Increasingly shrinking TP rolls has been a thorn in my side for many years. Eons ago I had to use some from a roll before putting them on the holder as they were too big to fit. They also fit fairly snugly side to side. Now they look like someone else has used half the roll (and that's the double rolls), then repackaged to sell to me. And there's more than an inch of the empty space on the sides of the rollers.

I think the Kirkland brand is the only one that's really wide anymore. I bought some Charmain recently. We don't really care for it. Toooo thick for us! lol

There's a new one that'll be on store shelves soon that don't have the cardboard roll anymore. It holds it's shape right to the very last sheet. The majority of people throw the cardboard out instead of recycling them, so this eliminates the waste.

Northern got narrower about a year ago. There is very few brands that I like, so I still buy it. How does the Kirkland brand compare to the "feel" of Northern? Any ideas?

Kirkland has changed their packaging and I think the size. I need to find an old roll and compare.

The Kirkland brand's new packaging annoys me! There's way too much plastic.

I like the feel of Kirkland just fine. It's just soft enough. I don't care for Charmin--way too cushy soft.

Between Kirkland and Northern, I like Kirkland better.

We really liked a BJ's brand for quite a while so bought those huge packages. When they were discontinued/changed we changed to a Wegman's brand. But they have sooo many different sizes, softness and densities. OK, so we settled on the package with the most sheets per roll which was the purple packaging--6 rolls, 12, 24, it didn't matter. The ones in purple were the ones we wanted. It was easy enough that even DH was able to bring home the right ones.

Until it wasn't. The rolls looked the same but without any change in our "habits" we were replacing them much quicker. Squeeze them and they're half the size! Very loosely rolled. Packaging colors had changed and now we are blue. And I've noticed, too, that they don't cover the roller side to side anymore.

When you talk about Kirkland changing their packaging, having too much plastic.....ours in Canada have always had each roll wrapped in plastic, then all 36 wrapped in the big plastic.

That has been my beef all along.....they don't need to wrap each one. Wasn't yours always like that, or is it even worse now?

We've only just opened a Costco locally, before it was a few hours drive away and not really worth the hastle of getting there. Now that it is very local I have started to shop there and especially like there paper towel and kitty litter. For the first time I have bought their toilet paper but haven't opened it yet. I like that they are all individually wrapped, epecially the paper towel as it keeps it clean while on the shelf.
What other kirkland products are good or better than the brand names?
Oh I did get their large roll of double sided wrapping paper, it was only $11.

Taigen, people swear by the Kirkland brand HE detergent, if you have a front-load.

Their kitty litter is a great price if you have cats. Also I now buy my quinoa there. Very, very cheap! (Quinoa is a grain that you cook like rice).

Their buns for under $5 for 48 is an awesome deal when you are having company. I know people who buy the "cheater chicken" there, as it's a big one for a good price. (rotisserie chicken).

Oh, I always buy the Krusteaz pancake mix. It's a great price as well. I use it for pancakes and waffles.

For toilet paper I still go with Scott or occasionally some generic 1000 sheeter roll. At 30â-50â per roll that is comparable to 5-6 rolls of virtually any other brand, it's a bargain and I like the paper. I've noticed some size changes though in paper towels too. Dropping 1/4" makes a difference on my paper towel holder!

FWIW, I believe Huish still makes Kirkland laundry products. Huish is the maker of many store brands, Sun and now owns Wisk along with other names.

I noticed this just the other day! For the TP holder in the guest bath and the pieces attached to the wall were spaced so there was just enough room for a roll. Now it looks stupid with all the extra space. It looks like we installed the TP holder wrong.

We have trouble with some brands when putting them into septic tanks - they don't disintegrate ... so my neighbour says.

I'll need to get a list from her of what to buy/avoid ... but, since I live alone, and try to do my business when away from home, to save that shrinking paper (1) ... I imagine that it'll take a long time to fill the tank!

(Then, of course, some might accuse me of being, " ... full of it", as well).

(Which I'd deny, of course).

We who "craft" with those toilet paper tubes will be hoarding them from now on, since hearing that the cardboard tube will soon be a thing of the past. I wonder if they will do away with it in paper towel rolls as well.

I dunno, Linda--I think the core-less rolls will be something that consumers will be annoyed with enough to complain, and maybe it will be a failed experiment by the manufacturers.

Taigen: The only other thing that I rely on Costco for is their canned tuna --Kirkland brand, solid white packed in water (I do believe there's a tad bit of oil in there). Surpasses Bumble Bee and the like.

People with big hands will need to be careful!
