They've Started - Christmas Movies

I'll readily admit it. I'm not a fan of the made-for-TV Christmas movies. And they've started already! Two of my favorite TV channels already started them back-to-back. ACK!!! Could they even think of waiting until December???

Now we've got 2 months of them. And I don't watch a one. I know that many of you do, of course, and look forward to them. I don't. Too schmaltzy and sappy for my taste. I'm not meaning to insult your taste - just voicing mine.

Couldn't we strike a balance and at least wait until Thanksgiving is over?

Ok, vent over. Thank goodness for On Demand and for rentals.

If you're referring to the one channel I watch occasionally, this isn't the first year they've been doing this. Starts end of Oct, runs thru Dec, even after Christmas. I rarely turn that channel on for two whole months. I totally agree that they would do better, in my opinion, to restrict it till after Thanksgiving.

Susieque, you're a girl after my own heart. Cloying is the word that comes to my mind.

We might be in the minority ; seems like they must be popular.

Sorry to say this Mike, but I was one of the kids who would try to egg on the other kids into licking the pole. PS stay away from the furnace. One new movie that I've seen the last couple of years is called SILENT NIGHT. Starring Linda Hamilton, it's set at Christmas 1944 during the battle of the bulge. A group of American and German soldiers meet up at a house in the forest. Enemies at first, they slowly become comrades. It's a great movie. John

Good Thread!! My favorite movie that I must watch every year, since I saw it on T.V. when I was really little, was "Santa Clause the Movie" It has Dudley Moore in it, as well as John Lithgow. My tape is getting pretty old, but I love that movie soooo much. Has anyone seen the Wookie Christmas Special? It's absolutely hysterical. My BIL is a Star Wars fan and just happened to get his hands on a copy of this. Harrison Ford doesn't even like to awknowledge this film, that's how "bad" it really is. Think about a half hour of wookies "talking". Hehe, Happy Holidays!!

Oh, Christmas movies... so many of them are wonderful! However, I haven't a favorite one, just some of them that I particularly like since they remind me my childhood, when our family gathered together. The first one is The Bishop's Wife: I remember having watched this movie, lying behind the sofa as I would have been in bed... The second one is a French one (obviously) which in French is called "Santa Claus is a junk" - there has been an American remake that I did not appreciate at all: "Mixed Nuts" with Steve Martin (like this actor!) I think. The third one is Dial Code Santa Claus (also French movie) and the last one that I've probably watched a THOUSAND TIMES is... "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" Chevy Chase is a wonderful actor! I really enjoy watching this movie!!!!

My dad died this past spring. He had Alzheimer's Dementia and was not himself. He did not talk much in his last few years. He could recognize people much of the time, but just did not hold conversations. He was also on hemodialysis for kidney failure. He was quite frail. Dad's skin could tear if you simply tried to move his arm or lift his leg. It was past his time to go, and most of us knew that. I talked to his wife a couple days ago and she seems better. She is able to do things and make decisions again. For me, it has been a strange death. He quit being my father when he completely handed our household over to his second wife. He stopped our special times together after school doing a motor paper route - his wife took over what was once an every-third-week treat for me and my brother and sister. He ignored us. Everything about our home life changed - even what we called the rooms of the house! I distinctly remember her answer when I suggested a Christmas present to consider for my older sister: "She moved out (and went to the big city to live with our mother after graduating from high school) and is no longer part of this family. She won't be getting a Christmas present." Little jabs of cruelty aimed at us and outright violence aimed at her own daughter had me out of that house before the year was up. When you have had to call Protective Services on your dad and his wife, it makes mourning his death twenty years later a bit complicated. But with him gone, there is no chance to ever reach an understanding that includes his point of view. I know from what he said in the past that he minimized the pathology of his wife. I guess he has such a big heart that he forgave her over and over again. How that helps their addicted son today, I have no idea. My daddy has been gone a long, long time. My father died this spring.

Can you believe I've never seen "It's a Wonderful Life" and don't even know what it's about? "Miracle on 34th Street" has become boring. But Charlie Brown?! You bet ! Love Peanuts !

I don't watch much tv but if there is something on that I don't like I switch the channel or turn it off. I don't sit and complain about the shows, LOL

I watch Christmas movies off and on all year and listen to Neil Diamond singing Christmas carols. Love that guy.

Interesting response, Casey! Of course I switch the channels. I was just "chatting" and voicing an opinion; didn't mean for it to seem like I was sitting and complaining about the shows. LOL

ETA: As I'd mentioned, I'm referring to 2 of my favorite channels. My main point is that, now that they've got those blasted Christmas movies on 24/7, the shows I like on those channels aren't playing. Ok?

Elf has been on year round. Believe it or not! It's one of my top three favorites, and so, it sticks out everytime I flipping through the channel guide.

I watched part of Elf and turned it off, to silly for me. I do like Christmas vacation, A Christmas Card and several others. I just watched A Christmas Card last week. Very good.

Anything is better than those horrid horror shows!! Yesterday I turned to my local cable stations--I usually use it as a "radio"--it is now playing Christmas music!!

I have a dear friend who watches the holiday moves as part of her pining away for what she thinks if the perfect life with the perfect holiday. I wish for her that she'd spend more time in the real world so that she could make her own happy ending instead of waiting for Hallmark to deliver it to her door.

I enjoy holiday movies, but I do wish the holidays were not so stretched out like they are now. Makes them seem less special.

I was talking to a lady today and she said that there's a Christmas parade tomorrow morning in a town not far from us.

There's Christmas music on the radio station I listen to while in the car...it's been going a few days already that I know of...and it's only the 7th of November....way before Thanksgiving.
