I used to have a grinder like that. I don't know what happened to it. I used to grind up cheap steaks for hamburger with it.

Yes it was a great help many years ago I think every kitchen had one. Grinding leftover roast beef to make shepherds pie was one thing I remember using it for. Very handy. Now of course the food processors are what we use.

My parents had one. They used to grind meat in it.

Mom had one! She used to buy chunks of bologna and grind that with crackers and pickle relish for Dad's lunches.

Oh yeah if you butchered your meat your owned one. We used it all the time to make sausage. One had an attachment to put the casing on then grind the sausage and stuff the sausage into the casings.
I have no idea what happened to the one we had at my parents house or my grandparents.

I had an electric grinder....gave it away.
I still have the one that was my mom's.......it is very old but works very well.
It is probably over 70 years old.

I have one hanging in my kitchen along with many other utensils that are not used anymore!

I hadn't used it in several years, but mine was once my grandmothers. And, I ground a lot of clams with that grinder. I do them in the kitchen aid processor in about 4 pulses now, but that grinder served me well many years.

Yes, I have one around here somewhere. I don't use it any more, use my food processor or grinder on my Kitchen Aid.

You haven't lived until you've cranked one of these all afternoon at butchering time. Our family had one in the 1940s that was a little larger than this one, but it clamped to a table top the same way. We called ours a sausage grinder. (It's a meat grinder.)

There were several accessories with our grinder. The one that got the most use was the sausage stuffer on butchering day. It was my job to crank the thing while mom prepared the meat mix to be ground and collected the sausage.

Actually I have one that was my mom's, purchased in about 1930 or 1931 as part of a set of Wear-Ever Aluminum pots and pans. There's another one in my basement that belonged to my husband's grandmother purchased in the 30's as well. Hubby's mother gave me her's and I have one of my own as well. Each of them have different grinding wheels and have their own purpose around here. Because of the different sizes, the wheels aren't interchangeable. I also have a lightweight version that lives in my kitchen for grinding cooked meat for sandwiches. It gets used monthly at least. The others are used at canning time to grind stuff up for relish then they go back for a rest.

Had one until last month. Cleaning out lots of things we don't use anymore. I looked at it a bit before deciding to send it on to the goodwill. How I remember the days of standing there turning the handle while grandmama and mother made sausage that would hang in the well house . Now it makes me wonder if we should have kept it.

I have the one that belonged to my MIL. I still use it to grind the oranges and raisins for a cake we love, as using the food processor doesn't grind them just right. Some years ago they were going for premium prices at auctions, but just a temporary fad, I guess

I've never tried shredding cooked beef with my processor. I'm assuming you just use the chopping blade, as the shredder would be too fine. Is that right?

Old fangled sometimes produces better results than new fangled. New ones sell for only $20. Think there is an obsolete model that fetches collector prices. I only have two of the three blades. Ever try chopping nuts?

I have one similar to the one pictured....a 1946 model...same age as me. I don't use it....use it as a decoration.

Sure do remember. Our kitchen had a pull-out bread board above a drawer. My mother would clamp the grinder to the board to make hash from leftover roasts.

As soon as I saw the photo I remembered the metalic odor of that cast iron.

chisue - why, how clever those old timers were, a pull out board above a drawer to create work space. My board is still there. For the grinder too.

Old Fixer, my previous kitchen had three of those built in, above drawer bread boards and I used them all the time. We've been here a year now and I still find myself reaching for one - this kitchen has none. I miss them. I pulled them out when unloading groceries from the car, to sit a hot skillet on so the food would stop cooking, to cool cookies, all kinds of things. Instant hidden countertop space.

I've got counter space now, and still reach for the pull outs which aren't here.

That's what I always used to make cranberry relish. I couldn't find it this year so I bought the relish. Don't know why I didn't think of using the food processor. Duh!

I have one and use it too! Although not terribly often. I used it last Wednesday, to grind fresh cranberries for my cranberry fluff salad for Thanksgiving dinner. I use it occasionally to grind beef or corned beef to make homemade hash, and to grind bologna to make that bologna/egg/pickle relish sandwich spread. Hmm... my mom used to grind cucumbers for a cucumber salad she made. I haven't had that in years! I think I just had an idea for something to make soon! :-)

I used one for many years. I bought a new table and it wouldn't clamp on it. Hubby bought me an electric one. I love it. I gave my old one to a neighbor.. I remember my mom using one when I was a kid..

I really miss my pull-out bread board that I had in my previous apartment. The hole/slot is here but the board is missing. I used it all the time, except to cut bread on. Made a perfect spot to put the dishes on when serving from the pots; setting hot pots on, a multitude of uses.

jasdip - go to any lumberyard and buy a 3/4" thick board. Might have to cut it to fit your opening.
