Question about pumpkin pie....

I'm doing the pies for DD's first thanksgiving in their home. Can I mix the pie ingredients here, refrigerate it, take it in a cooler and pour it into the crusts and bake it when I get there?

Thanks for any tips.

My suggestion: Before putting it in the crust, take it out of cooler, and let it become room temperature.
Will make a difference in the baking time if you put it in the crust cold.

Spoke to my husband about squash last night and he clarified somethig. Apparently all the yellow squash this summer has tasted funny to him. So could it be the unusually high heat this summer? can that affect taste? I just can't think why the squash wouldn't taste good this year.

Yes you can grow 3 plants in there but as they say they like a deep root system so first drill alot of hole in the bottom of the pool and put it on the place you want to grow it but first somewhat loosen the soil before you place the pool on top of the place that will encourage the roots to go thru the holes at the bottom of the pool then this is the critical part do not put any gravel or stone in the bottom of the pool but fill it with 1/4 bagged composted manure+1/4 spagnumn peat,+1/4 of your own compost or some great garden type soil ,+ 1/4 or a little bit more of perlite which is good for drainage and air space for good healthy root growth add about 1/2 to cup of lime,about a quart of granite or basalt dust or sand from a rock quary pretty cheap about 2 dollars for 5 gallons they have a huge pile of it from crushing and snapping there stones its in there way a couple of cups of organic time release fertilizer 3/4/5 or 4/4/4 or 3/4/6 ,blood meal if you have it they love nitrigen,fish bone meal is great it has lots of phosphorous to get it off to a great start and sets the blossoms mix all these ingredients together throughly and put in the pool and you will have fantastic pumpkins but be sure to put alot of hole hopefully all at least 1/2 in bottom of pool set on some loose soil with somewhat good drainage and plant them and eventually the roots will work there way thru the big hole into the soil below the pool great idea try put a little fertilizer under the pool before you put it down and fill it with soil good luck I think you will have success

I just processed a huge L.I. Cheese Squash (same as a pumpkin) and a small sugar pie pumkin. Here is what worked well for me. Wash outside of it really well, I scrubbed it with a vegetable brush. Cut in half. Scoop out middle with large spoon. Cut squash in large chunks. I then used my turkey roaster, but you won't need anything that big unless you are doing a big one or several. Add just enough water in bottom to keep from sticking and create some steam. Cook over low to medium heat (whatever it takes to keep it cooking but not burning) until the flesh is tender. It won't take too long. Take off burner, remove lid and let cool until you can handle the chunks. Then scrape off the flesh with a spoon into large bowl. I used the food processor to puree it smooth. Pack into containers and freeze. I put what is called for in a pie recipe in a single container. If you have a place to store them, they might just keep over winter without processing. That is what I plan to do. I will just work up the ones with bad spots that I think won't keep well.

I think it would make a mess. I baked one today and started to pull it out thinking it was done, it wasn't and it sloshed up over the crust.

It should be fine if you put the pies in after the turkey & all else is out - sometimes when guests bring things to put in the oven & there is no space the hostess gets stressed.

I love when my guests bring their pies all baked - it takes stress off of me & my oven when trying to make sure everything gets done at on time. The kitchen is such a busy place that day and there is alot of stress to make it the prefect thanksgiving. I would probably bake my pies ahead,take them finshed, and dig in with 2 hands to help my DD with her 1st thanksgiving.

I learned this lesson a long time ago - my Dear MIL just about freaked out when I brought something to be baked to the first thansgiving I spent with them - I was trying to impress -she was trying to get dinner on the table!

Pumpkin pie is like a custard. It needs to set.
I'd go ahead and bake it, and travel with it. Should be just fine.

Friend is traveling and has already made her apple pie and pecan pie, taking it in a cooler.

Okay, thanks everyone. We're going there on Wed. and I'd need to bake the pies tomorrow (Tues.) or bake them at her house on Wednesday. Her oven will be very busy on Thursday, for sure! Plus her little one just started walking and will be all over the place....LOL!

We have to take a lot of extras that she doesn't have to put the meal together, and I'm looking for a short cut to the pie situation.

Taking the mix in a cooler and then baking the pie there will be fine. There is not leavening or anything 'touchy' in the pie filling, so mixing it ahead of time will not hurt it at all. But, that actually seems like MORE work than baking them and bringing them. Extra things to wash. Extra worry about them coming out right when there are other distractions. Timeing all the oven items to make room for pies. You don't eat a pumkin pie hot right out of the oven either. One of the reasons pies are popular for large gatherings is that they can be made ahead of time.

But, if the pies are to be eaten on Thursday, is it better to bake them here on Tuesday and travel on Wednesday? Or, to bake them at her house on Wednesday after we get there? I won't be baking them on Thanksgiving day. I know how busy the oven will be then and there will be 3 of us in the kitchen....me, DD and her MIL who will be using the oven for her rolls and her peach pie that morning....

frazoo - given that you aren't going to be interfering with her oven on Thanksgiving Day, I would do exactly as you're suggesting. I'd make them at her house on Wednesday. Plenty of time to set. I think I'd rather have a one-day old pie than a two-day old pie (which would still be fine, I'm sure).

Thanks, Suzieque! That's what I'll do. I just wasn't sure if it would be okay to travel with the pie mix in a cooler or not. Sure seems the easiest way....get there, pour the pie mix into crusts, put into oven....an hour or so later we've got pies!!
