Remember Piggy Sue?

Most of you probably remember Piggy Sue, the feral hog that I raised from a baby. This is her today...rather, tonight.

She weighs about 450 lb. She is huge, but very tame. I don't feed her very much...just a little grain at night and she comes down to the bayou and eats a little with the raccoons. During the day she goes with her friend, Piggy Lee, to the woods or they sit on the bank of the bayou where the water is shallow.

This is Piggy Lee. She just showed up here when she was a baby and was very wild but she has tamed down a lot and likes to be scratched, but she isn't as trustworthy as Piggy Sue. You have to keep an eye on her.

When she saw me tonight, she laid down, wanting me to scratch her, but she was covered in wet mud, so I didn't.

When I didn't scratch her, she sat up.

They get big. I don't know about the females but the males get huge. I joke and say that they are about the size of a volkswagen, but from pictures I have seen of ones that have been killed, they are very big. I would research more, but when I search feral hogs on the internet, I find pics of dead ones hung up to trees and dogs attacking them, and I find that disturbing. At least, it is something I don't want to see. I will keep updating her progress as she grows. She is very funny and playful. She likes to take an old tee shirt and drag it around. She likes for me to use it like a bullfighter cape and she runs through it. Today I went in the house, wearing sweats, and came out wearing jeans, and she was startled and didn't recognize me and ran away, but came back when I called her. She's a lot of fun.

She's doing pretty good. She has the whole pen to herself, having evicted the chicken and the duck. She lays around in her house and has plowed up the whole bottom of the pen. It has about 6" of oyster shell under a layer that has built up over time of shavings, etc., and she hasn't gotten down to the shell yet, but she has pretty well dug up the whole thing. She is getting her pellets and I added a little rabbit pellets to it and chopped apple and banana. Also when I was weeding a flower bed, I took some of the weeds and cut the tops off and she ate the roots, and I had some collards here for the squirrel and she ate some of that. Also had a few rat biscuits...and some "hawg biscuits"...dog biscuits. Someone sent me a bunch of peanut butter flavored dog biscuits and my dogs don't care for them, but she likes them. She's not a picky eater. :)) I just got back from the Dollar Store and bought a ball for her...a little smaller than a basket ball. I thought she might enjoy pushing it around, but so far, is afraid of it. But all in all, she seems to be settling in nicely. She let me scratch her on the back, but she hasn't really shown any appreciation for it like my other pigs.

Most of the possums don't need rehabbing. People trap them because they get in their yards and eat their cat food. I relocate them. Fortunately, possums relocate easily...most wildlife doesn't. If they would just leave them alone and put up their darned cat food, the possums would move on. They seldom stay in one place for very long and they have a very short life span. I also get orphans that I raise and injured ones that truly do need help. Right now I have 5 possums here that are non releasable, one that is a baby, one that has a broken leg but is almost well, and one that could leave if she wanted to, and one that was raised by someone as a pet and is too tame to be turned loose because he has no aggression, whatsoever. Sometimes I have as many as 40 or more, tho.

Hugs...Rest in peace Piggy Sue... Marilyn, hope you don't mind me sharing this.. A case near here. A friend free leased her gentle horse to a little girl and it went to a boarding stable. She thought all was well, but went along with the horse dentist to visit another patient and stopped in to see him. Good thing she did because he was about starved. The vet said he was about a 3 on the weight scale. The stable owner came up with all kind of excuses - horse had bad teeth, was old etc. She took her horse back and he looks great. Other horses weren't so lucky because 2 had died recently before he was removed. The animal warden was called and didn't show up for a while and the case was thrown out because the warden didn't see the horse right away - even though he was repeatedly called. The judge didn't want to see the paperwork or the testimony of the vet. There is no justice for animals... I heard yesterday the warden is gone now - a bit too late. I hope you get your revenge, but be careful...

Oh, no...unfortunately, they pretty much have the run of the whole place. They are better watch dogs than my dogs. People are terrified of them...but, unfortunately, they are terrified of people they don't know.

Funny, but many years ago, I had a pot belly pig and her name was "Piggy Sue", too !
My boys were young teenagers at the time, and they would sneek her into the house and wait for me to find her, and then roll over laughing ! she was a joy to have....someday I need to get another one !

OMGosh! Those girls did get so big! Just LUV the names you gave them, Marilyn. lolol

I know how I maintain my fat self, but how do they remain so large if they're not fed that much?

No, no wild pigs around...thank goodness. Piggy Sue has been spayed, but not Piggy Lee. She was too wild when she came here and now that I can handle her a little, I don't think a vet would touch her.

Piggy Lee came from a hog hunter who went to prison. His son turned her loose...I guess, thinking they could hunt her later, but I talked to him and told him under no circumstances is he to come on my place...or his dogs...and hunt. He said he wouldn't, and they never leave the place, so they should be safe.

How'd they get so fat? Piggy Sue has been spayed and she likes to lay around. Piggy Lee is big but not so fat that she can't run. They just eat regular and of course, they are wormed 4 times a year, so they look better than most feral hogs.

That cat is Sonny. I call him a "harlequin". I have six of them...they are my favorites. I have his brothers, Chang and Eng. Chang is white with black ears and tail and Eng is white with blue ears and tail. And, of course, there is their mother, JoJo...cousin, Charles, and little sister 'Kunk Monkey. :))
