The average person looking at a wing cross-section would think it pushed down, not lifts up. Common sense would fail them there. And not wanting to be disagreeable, but I think common experience (emperical results), not common sense, guides most good gardening. We often don't know specifically why something works, at least in any rigorous sense, but we know what has worked reliably for others and ourselves. Reasonable, common sense solutions can sometimes lead us astray. Common sense might easily have all our pear pruning in the dormant season (as with most other deciduous fruits): practical experience shows that some summer pruning is often more effective. Common sense had us removing lawn clippings from the lawn ("leads to thatch buildup"): actualy experience (experiment) shows that leaving them is best apparently and has nothing to do with thatch. It is often hard to figure out when to defer to authority (whether university or neighbor) and when to go with the gut, with common sense. Fortunately in gardening, experimenting and failing occasionally has little risk.

Hi Stacy...so good to hear from you.... When I've "know" someone on here for over about 14 years...I really "miss" them when they disappear from my cyber life. It's like really missing someone I know and miss in real life. We've been through a lot with you. The burning of your house was one...I remember a lot of us sent you Christmas decorations to start over with. When you got your new house built. When you decided to end the first marriage and rekindled old love with "B" And all the ups and downs with your kids. I don't think you guys are getting the problem here. Matching isn't the issue! As much as I've ranted over it. I've found 10 colors that I absolutely love and are perfect. Until .... I get them home in the natural light. THEN, they turn turquoise, teal, or any way a green can blue. It's the light. I can't take that to any store I know of and have them match it. I've taken 10 paint chips to the store which they've made perfectly. Bring it home? Blueish in some lights. Ick. As far as the sheen, I like it in this instance. It's woodwork and the dining room can be somewhat darkened because of the porch outside. I understand the issues with a glossier paint. For being pissed? I was annoyed that yet again I was finding I was given the lip service "no" without someone actually taking the initiative to figure out the possibilities. So many can't think on their own. "No" is a good answer when "no" is the only answer. Even then, there are options. When my paint man actually looked up the formula, the high gloss was a base option. It wasn't a question of an inferior product. I am very open to information as to the whys of something. Automatic nay-sayers piss me off. I lived with one, who addressed every idea with, "The problem with that is...." rather than, "hmmm.. let's see what we can do." I choose to face all this crap I deal with optimistically, believe it or not. Or I'd probably kill myself. Or them. Even my Multi-Purpose Man has quit saying no. He asks, "Tell me how you see it?" BTW. So far, in the lights of two days, the color remains.... [drum roll] PERFECT!!! Thank you. [bowing left and right]

When we go back we will take the good camera, hopefully it can capture more of the colors than the iPad. With the light hitting the stone it really did a number on the colors captured. You can see some of the browns in the top picture from their website if you look near the white spots. Some of the medium grey is that mossy sage green color. I know the granite guy had said a natural cherry or just about any brown would look lovely (I had already told him we aren't doing painted cabs). I admit I wasn't prepared for finding a stone, I may well have just been carried away and not noticed enough detail in the coloring. It really was spectacular in person! I am very much looking forward to taking some doors back up there, hopefully next week. I appreciate the feedback, I will go with an open mind. I didn't have much of a color scheme in mind, other than I wanted medium to dark cabinets. DH wanted dark floors, dark cabinets, dark granite. I was not a fan of the really dark granites he wanted, but this one is dark enough for him, not predominately brown (he does not like brown), and I really love all the colors. So we will work backwards from there!
