When quality and service go downhill

I've been in retail off and on for more years than I care to remember at times. I understand that costs go up so prices have to go up or expenses have to go down. I understand the shrinking size of a candy bar, the dish soap going down an ounce or two at a time and using a cheaper container.

After having a couple trips to the hospital in the past few weeks and various other things, to make a long story short the doctor said I needed to eat more and drink more. (THANKS DOC!!!) But, also without making a long story, I don't do much cooking at home the last few months. So it's out I go. And here is where the story of deterioration begins.

A classic example was at a local restaurant today. OK, technically it was yesterday. Big deal. Anyway. There's a national restaurant I won't name in the area and for years now it has been great. Unusual actually since most of the others I don't like but this one is a franchise and has had excellent food, excellent service and maintained it for so long. But the last few times I've been there, it's gone downhill. I think the ownership changed hands. Longtime employees are no longer there. The food, I must say, has stayed pretty good, though portions are shrinking. But service is the issue. Last time I was there, my order sat at the window for nearly 10 minutes before it was brought out. Then it was wrong. Usually I don't say anything but this time ticked me off. So I sent it back and follow up service wasn't much better though the food was OK.

Today was interesting. Often places are short-staffed which can explain some poor service. However there were way more than the usual number of employees on hand, but none of them were doing anything. No, they weren't on break. They were standing around talking to customers who were apparently friends. That's fine, to a point. But I do like more than one cup of coffee with a meal. I do like to have someone check to see if there's anything I need at least once or twice during a meal. I have certain criteria I use for judging sercice and that will affect their tip. Needless to say, they failed. I don't know how many mroe chances they'll get. I think I'll stick with the other local restaurants. They're farther away, but their standards haven't diminished.

It's really sad to see these businesses go like this. At this rate, I might as well hit a drive-thru! And that is REALLY sad!
