I didn't burn the rolls...but

Well I managed not to burn the dinner rolls today, and as I sat down to the table I felt very proud of myself.

And then, a voice at the table said "Monica, where's the turkey butter"?

Oops.

Every year, I buy the molded(a turkey) butter for Thanksgiving from Keller's. This year, I forgot all about it, and just put a regular stick of butter out.

Heck...they always tease me about the turkey butter...and then they miss it ? :)

Oh well, everything else went well. I made cornbread dressing for the first time (even baked the cornbread myself), and it was well received.

Everyone has left (with baggies of leftovers) and the dishwasher is doing it's thing.

Ours went well too. I had a good time and enjoyed the company, but I was glad when everyone left. The only screw up was when took some food to my mother's home this morning I felt like I was forgetting something. I checked my list and checked it twice, but that didn't matter. I forgot to take her some of the sweet potato/marshmallow dish anyway.

I've never seen any turkey butter. I'll bet it's cute. I like serving unique things like that. If you get some nest year maybe you can show us a picture? maybe? please?

Our kids and grands drove over from Austin with all the food and fixings and we had a wonderful Thanksgiving that they prepared for us and cleaned up for us..It might have been one of our best thanksgivings yet....

In 1910, my great grandfather and all his children except his first born who had already married and had a family in Warrick Co., In, left Indiana for eastern Colorado. There, some 10 - 12 families homesteaded. My grandfather stayed for two years to help his father and mother, then headed back east to marry a little brown eyed lady he had met in Illinois when the family visited with other family before getting on the train for colorado. His sister married my grandmother's brother, so two of the families were double cousins, a shared life and closeness that still holds even for the last few still alive. In due time, he and my grandmother had their own homested. There were few trees, no lumber, houses were block and soddy, or imported wood. 180 acres, so even though they were family, they were not close. All my growing up years, my dad talked of his life on the prairie, growing up and loving it until the dust bowl years hit. He told of prairie dogs, hawks, sickness and quarantines, isolation with no Drs., crops that failed, snow so deep they tunneled to the barn to feed the stock, going barefoot in summer until their feet were so tough they could kick catcti, of driving a team of horses to make lister rows at age 7, of the Drs house that was so small they moved the beds out during the day so they could cook and eat inside; then moved them back inside at night; of riding familiar trails between the family farms at night; of ice cream socials, and cattle drives. There were 2 daughters and 8 sons in due time. My grandparents clung to the sand until there was little left on which to make the trip back to Illinois. Only one great aunt and her husband remained, and in time they purchased all the family land as one large cattle ranch. We visted now and again for family reunions while my dad was alive. Part of the entertainment would be a caravan of trucks traveling old roads long since abandoned, to see tiny little houses, sand blasted, desolate, that were 'home'to this family or that. Once I found a rattlesnake under a sage bush, ripped apart by a badger...reminders that we were interlopers there. We would return white with alkali dust, and memories sparked that would be the conversation for the rest of our time together. My grandparents did finally build a big 2 story house with room enough for all the kids, but it was part of what had to be left behind. It still stands, and all the brothers and sisters did go see it, once knocking on the door and introducing themselves and being made welcome. Even though they are not my memories, my dad's stories of his childhood were part of my childhood, a part of him always wanted to go back to stay. I can go back, find the house, visit with the cousins on the ranch, and be made welcome, but its just as well that it always be a memory.

Hoyas (in general) appreciate gritty, well drained soil. They like bright light but too much sun will burn the leaves. If you get your plant in just the right light it will reward you with lots of flowers. I would suggest repotting yours as soon as you can. Over time, soil breaks down and compacts and basically suffocates the roots. When you repot, be sure to get as much of the old soil off the roots as possible. There are many different mixes out there and I'll let others tell you about what they use, but I use equal parts decomposed granite, pearlite, fine pine bark, and potting soil. With some of my younger hoyas and more water loving hoyas, I use mostly pine bark and pearlite. I haven't gotten the hang of fertilizing yet, so I'll let others talk about that. If you hang out here long enough you'll start accumulating more and more of these wonderful plants!

