I knew was coming down the pike but didn't know when, now I know when. For the first time in my gardening history I'll have to stop expanding the garden and start to shrink it next year. I've reached my upper limit on what I can successfully maintain and due to slowing down myself so goes the garden. Missing from next year's planting list will be Onions, Cantaloupes, and perhaps Butter beans. I'll still grow watermelons but on a smaller plot with smaller melon varieties, I just can't pick up those Big ones trying to tippy toe through vines without twisting my ankle or getting a hernia, ha. Will hold onto planting the main staples of the veggie world....as long as possible :)

I was making an order and came up with the dreaded "won't ship to Alaska" sign...I get so frustrated with that. But on the bright side, I went seed shopping locally yesterday, and got most of the seeds I wanted cheaper, anyway. My favorite place to buy seeds locally sells Seeds of Change, Renee's Garden, and Johnny's Seeds at a discount, plus buy 4 get 1 free. AND they didn't have one of the tomatoes I wanted; fortunately they had just put in an order to Renee's Garden, so picked up the phone while I was there and had it added to their order. Now that is service! For anyone reading this in the Anchorage/Valley area, if you haven't checked out Far North Garden Supply for those hard to find seeds, you might try them. I'm trying growing artichokes from seed this year. I grew them a couple of years ago, but someone else had started the plants and done the difficult work. I hope the ones I start do as well as those did. I also found cayenne pepper seeds yesterday...there are lots of pepper seeds around, but I haven't found cayenne for a couple of years. It's one of my favorite peppers for drying and adding to anything and everything I cook!

Chandra, It sounds like you're off to a great start already. Jay, I was hoping you would address NM's mountains and valleys as well as your experiences growing there in terms of planting times. Heather, Hope you have fun planting your onions. Nothing makes it feel like spring is on the way more than planting something in the ground! I'm glad you currently don't see any major cold spells lurking on the models. I am so ready to get stuff planted into the ground, but have lots of frost blanket row covers if the weather throws some surprisingly cold nights at us. Carol, My new 'go to' broccoli, other than Packman, is Piricicaba. It does not form big heads. It forms smallish-to-medium sized main heads, but forms side shoots endlessly. It grows more like a typical sprouting broccoli than the ones bred to form large main heads. Last year's broccoli survived until a frost got it in either late December 2011 or early January 2012, and that means it survived on nothing but rainfall (and precious little of it) after July when I stopped watering the garden until consistent rainfall arrived in September. Any broccoli variety that could survive the summer of 2011 and still be producing in the fall and winter is well worth growing. I originally purchased Piricicaba seed from Bountiful Gardens because they said it survived and produced even when temperatures were in the 90s. It performed even better in our heat than I expected. I have been moderately happy with Di Cico when I have grown it, but it hasn't produced as well for me as Packman does. I also like Small Miracle because I can cram a lot of those into rows with tight spacing, but Piricicaba produces better/longer than Small Miracle so has replaced it. For fall I want to plant one of the purple sprouting broccoli varieties that overwinters, but I'll put it in the greenhouse. I have had a hard time getting any fall gardening done the last two years because of drought/wildfire, and am hoping for a kinder, gentler summer in 2012 so I can have a good fall garden like I did in 2009. I'd really been wondering when the redbuds would show that first blush of color and finally .... just in the last day or two, they are showing up along the roadsides. A deer visited a few days ago and snacked on some of my tulips :( but the ones that are left are beginning to bloom and they are beautiful! Phlox is now blooming and the hostas are growing fast. I'm now pretty sure that the tree that I thought might be a crabapple is just that, and it looks like another small tree is a redbud (yay). It's fun discovering what's growing here, now that the weather has finally decided to warm up. A neighbor said 12 wild turkeys were in our yard the other day, but we were at work so we missed seeing them. The street we live on is called Turkey Run Drive, so now we now how it got its name :). Oh, and one bit of good news .... they started the dirt work where the building will go, and when they stripped off the bermuda grass the land is mostly nice dirt, with only one little strip of red clay running through it. This may have once been farmland, or a pasture. So that's good news for the vegetable garden. Suzie

I don't do alot of baking for the holidays. I always make pralines to give as gifts and keep some for here at the house. I thought about not making them but I would have the masses banging down my door ready to kill me if they didn't get these every year.

I will make a chocolate cream pie for Christmas and will probably let Mrs. Smith bake my DH his favorite apple pie.

I've made 2 batches, which are in the freezer (Italian Anise knots and creamcheese foldover dough). Have plans to do 2 different bar cookies (almond shortbread and raspberry hazelnut). Will buy Trader Joe's Candy Cane chocolate cookies.

This year, it's half of what I usually bake, but that is because I was left with too many sweets in the house last year!

The only thing I have baked is banana bread. I put 4 loaves in the freezer yesterday. I have a big list to get to too! I gotta hit hard in the next week.
Presents are done and wrapped, one card left to mail as soon as I sit down and write in it, one package that will be sent next week, still have to buy it, but that will be done this wkend.
But no food shopping or deep cleaning done yet at all!

I have only done the skillet cookies so far, and we have eaten half of them! DD#4 and a friend were here last Sunday to make her wonderful chocolate covered cherries. I hid them from myself!

I haven't done any yet, but bought the makings for turnovers yesterday. We live in and APT and our neighbors do so much to help us thru the year, so I usually bake sweet bread or cookies to give them every so often I thought for someting diffrent, I would make apple & blueberry turnovers to give them for Christmas.

I like my stuff super fresh so I do it this way: I make my butter and mince meat tarts and freeze them before baking. Then I get them out of the pans and put them in containers so that I just have to bake them when I want them. I do the same with pecan pie...you would never know it's been frozen. With cookies, I drop them on wax paper and freeze, or roll out the sugar cookies and freeze. Again, I bake when I'm ready for them.

I haven't started yet this year, but I will be getting at it this weekend.

So far I haven't baked any thing.

I will for sure make Wedding Cakes and Spritz. A couple more after I look through my recipes and decide which ones to make.

Susan, if you check back in here, I have a question about freezing your pecan pies. I'm thinking you pour the filling into the crust and freeze it; not freeze just the filling, right? Sounds like a great idea. Think I will try that. Thanks for the idea.

You've got to be kidding me...I have to bake too??? OHHHHH PALEEASEEEE...this might send me over the deep end...LOL..just kidding McPeg...I usually bake every year...use to go thru about 40 or 50 pounds of sugar every year...but cut it way down when I found out people didn't appreciate it as much as I thought they would...Now I make Monkey Bread for my surrounding neighbors and some quickie stuff...

Alright Phyllis - please explain what skillet cookies are? Never heard of these babies.
Glad to see I'm not alone in this seasonal activity. And yes, not everyone appreciates this stuff but I know the crowd I give to has kids and parents both work with little time to bake - so I can let loose at this time of year and bake to my hearts content!

Sue, yes, I pour the filling into the crust and freeze it like that. I can have a fresh pie on Christmas morning without any trouble at all.

I have made up two batches of sambucca cookies so far, one for my co-woker's birthday (she requests them every year) and the other for my daughters office party. I usually go to a cookie walk, but haven't this year, so that sums up my X-mas baking for the year.

I don't do any holiday baking..just one pie for us for Christmas. But the candy factory is up and running. DH made a list of the people he wants to gift..nineteen so far (mostly business friends and acquaintances. They'll get peanut brittle, walnut butter toffee, spiced nuts and/or peanut butter fudge.
