This should never have happened!!!

We in the State of Massachusetts are mourning the death of a veteran Woburn police officer .His killer was a PAROLED convicted 3 life term sentence convict.

How do we get over senseless killings like this? He was doing his job when called to a robbery at a Kohls Dept. store on snowy sunday night.

It just makes you feel so hopeless . What do we ,as cititzens, do when and unnecessary crime like this has been committed?

I am so sorry, as an Aunt to two nephews who are police officers, I realize what a dangerous they have. It is the stupid courts, judges and lawyers who let the lawless jerks out time and time again.

I read about that yesterday, he was just months from retiring. Totally senseless and I don't understand parole boards that grant parole to career criminals. They need to fill those boards with less gullible people, maybe a few victims need to sit on those boards. I bet they wouldn't be so easy to fool.

I guess out of sight out of mind for some people, but don't you realize all that hair, pet dander and dirt is still there, trapped in your carpet! Especially those of us with babies crawling around on it! EWWWW. Not to mention how bad it is for people with allergies or asthma! Don't hate your floors, they are keeping you healthier and cleaner. I have a long haired dog, a long haired cat, 3 long haired daughters LOL(seriously, their hair used to clog my vaccum when I had carpeting!) and fluff balls floating every so often. The hardwood floors are sooo much easier! To keep it simple and quick, I keep the pets brushed (furminator is great, but our vet suggests using only once or twice monthly so as to not "over thin" the coat) and use a big WIDE dust mop (bought it at Lowes, Home depot has them too). My house is quite large and it only takes about 15 mins. to "mop-up" all the hair and dander in the morning. Once a day is usually good. And every day I think how if I had carpet at least 1/2 that "stuff" would still be lurking in the fibers! Also keep in mind how much easier and cleaner it is when your pets (or children) have accidents of any kind!

We can afford our house now since we redesigned and cut some good square footage now that we are with a different builder...its just frustrating having to pay all those fees all over again and they don't help us continue to pay down the actual cost of the house. The $400 is the only figure he has told us thus far. The cost of our house is going up $20K which is pennies for some based on the cost of living, but that isn't for us. Loan officer originally said we had to have a certain percentage of the cost of the house down for the interim construction loan and we have worked hard to cover that but also have continued to put extra money down "just in case." I guess I thought that would be enough wiggle room. We'll just have to hope it isn't too much more! Sometimes I have to remind myself that as frustrating as this whole process has been, he is healthy as am I, we have a (rental) roof over our head because we were able to sell our old house, and our happy in our careers. If possible, have a "LATCH" or "ISOFIX" connector installed in your car (possible on some late model vehicles, and standard equipment on many new cars) and use a recently built baby seat. These are very easy to install properly - they just snap right in - and it is easy to remove and replace them when necessary. Some cars and vans even have built-in child seats available that fold down for kids, fold back up for adults. I'm a bit disturbed at the campaign in recent years to only place children in back seats. Of course, rear-facing infant seats should *never* be placed in a front seat with an active airbag, as the bag would inflate into the top of the baby's head first. But using a forward-facing seat for post-infant younger children in a front seat may not be any less safe than in back, and may in some cases be safer. The kids-in-the-backseat campaign has been waged in recent years for reasons partly cultural, partly political. The cultural aspect pertains to parents' and society's general predilection to put kids in the back seat both metaphorically and literally. Based on past statistics, both children and adults are (slightly) better protected in the back seat. But there haven't been any efforts to get people to put their wives or husbands in the back seat for safety. The political aspect pertains to the rash of airbag-related fatalities several years ago, many to children or shorter adults. The government's airbag mandate had always had its detractors, and now there were choruses of "I told you so's" amongst those who opposed mandatory airbag requirements. To help quell the criticism and repel efforts to repeal the airbag mandates, the government began the "put kids in the back" crusade, which was picked up by car manufacturers and just about everyone else. Most of those injured or killed by airbags though were not wearing seatbelts or were in rear-facing seats. What those statistics from past accidents in older cars don't take into account is that many new cars will probably protect post-infant children and adults alike better, or at least as well, in the front seat. The advantage of the back seat was largely due to being further from the impact area in frontal collisions, which would often intrude on the passenger space in front but not in back. (Also, center positions offer better protection from side impacts from either direction than outer positions, and more cars have center-rear than center-front seating, although using the center position is often impossible if you have more than one child seat.) But due to safety advances in new cars, many cars have recently passed the government or insurance institute frontal crash tests with no intrusion into the passenger compartment. This means the front and rear seats experience exactly the same rate of deceleration, and common concerns such as crashing into the dashboard or windshield aren't an issue. Airbags have been redesigned to inflate less forcefully, especially in low-speed collisions. What's more, several new cars are equipped with seat-belt retractors (that automatically tighten to eliminate slack during a collision) and side airbags (which are safely positioned for both children and adults), whereas these features are less commonly found in rear seats. So the front seat may actually be safer in some new cars. And the front-passenger seat height and shoulder-belt height adjustments found in some new cars can better position a small child properly in respect to the seat belt and airbag. BTW, I spent two years working for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and am a lifelong car buff. And I'm not the only one reconsidering the "put kids in back" mantra. Hi Finedreams, Do you think the responsibility should lie with legislature or with the boy's parents? I'm so torn on this. 1. I feel that no child should be around semi-automatic weapons. But 2. my parents were around shotguns, etc. their entire lives and none of their friends or family ever were injured from those guns. What changed? I'm really puzzled.

