Did you Christmas shop on line more than ever?

I sure shopped more online this year than ever. I get tired of all the trotting to stores only to find they do not have what I want. I even check the store online, they say it is in stock in the stores--NOT. I do prefer giving my business to local merchants, but I can do only so much running from store to store.

Here is what I bought online this year for my family of 10--

crock pot, All Clad frying pan and lid, hard to find dress shirt size, toy Bilbo, yarn, spining equipment, iced tea spoons, and probably a few more things I have forgotten about.

I am still waiting on two deliveries.

Yes I did shop on line probably about as much as I did last year.The parking and traffic is what drives me to shop online.

Yes I did! :) And I would've done more if I would've started earlier. Had to go to the mall (shuddering just thinking about it) Saturday night to finish. I was afraid if I ordered on line, they wouldn't get here in time.

I think in the PNW multiflora rootstock does very well, so you can buy from Pickering and Palatine. I wanted to recommend you to check out Lynette, The Oldrosarian's website. She has a PNW garden with 6-800 roses to die for, with gorgeous photos and useful comments about every rose she grew. Alas, I cannot locate the website any more. Anyway, she gardens in British Columbia, and as far as I remember, she bought roses only grafted on multiflora and laxa. Dr. Huey is the rootstock for the alkaline soils in southern California and Arizona but you probably do not have alkaline soil in the rainy Seattle. As others already explained it, David Austin sells the right to certain nurseries to grow his roses. Some sell his roses own root, like Chamblee's, Heirloom, Vintage, RU, and some sells them grafted - for you the best choice is Pickering who has most of the Austins and their multiflora rootstock is grown from seeds so it is likely virus free. (So far I never got a virused rose from them - Austin or else). Own root, as others already explained you, does not mean that the rose will be virus free. Roses Unlimited announced a few years ago that they will clean up they virused inventory but that could not be done in such a short period of time considering the large variety they carry. There is a nursery on the west coast that guarantees (?) virus-free roses, Roses of Yesterday and Today if you want grafted plants and don't want to order from Canada, though Pickering is less expensive. And, Roses Y&T has very few plants grafted on multiflora but states that they sell only virus free plants. If you are willing to try bands, you have more choices: Northland Rosarium (WA), Heirloom (OR), Vintage (CA). I tried both Northland and Vintage and I was very happy with both though I was very reluctant to try bands. For bigger own roots you can check out Rouge Valley roses (OR)- they do not state that all their roses are virus free but accept the responsibility that no matter how many years later virus shows up they will reimburse you - so far this is the best guarantee I've read. Their selection is fantastic (unfortunately their shipping cost to the east coast is forbidding but for you it should be pretty good, I assume). Chamblee's (TX) has excellent 1 and 2 gallon own root roses, including some Austins, probably at the best price you can find. Their so-called Earthkind roses are the disease resistant ones. (Strangely enough they don't list Crepuscule among those while Crepuscule is one of my most disease resistant roses.)

Wow! thank you all so much, did not expect such wonderful insights into this question. Once again you just proved that quilters are a very generous group. I am in the extremely early phases of thinking about this. And I am NOT convinced this is the move I want to make. I am retired and will start drawing SS next year, thanks to calliope for mentioning that...would owning a business affect my benefits? One of my thoughts was I would not need the shop to support myself, just to support itself. Any profit would be extra. But SS is something to think about, and will need to be looked into. Many many thanks to quiltpartner for her detailed response. You certainly have a grasp on this subject and I deeply appreciate the time you took to respond. Your points are well taken especially about the "difficult" customers. I know they all can't be as nice as us!! LOL I had already decided that this could not be done without an initial investment of at least $20,000. Good to know that $25 would be more realistic. I live in a town that had a quilt shop that closed about a year ago. The owner had a wonderful shop (to me anyway) but for a variety of reasons, she sold out and closed. We have two active guilds of about 100 members each in this town. We have two options to purchase fabric, Hancocks and Hobby Lobby or drive for 45 minutes. I think combining the quilt shop with another "business" would be a good idea. Not sure about the liquor store though, although I think it could be successful....."buy a bottle get a fat quarter free" promotion. but perhaps a bar/quilt shop combo, catering to the ladies only. Something to think about. LOL There are a lot of retirees in this area....so a place near one of the retirement homes might be something to look at. Anyway I have a LOT of research to do but it was great getting your prospectives. Will let you know what I come up with. Again my deepest appreciation for your responses. Murphy

