LOL. My first reaction was green bean casserole. Glad to see I'm not the only one because I know lots of people love it.

Cranberries. I hate them. And the green bean casserole and yams with mini marshmallows, yuck.

Cooked greens of any kind can not stand them.
I love sweet potatoes pretty much any way but not fond of the marshmallows type.
Some green bean casseroles I like.

I'm with the majority here...green bean casserole. In fact, make that ANYTHING that has canned soup in the recipe.

The sweet sweet potatoes and brussel sprouts! I love sweet potatoes that are simple baked, but hate the marshmallow gooey kind.

Ditto to the sweet potatoes, but I have to confess to serving green bean casserole with the Christmas beef, but not at Thanksgiving.

I like most holiday foods. Or if I don't eat them myself, I don't have a HATRED of them. I can't stand sweet potatoes at all, but I would make them for others to eat. Or candied squash (barf). I make it every year for others that enjoy it.

I don't like dessert either, but if there were none served it would be mutiny LOL!

OK, another thing that won't be on my table is most kinds of "congealed " salad dishes. So popular, I know....and always on my mother's table. Special concoctions for holidays had all kinds of stuff in them, but J-E-L-L-O was the backbone of her weekday dessert options.

They always remained untouched on my salad plate, forlorn and slowly dissolving. :-)

Green bean casserole. I used to make it and one day I decided I don't really like it so why do I make it. Probably because it's easy to make and I don't really like to cook. lol

We didn't used to eat the green bean casserole, but the kids had it someplace else and loved it so I make it now. Cranberries were never a custom for me, but if dh wants a can of that congealed stuff, we'll get it. I don't like pumpkin pie, but will buy one for everyone else. Basically, if I don't eat it, but someone else does, then it will be on the table.

Potato salad. My sis is getting divorced and the only thing I am glad about is the loss of potato salad at Thanksgiving. Don't get me wrong, her MIL makes fantastic potato salad!!!, truly, but it's it at every single holiday meal. Just didn't feel "right" for Thanksgiving/Christmas.

And they refuse to have mashed potatoes along with it (not that I could blame them, two russet potato dishes? nope), so for years, unless I brought them, they didn't exist. So glad to have real mashed potatoes with real gravy. Ah.

This is a fun thread! I'm hosting Thanksgiving this year and the only thing that has specifically been requested is green bean casserole. :) I'm going to make a homemade version and hopefully it will be good!

I also won't serve any sides with meat in them. I'm buying a premade turkey/ham and some gravy for the meat eaters but everything else will be vegetarian so I get to have it all without worrying about something using chicken broth, etc.

My sister made the green bean casserole, but always added about 8-12 oz of shredded swiss cheese.. yum... But brussel sprouts will never see the light of day on my Turkey Table.

I hate the green bean casserole also. I love green beans, I think it is the soup and the nasty excuse for onions they use.

We never really had sweet potatoes/yams, but friends had the ones with marshmallows. Yuck. The past 3 years my brother has made sweet potatoes with a butter, brown sugar, and whiskey sauce. To die for. One of the most delicious items ever. So tasty!

I used to lovecranberry relish (raw) but hated cranberry sauce (cooked). Now I like them both.

Oh, and it is were up to me, no pecans! Yuck!

I don't like sweet potatoes.

I avoid anything made with canned soup. I also don't like cooked carrots.

Here in the deep south we don't have stuffing with our turkey - it has to be cornbread dressing. I personally like both but my family would be disappointed if I didn't make their favorite dressing.

Cranberry salad with sour cream/marshmallow dressing. My mom still makes it....I pass it on gladly.

Cheesecake...any kind. Cant eat it.

Several years ago, we had Thanksgiving with some dear friends and one of their 'specialties' was a brown sugar and bourbon sweet potato dish. It almost put me off sweet potatoes entirely!

Isn't it funny how we often have different likes and dislikes?

Some people like potato salad! Don't think that's crazy, even for a holiday meal.

I love aspic especially in the summer. I use my mother's recipe.

Guess if I was having a holiday meal, what would NOT be on my table would be bread dressing. I would eat it, but rest of family wouldn't.

I don't host Thanksgiving. I do have a couple of hints.
If you don't think you like cranberries, try cooking fresh ones and instead of the water, add 1/2 OJ and 1/2 water. As soon as the cranberries are done and you take them off the stove, add 2 T Grand Marnier. YUM.
Up until last year I didn't think I liked brussel sprouts. A friend told me to buy them fresh, not frozen, take off the outer leaves, cut them in half and saute in butter and garlic. You can also roast them. Yummy. Now I love them.

