A Survey: Your Favorite Holiday Movie

Well, 'tis finally The Season. Our sweet DD has been badgering us for the past week to start watching Christmas movies, but we're adament . . . no holiday movies until the night after Thanksgiving! For us, that's when the holiday season officially starts.

We always start with our favorite: "Miracle on 34th Street" (the newer version). It kind of seems most appropriate, as it starts off on Thanksgiving. We have quite a collection, from "Jesus of Nazareth" and "White Christmas" to the (first two) "Home Alone" movies and "Chevy Chase's Christmas Vacation". We always watch this first movie of the season while we eat our dinner of (yummy) Thanksgiving dinner leftovers. It's a family tradition . . . and after yesterday's big feast, I love having no dishes to wash, because we're eating on T'day paper plates! ;^P

So, what's your ONE, all-time, most favorite holiday movie?????????

The Bishops Wife (with Cary Grant & David Niven).

Only one???? That's not fair.
OK. It's a Wonderful Life.

(But we also watch White Christmas, Holiday Inn, The Bishop's WIfe (the old one), the original Miracle on 34th Street, Christmas in Connecticut (the old one), The Bells of Mary's, Annie, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Elf, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Little Woman, A Christmas Story, and The Santa Clause.)

Now, here' where someone might be able to help me. Is there a movie or TV Movie of The Gift? And where can I locate it?

My favorite B&W movie is The Women, directed by George Cukor, 1939. Oklahoma, as I recall, was in color. I tried to watch it recently, since I had recorded it on DVR, but 30 minutes of it was all I could bear. I'm not a fan of musicals, however, except really off-beat ones like Help!. GWTW was in color also. Other B&W movies I like include Night of the Iguana, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Suddenly Last Summer, The Rose Tattoo, Hunchback of Notre Dame (with Anthony Quinn and Gina Lolabrigida), Bringing up Baby, The Day The Earth Stood Still, It Came From Outer Space, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Citizen Kane. These probably aren't your taste, but they are old and B&W! In L.A., any movie that is more than 10 years old is considered old. Lars

Playing with my camera one night, I took a picture of Uncle Charlie giving niece Charlie the ring in Shadow of a Doubt. I can't bring myself to delete this picture! diane_nj mentioned Key Largo. Some other great Edward G. Robinson movies: Double Indemnity (seductive Barbara Stanwyck practically sets the screen on fire), Scarlet Street, The Stranger. Paul Muni is excellent in Scarface & I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang. I can see why he was so respected in his day.

This looks like fun! Here are my answers: When protecting your plants, who is your worst enemy? Bugs, mostly green caterpillars because they hide so well. I recently had a HUGE tomato hornworm on my potatoes- it was hidden so well, I didn't even notice it until it was right in my face! Where do you look for new plants and flowers? Websites mostly, also some retail stores. I try to do local nurseries for the most part, I feel like they just have better stock (and more options). I haven't ordered online yet, but I've been getting into starting from seed vs transplant so that might be changing soon. If you could shut down a government program and use the funds for a plant project, what plant project would you choose? School Gardens- I think it would be great to get kids understanding not only where their food comes from, but the effort that goes into growing that food. What has surprised you most about Gardening? All the plants that are edible. I enjoy the reward at the end of the growing season! Favorite Plant: Artichoke Favorite Swap or Swap Group: Never done it before, but perhaps one day Favorite “Natural” gardening trick/advice: Picking bugs off of plants, killing them and leaving them near the plant they were found on- I did that for a while and now I've got a few songbirds that do a daily evening hop through my container plants, looking for new bugs to eat! Work free pest removal!

Polar Express. That movie is magical, I always cry when the little boy, who has never received a gift, arrives home and finds his. What is the movie with the heater miser? That is my old favorite.

A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation and Elf.

I saw a boxed set a target yesterday with 4 movies and it had these 3, but now I can't remember which one the 4th one was.

While You Were Sleeping (Bill Pullman, Sandra Bullock), Merry Christmas, George Bailey (1997 PBS production of the radio play with Bill Pullman), The Ref, The Christmas Card, Mickey's Christmas Carol, and on and on. I love Christmas movies and have quite a collection and watch them year round.

If it has to specifically be Christmas then I have to say "It's A Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart. But "Peter Pan" with Mary Martin and "Wizard of Oz" with Judy Garland are two of my all time favs to watch during the Thanksgiving & Christmas seasons.

Ideefixe, welcome to the forum and tell me about "Remember the Night", I don't know that one, but think I might have to look for it. Love both the actors in it.

I don't have any that I just have to see each year. I like most all of the ones mentioned by all of you. And even if it is just a bit sentimental--I keep the tissue box handy! LOL

Sounds like I'll be a definite minority on this question but I'll weigh in anyway.... Home Alone is my favorite Christmas movie (just the first one), closely followed by Charlie Brown Christmas. I guess I watched them so much over the years with my children that they have come to be synonymous with the season in my mind.

I love Miracle on 34th St. ( the original ) and a made for television movie called Smokey Mountain Christmas with Dolly Parton and the Walton's Homecoming.

A childhood favorite- White Christmas! My boys favorite that we watched every Christmas - A Christmas Story. Don't you love the leg lamp? Wow- what would we do with that?

Its hard to pick just one but would have to say Chritmas Vacation. I went to 4 christmases this weekend it was pretty good. Maybe it will become part of our holiday favorites.

Oh, Christmas movies... so many of them are wonderful!
However, I haven't a favorite one, just some of them that I particularly like since they remind me my childhood, when our family gathered together.

The first one is The Bishop's Wife: I remember having watched this movie, lying behind the sofa as I would have been in bed...

The second one is a French one (obviously) which in French is called "Santa Claus is a junk" - there has been an American remake that I did not appreciate at all: "Mixed Nuts" with Steve Martin (like this actor!) I think.

The third one is Dial Code Santa Claus (also French movie) and the last one that I've probably watched a THOUSAND TIMES is...

"National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation"

Chevy Chase is a wonderful actor! I really enjoy watching this movie!!!!

but my must see's every year are:

Prancer (just love Jessica Riggs!)
The Snowman (when we want all the kids to be quiet)
The Polar Express (the bell still rings for me :)

Another lurker chiming in. Though I love all of those mentioned, my favorite is Little Lord Fauntleroy with a very young Ricky Schroder.

For me, it's not a movie but a cartoon. I absolutely have to start the Christmas season with How the Grinch Stole Christmas (by the way I hate the movie and I love roast beast so much, I convinced my mother to have it instead of turkey for Thanksgiving).
