What do you do for dog's BAD Breath?

My friend has a very sweet Cocker Spaniel she keeps in the house but this beautiful animal's breath will nearly knock ya' over! Her vet says cleaning her teeth requires anesthesia & is costly, so I decided to ask here 'cause y'all always have the best answers on any subject!

Is there something she could feed Miss Lola?

I think a trip to the doggy dentist is in order. Could be a bad cavity or gum disease.

I have installed an extra water connection in my garage, that's not that hard to to. I don't know what you mean by care. I just turn on the tap and it starts slowly dropping water in a plastic barrel, it does about 10 litres in three hours, if it overflows when I forget its filling it overflows in the sink so no problem. As long as you don't disconnect it you dont' need to flush the system. We have very hard water here (Dh10, Kh5 Ph8.5) that I can't use for my terrarium, so my broms are lucky. Sander

Try this: (cut and paste from the Recipe forum) Slow Roasted Tomatoes 20 Roma type tomatoes (same size tomatoes are best if your garden cooperates) 2 T olive oil, plus a little to oil the pan if you don't have a mister 1 T ground fennel 2 T dried basil 1 T dried oregano 1 T dried majoram (Any combination of herbs that appeals to you can be used.) Preheat oven to 250 F (about 9 hours roasting time) or 200 F (10-11 hours roasting time.) I used the shorter time, but mainly because my antique oven will not stay at 200 F. Wash tomatoes, dry, and cut each tomato in half lengthwise, keeping the stem spot in one piece (to grab when peeling the tomatoes later.) Put tomatoes in a bowl and toss with olive oil and herbs. Spray cookie sheet with olive oil mister (or brush very lightly with oil). Arrange tomatoes cut-side down on cookie sheet. After about 8 hours, start checking tomatoes. They're done when skins puff up and tomatoes are reduced in size by at least half. It's a personal preference as to how dried you like them, and I prefer to cook mine until they look fairly dense, but still a tiny bit juicy. These tomatoes have an intense tomato flavor that you probably can't get any other way. They can be eaten hot or cold. They freeze wonderfully to use all winter in soups, stews, and pasta sauces. Personally, I wouldn't add the fennel, and I would probably use either oregano OR basil, but not both. But that's just me.

What do you do when your dog has a fever...

To really know if she has a fever, you need to take her temperature. Their normal temp is about 101 degrees. Dogs noses can be dry and warm for many reasons. When you put the therometer in, don't insert it in any more than 1 inch. My vet told me I could get a good reading, if the dog was still by putting it in between 1/2 and 3/4 of an inch.

I have 5 cats, all unrelated. For some time now, I've noticed that one of them has had increasingly bad breath. I finally had her checked by a vet. Turns out she has gingivitis and resorption. She just (1.5 weeks ago) had her teeth cleaned and 3 extracted. Bad breath problem solved. Unfortunately, the resorption (spl?) is a disease that will most likely recur. According to the vet, she just has bad teeth genes, so I'll have to take extra care with her and now brush her teeth and keep a close eye on her. I feel so bad that she was in pain for so long, the poor little thing. Cats just do not show pain. Besides the bad breath, there were other signs, like that she preferred soft food, had red gums, etc. So the vet bill was over $1,000. I know! That's what I said!!! Thankfully, I was able to pay it right now. My sister, who does cat rescue, had a cat with the same issues and her cat also had 3 teeth extracted. She has a vet that she loves and obviously uses a lot. Her vet charged her less than a third of what I paid. So the moral of that story is check around, but do get references and/or referrals.

Can't/shouldn't try to mask doggie death breath!
Definitely she needs to get her dog's teeth cleaned.
It is costly, but so are the consequences of rotten teeth and periodontal disease.

My daughter brushes the dogs teeth often. But no matter what, Cookie has the worst doggy breath for such a tiny dog. ;)

My dog always has stinky breath, I hate it when she licks me. I have spent thousands, yes thousands, on dental cleanings. Theyt don't help. There's no food or bisquit that does any good.

My Shih Tzu, Farley, is four and just had his first cleaning this past Monday. At his grooming, they said his gums were red and his teeth were dirty. He's had bad breath for a long time, but they were surprised that his teeth and gums were in such bad shape for a young dog.

They had to pull 2 lower incisors because the roots were rotten and said he has gingivitis. He got an antibiotic shot and I give him some orally twice a day until it's gone. Hopefully, when the bacteria is gone, his breath will smell better. He may need a cleaning every 6 months for awhile. Here in the sticks, it cost $60 for the cleaning, $6 for the extractions and $10.50 for the bottle of antibiotic.
They said to give him rawhide chews. They also have some at the vets that have chlorophyll? (chloro-something) in them that help with bad breath.
It's true that if the dog's teeth need cleaning and it isn't done, it can affect the whole well-being of the dog, just like in people. The bacteria affects the heart, blood and eventually other organs.

My dog also has bad breath. We've had them cleaned once and it really did help, but within six months the plaque was back. The vet said they do have special food that contains an enzyme to help dissolve plaque. Millie didn't especially like the food, but it may be worth asking the vet about.

My vet gave me a bag of dental food, but ny dog refused to eat it. They were big round, hard balls.

I've been putting these drops in my dog's food for the past couple months (when I remember), I think it has helped somewhat so I'm going to continue with it. There is also a liquid you can add to the pet's water - I am even worse about remembering to use that.

I have a Chihuahua and brush her teeth a few times a week.She doesnt mind at all, and her breath is not real bad,,,just a little doggy,lol!

I notice dog breath more when the dog eats meat rather than just kibbles.

Oh, Lydia1959's post reminded me that I put "BreathaLyser" in Farley's water (most of the time). I got it at the vets.

Many things can cause bad breath in animals and sometimes blood work is in order, liver and kidney disease being 2 of the things.

Dentals are pricey for pets, but are really necessary sometimes. We've had Paisley done several times now.