Kathy, Sorry you having so much trouble, but glad the initial surgery is over. I was very lucky with my surgery and didn't have too much trouble afterward. I never had to take any pain meds stronger than a BC Powder, and my surgeon could not understand this because he said grown men beg for meds after the surgery. I know I have a high threshold for pain. My hip has never caused me any problems at all other than the skin over the incision tends to become dry and itchy. I had an unstable back fracture at L1 so my fusion is higher than yours, but I can't bend at the waist either, and also can't turn. I can turn my head, or my whole body, and nothing in between. In addition to the fusion, they added Harrington rods, so I have a lot of area tied off. They had intended to leave the rods about 2 years and then remove them, but I moved, had different doctors, different insurance, etc. and that just didn't happen. I have done really well and can do most things although I may do them in a different way. The first year and a half will be the worst, but after that you will have learned how to deal with it all and not hurt yourself doing it. I tell you all of this for several reasons. I hope it will help you to cope until you are feeling better. I had the surgery in 1986 and had very little pain until the last year or so, except the one listed below. Shortly after the surgery several things did happen to me, and you may have some of the same issues. (1) I had a metal taste in my mouth as if my fillings were melting. LOL I don't know if it was my body reacting to the metal in my back or what, but that lasted about a year. (2) The muscle burning still happens to me across my shoulders. I wonder if it isn't because so many nerves were cut. I would be very worried however if I had pain shooting down my legs as you describe because that sounds like a spinal issue. (3) I had one little spot (and I mean little spot) that hurt and felt like something was poking me with a sharp object. It was on the opposite hip from where the bone was removed. They did nothing on that side. The doc marked it and took xrays and there was nothing there that should hurt. Probably something pinching from the new posture. It went away on it's own. (4)I have had several dentists that would not touch my mouth unless I was on antibiotics. I took a lot. My current dentist doesn't do that, but I still usually ask for one when I am going to have my teeth cleaned. The theory at the time of my surgery was that a bacterial infection in your blood would quickly form along that steel and that was very close to the spine. Mine was probably because of my rods tho because I have 9 inches of steel down each side of my spine. That makes for a long incision. (5)I have screws also and some little things that look like bumper jacks. Every now and then it feels like I get a muscle hung on the wrong side of something. For me it is mostly at the top of my rods, but a screw would do the same thing. The muscle will ache and cramp, but usually if I can relax it will stop and slide back into the right place. In my case it normally happens when I am on my back and have my hand, or hands, above my head. I just lower my hand, try to relax, and wait. It seems to fix itself in a couple of minutes. (6)And there is the cold.....I was never a cold natured person and that is a good thing because when that steel gets cold, you are cold all over. Of course, I have a lot more steel, but when it gets cold, I don't just shiver, I shake. It bothers my husband so badly that he always just tries to put me in a big bear hug to try to help me warm up. I had suffered for many years with serious headaches which went away after the surgery. That was a bonus that the doc didn't expect. Life will be good again, but it will be a little different. Hang in there and it will get better. My thoughts and prayers go with you as you recover. I had pillows made by an upholster. I made my out of 2 different fabrics so I can switch with the seasons - with the welt cord a contrasting fabric. Here they are with the wool plaid for winter. And here with the khaki linen. Older pic but only one I have with old couch... On my club chairs I had kidney pillows made the same way but they are tufted with a button of the constrasting fabric. Just me and my son but we had great fellowship. I baked a spiral ham and had Potato Salad, Slaw, English Peas and my son made the rolls with honey butter. We made Rice Krispie treats later in the afternoon. Watched a little football and a Starwars movie.

Ours was a little different. We did hot dogs and kolbassy on the grill, had potato salad and coconut creme pie! We did the turkey thing last week when our other son was home.

We had a nice time at my sisters. We all live in the same town, I just live farther out in the country part of town. Hubs and I picked Mama up and drove the 1.5 minutes to my sisters house. Her hubby's family was all there too. The funny thing was, sister's hubby's family is about 25 people. Sister was to cook the turkey and I cooked the ham. I bought a really big ham knowing a lot would be there. My sister the ding bat bought a 9 pound turkey for all these people!!! We all had a taste of it and oh yea...she forgot to take the giblets out!! hahahahaha Thank goodness there was a lot of ham. LOL

I've seen turkey butter before, it's cute! You won't be allowed to forget it again, Monica!

Our turkey day was downright weird. We were invited to Woody's hunting buddy's house, I have never met his wife before so I was feeling a little weird about that, to start. Then he told us he didn't know what time to plan to eat because she has "no concept of time". Great. Plan was to go over at 3, eat around 5, hopefully. He called at 2:30, changed our arrival time to 4:30. So we showed up at 4:30, with a nice dessert and big bottle of white wine. No wife. She had headed for her room when we got there and she never came out. At all. I still have not met her.

Dinner was odd, but OK, considering there was NO stuffing, no potatoes, no sweet potatoes, and the veggie was canned green beans, cold. Our poor host was very embarrassed by his wife, blames it on her meds.

What a goofy evening.

I never heard of a turkey butter. My Mom used to get a Butter Lamb every Easter. I believe it's a Polish tradition. Glad your Thanksgiving turned out well. Mine did.

Our dinner was great, no mishaps this year...Although my DD and her family were invited to her sister in laws and couldn't refuse and said, "never again"...It seems they deep fried a 12# turkey that came out with enough meat for 1 person. She also had another turkey in the oven and said, the popper didn't come up but it's been in there for 2 hours so it must be done?????So for dinner they had potatoes, canned gravy and some extras that my DD had made....DD just stopped for some of my leftovers and darn, I forgot to give her sweet potatoes....DD did say, next year, they will be sitting at my table....

I googled the butter- look, I found one for Christmas, too!

Susan, it was quite awkward at first, but we got over it when he kept telling us it was HER, not us, and that we shouldn't take it personally and that he was so sorry and we couldn't help but feel so badly for him. His wife is rather unstable and I just can't imagine living with someone when you never know, hour-by-hour, just whom you are going to be living/talking/sleeping with.