From what I understand, this is the first Woburn police officer to ever be killed in the line of duty. And he was a short time from retirement (a year, I think).

Sorry - I was typing as Flamingo was posting. Didn't mean to duplicate her info about retirement (Yes, I think you're right ... months).

Another thing - the guy who was waiting for the criminals outside the store, was assigned only $1,000 bail. Although he didn't pull the trigger, I think he should be held for as much as the killer.

The 3rd criminal was killed. Not sure which one killed the police officer.

That is such a shame.

What really bugs me is when they send some of those known to be dangerous people out, because of over-crowding in the prisons. I say, cram them in if it takes 2 to a bed!

People like that is what capital punishment is for. I wish they would use it. That would also take care of the over-crowding.

I just found this bit of information out...when the Parole Board made their decision to release, they are required to notify the Distric Attorneys office so they can voice their objection or support. Had this been done..the DA's would have strongly urged No on the parole. They did this 3 years prior in 2005 when he was before the Parole Board and their objections ruled.

Not totally sure what we can do about this particular instance, but we *can* get involved in crime prevention. The general populace are so important. Cops can't do everything on their own! I wish people would learn that. We have to step forward when something happens. Not cringe and say "I don't want to get involved". Watch your neighbors places and have them watch yours. Look out for each other. There isn't and never will be a cop on every corner. As Red Green says so apropos: "We're all in this together".

A little poetic justice: Son & wife lived in a not-so-nice mobile home. After going back to collage and getting degrees, they were able to buy a nice house and land. The old trailer sat empty and one day one of the neighbors noticed a strange car parked there. He called son and asked if he knew if someone was supposed to be there and son said no. So the neighbor, who was a highway patrol officer, called for backup and they raided the place. The guys in there were in the process of setting up a meth lab. The ironic part of the story (to me, and funny) is on the dead end road where the trailer sat, lived not only the highway patrol guy, but a town police officer and a sheriff. I've wondered if the dumb jerks luck has always been that bad. LOL

Cops can't do everything on their own! "We're all in this together". Definitely

We are not our brothers keepers. I am my brothers, neighbors and helpless folks guardian but never keeper. I do and always will watch out for dirty doings, and get involved in protecting anyone from miscreants intent on nefarious pursuits. I'm an active member of Neighborhood Watch.

I also believe in life with no parole sentences and the death penalty in some cases.

That is horrible! I saw a bumper sticker just today that I totally agree with... it said "catch and release is for fish, not felons."

My heart felt sympathy goes out to this man's family. Prisons need overhauled big time. I can give them some pointers if they need some.