I'm proud to say I've only financed one vehicle in my life. My first new truck and I got a loan from the bank (the dealer was pulling stunts) for 9 months and paid it off in 5 or 6. I probably should have waited a little while and paid cash for it, but was anxious to get it. Ever since, I've paid cash for every vehicle, new and used. As said, your credit usually needs to be pristine to qualify so be sure to check it and of course, get it in writing! I note you're only financing about 1/4. How long would it take to pay for the whole thing? Depending on the vehicle issues, I'm assuming repair costs would be outrageous? Otherwise repair might still be a good option, or you could just buy a beater to last a while. Couple cautions are to get it in writing before hand and read it thoroughly, at least a couple times. Read it with a skeptical eye, don't assume anything. Look at it as how can they screw me, for things like upping the rate, penalties and the like. See what happens if you pay late. Maybe you never will but it could happen. One late payment can cost hundreds or more in a bad contract. Another thing to watch for is the infamous "Ford add-on" as it's known around here. Ford dealers seem to be the worst, but others do it too. They sell you a vehicle, tie you up a few days "getting it ready", etc, and then when you go to pick it up, won't sell it to you at the agreed price or they change the terms (finance through them, different down payment, different interest rate, etc). "They made a mistake" is the usual line and they can't sell it to you for that. Won't give you a signed contract up front - they "hold the paperwork" until you pick it up. They tried to force my cousin to finance through them or add $1200 to the price and would be required to wait a minimum of a year to pay it off and there'd be a charge to do it. My cousin (an avid Ford loyalist) told them to pound sand and left. They called in a few days to try to get him to do it, he wouldn't, and they wouldn't budge so he told them to leave it sit on the lot and he went and bought a Subaru. Shortly after, my vet got hit for $1500 but didn't want to hassle with dealing with more car jockeys so she paid it. And those are just two examples. Watch for last second add-ons, substituting a different vehicle and other price increases. As vala55 pointed out, much depends on the dealer so if they're slimy, beware, if they're reputable, things could go well. I wouldn't automatically eliminate a dealer finance if I was forced to finance.

DH and I ordered new living room furniture....our sofa and love seat were at least 30 years old and looked it. Not worth recovering. That is our Christmas present to each other. The only family I have left in this world is my sister and BIL and I have almost bought what I plan to get for them. Friends are almost done, I usually make their gifts. DH and I took on two families to look after from Project Share. We've bought their children's toys but still have to get a weeks worth of groceries for the families. We still need a little something for the parents. We will go out this week and get the canned and boxed food and give them $$$ for the turkey and fresh veggies. Each year DH saves his air miles through out the year and we turn it into grocery money for the families. We also save the Shopper's Drug Mart points and use that to buy the toys for Christmas. My sister also contributes to our families. We always have fun trying to see how much we can get with these points. This year we really did well with the point collecting and may even be able to take on a third family. We get to deliver what we bought which is always a lot of fun.

Yes, most with free shipping too! Also did a few site to stores. It keeps the UPS employed :-) I did at least half my shopping that way. Deliveries still coming in!

No, I do whatever I can in my local community. I did some online shopping but all my big purchases came from local shops.

A couple of years I did ALL my shopping on line. Once I had "them" wrap and deliver. But I liked it better when I had everything delivered to my house, so I could inspect, wrap and ship myself. This year I did not shop on line. We stopped exchanging gifts except with kids under ten (two of them) and between DH and me. I give my own kids cash. My sister says thats a bad idea-cash. She gave her daughter $100 for her recent birthday and she blew it on a beer party at her apartment. That girl really needed a winter coat.

Some on line, some local, depends on what I am looking for and weather. I did most of the shopping for the great grandkids at Target. Ours has a good selection of toddlers clothes. Couple of things I ordered on line and had them delivered directly to the people.

I did some on line. Mosatly for hubby's boots. The stores, even CaBELAS' don't have sizes bigger than 12 or 13 in stock. And what DS wanted was not available anywhere near here.

We give the kids/grandkids money, but I do find to find a clever something to put them in that they can keep--like a trinket box or, this year, Bilz Boxes. Last year the girls got bright colored billfolds and the guys got those banks that count the money when you put it in.

So I only by for Harry and got all his on-line. A cover with light for his Kindle, a gift card to Amazon so he can keep replenishing his book supply, a new pair of Docker boat shoes and some new undershirts. It's all here and ready to be wrapped.

Probably more than last year but that was only because I got a Kohl's card last year and shopped in the new store in Frankfort. Other years I have used Amazon for most of my shopping, which is what I did this year.

Since my city voted down a new mall about 5 years ago, I prefer to shop on line. We have a small JCPenneys here and a small Younker's in an old mall here but it is slim pickin's. It is 20 to 30 miles away for good shopping.
I love the convenience of online shopping and not paying sales tax or shipping. If we had the proposed big mall, the city would have lots more revenue in sales and property taxes.

Yes, I shopped quite a bit online in three places: Amazon, Mighty Leaf Tea, LL Bean. I did buy a few things at local shops.

Sheila, I got a bilibo for our grandson, also one of those carpets with roads & houses on it to play with cars. He's a little young for both of these, but the time will come soon enough.

YES and I got better deals because online I can find all sorts of coupon codes for discounts and most all had free shipping so I got it for cheaper than it would have been in the store and I did not spend a dime for gas to go get it.
I much prefer to do it online if I can get it for the same or lower prices. I am just not into the big shopping crowds. In a wheelchair it is really difficult to get around in crowds and I am always afraid of someone falling on me or me running over someones foot. I had one guy a while back at the mall, he was busy talking on his cell phone totally not paying attention to his real surroundings and veered right into me and ended up sitting in my lap!!
Then they act like it was your fault! A lady walking beside us that saw what happened told him well it's a good thing it was not a fountain you would end up on youtube like the other idiot that was not paying attention while on their cell phone. I thought that was a great come back!!

I'm with lynn_d. I shopped in my local little stores. They have different gifts and I want them to stay in business. A lot of omy friends here feel the same way.

For myself, I shop online. I work for the president of a major department store in our country which is ironic since I hate malls, crowds and shopping. I am proud of the work we do and have been treated very well when I have been sick.
