Williams Sonoma hot chocolate

Has anyone ever had this stuff? OMG, it's so good!! I just bought some today. It's shaved chocolate that you melt in hot milk, and for 1 cup, it's, gasp, 350 calories!!! And then to top it off, add one of their vanilla marshmellows, another 70 calories! yikes!! But it sure is heavenly and I'm not a big chocolate fanatic or hot chocolate drinker.

I had forgotten all about their Hot Chocolate. It is the best! I bought 2 containers last year, one for me and one for my sister in law. Guess who kept both! ME.

I buy it every year...in the red and white peppermint tin -right?
It's become our traditional after-midnight-mass-on-Christmas-eve-in-front-of-the-tree-and-fireplace drink.

For the rest of the year, Ghardelli also sells shaved chocolate in a tin for hot chocolate...it just doesn't have that touch of peppermint oil that the WS does.

The USDA standards are established principally for the home food preserver. Many recipes are not USDA-approved but are still tested and safe. Lots of labs have that capacity. For example, Oregon State has a small entrepreneurship program which supports new purveyors of small-yield bottled food products and offers lab facilities for the testing to assure products are safe for sale. However, they would still have to be safe when processed and meet FDA plus any state regulations. Basically it comes down to the credentials of the person(s) who wrote the book and what they have done to assure food safety according to the criteria Dave indicated. One of the problems I have with many recipes/books is that the author(s) may have credentials but not necessarily credentials appropriate to home food processing. So Rick Fields, for example, does sell commercial pickles and relishes. However, he has available to him processing equipment not available to the average home preserver. Without his assurance of specific testing and safety in the home environment who knows how suitable the recipe is? I might add that in the home environment developers of canning recipes need to be sure they fall within a certain margin of error because there's more individual variation when you have many cooks using different product. In a commercial environment there's much more consistency. So Beverly Alfeld, for example, in her pickling book never goes above 4.3 pH, even though the limit for higher-acid BWB is 4.6 pH. She believes that leeway is important. Basically, I operate with a do not assume stance. If you like the store then go work for it part time. I did. It was a dream come true. The people are hired because they know the merchandise and are users. You get big discounts and that is why most employees are there. Everyone is part time. Throw in your cooking stories and you will have a ball. The staff is made up of people like all of you who will become life long friends. As you see them as a sales person is truly who they are.I have been to them all over the country and I know you all agree. They knew me as a customer before I had cancer and when I got cancer and was bored they said come be with us and pick your own hours. They begged me to. I did and gave cooking demonstrations. I was so alive and happy doing that. The best customers in the world go in there and there is no pressure. I was too sick to stay but it was my decision to leave. After I was done with cancer I celebrated in many ways and one meaningful way was with them. You betcha. At this time of year I do think of my dear, dear friends who are working very hard and I go in to give them a few hundred quick kisses and hugs. I hope one of you does work for them.

I have the mugs, dinner and salad plates and love them. I've had them for a few years and no chips or broken dishes and best of all no knife marks. Excellent everyday dishes.

oh those buche de noel look magnifique! The orange-passione-mangue especially sounds delicious. I was in W-S yesterday -- and realized that yes, people do buy a lot of their food as gifts. There were also a lot of people buying cookware (great sale), literally carts full. I picked up a small assortment of salts --- $27 for literally a handful of salt. I put it down. I walked away empty handed, which was an exercise in restraint for me -- and plus what I wanted had to be ordered online. I read the stories about Chuck Williams and his passion for cooking and beautiful yet functional objects. Some amazing beginnings from someone left to fend for themselves at age 16 and getting started with his first shop in his early 40s (after his first trip to Paris, and his first visit to e.Dehillerin).

Ron, it's made by Williams Sonoma, it's a store that sells kitchen stuff. if you dont have one of their stores, you can get it online.

Monica, I bought both the regular chocolate and the peppermint. I didnt try the peppermint yet but I'm sure it's even better. Is it only sold this time of year?

Yes, the peppermint is only sold during the Christmas season.
Have you tried the peppermint bark candy???

We don't have Williams Sonoma but I looked it up. The hot chocolate sounds devine! The Peppermint Bark candy was on the WS page and looked wonderful too!

I googled them and see that the closest store to me is at the Mall of America, an hour away. It would have to be really, really, good to get me there at this time of year.

Have you ever tried their Cranberry Sauce? I buy it for every Thanksgiving and Christmas and it is delicious!

I am going to KOP tomorrow and I will get this. They also sell the See's candy this time of year at the mall, which I love too.

I love that hot chocolate. WS also sells the best Pecan Pumpkin Butter. They give you recipes to cook with it such as breads or pies. But i prefer to serve it on crackers with a dolop of fresh cream That is the way that they served(sample) it to me about 7 years ago. It is getting a bit pricey. Around $10 a jar.