I like a baked sweet potato but I will never make one of those sickeningly sweet dishes of them, my husband won't touch them in any form. Won't have anything cranberry. I will have green beans though and maybe even that dreaded casserole which my husband and I both love!

Will I be banned for admitting I like green bean casserole? I didn't think I did, but had it at my SisIL's at Easter. I just took a bite or two and ended up going back for seconds.

What won't be on my table is oyster dressing. Mainly because nobody would eat it. Mother always made it for daddy. I made it when Harry's son was alive because he'd eat the whole casserole :-)

Well, I like just about everything that most of you have posted, except anchovies, never heard of anyone having that for a holiday meal but to each his own, and the hated green bean casserole. Love green beans but fixed with onion, bacon, or ham. Would not be Thanksgiving with out candied sweet potatoes for all of our family.

rhizo, you can use frozen green beans in that recipe - just let them completely thaw and come to room temp.

I agree with all of you who doesn't care for the green bean casserole that so many people like. The first time I ate it a co-worker brought it to an office potluck. When I tasted it I could not believe how awful it was and wondered why so many people raved about it. But many in out group loved it and asked him to bring it to all of our potlucks afterward. Needless to, I never ate any of his offering again.

Thanks, Walnut...I might try that recipe. I do like creamy recipes for green beans and this one is a little more interesting than my own cream sauce with beans and mushrooms.

I had to laugh at the remarks about green bean casserole. I remember when it was the "new" rage and everybody made and liked it Too much of a "good thing" now?

I haven't cooked a whole Thanksgiving dinner for I believe 3 three years now. My DGD loves to do it, and I love to let her. I buy the turkey, and bring home a lot of it. I do miss the cornbread dressing and giblet gravy!

Onions were mentioned. Here is my favorite onion recipe.

PARTY ONIONS

2 pounds small or medium white onions, quartered
5 Tbls butter or margarine
3 Tbls all-purpose flour
1 cup water
1 Tbls brown sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
dash pepper
ý tsp paprika
2 Tbls slivered almonds, toasted

Cook onions, covered, in small amount of boiling salted water til tender, 25-30 minutes. Drain well. Arrange in 1-quart casserole. In saucepan, melt butter, blend in flour. Stir in water, brown sugar, salt, Worcestershire and pepper. Cook til mixture thickens slightly and bubbles. Pour over onions in casserole. Sprinkle with paprika. Cover and bake at 375ð for 20 minutes. Just before serving, sprinkle with toasted almonds. Makes 5-6 servings.

Enjoy what ever you have for Thanksgiving, and don't forget to give thanks for it!

Macroni salads--but I used to put on the ""traditional"" Thanksgiving dinner/supper for year after my grandparents had to give it up. All my relatives and friends brought something--lots of good memories.

I am very surprised that so many hate green bean casserole. My kids really like it. And I do too.

No pecan pie for me. Sickeningly sweet, syrupy middle is more than I can stomach. I can't even look at it. I think the texture, even more than the taste, turns me off.

Creamed onions, I hate the look, slimy feel and taste. But I love everything else-the turkey, gravy,cranberry, all other vegetables, and- of course- all the desserts!

I too like a non-traditional meal every now and again, but after 20 years of never having mashed potatoes and gravy, I'm very glad to have a traditional meal. Hurray! Maybe next year, I'll be up for non-traditional again. Nothing wrong with potato salad. It's just non-stop potato salad and to the exclusion of what anyone else wants, if you catch my drift...

Glenda, I was talking to my DSisIL last weekend and was surprised to hear she had never heard of mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving until they came to our house. She said they always had rice. Funny that Harry never mentioned it to me.

Not all green bean casseroles are created equal. I have had tasty ones and others that were slick messes.

We will not be serving gooped-up sweet potatoes. Maybe roasted ones with a little olive oil and sea salt, but not with sugars, nuts and marshmallows.

Brussel sprouts in any form, ever.

I have made the dreaded green bean casserole in the past, but now would probably steer clear of it, or at least make a better/healthier re-imagining of it. The big problem with it, (IMHO) is that it is usually made from canned green beans, which are in and of themselves squishy and flavorless. I have made a similar dish in the past using fresh broccoli, cream of mushroom soup, those fried onions things, and a topping of shredded cheddar that was much better tasting.

Also last year I made a new dish I got from someone here at GW, called Fiery Sweet Potatoes, with coconut milk, caramelized carrots, thai curry paste, and brown sugar added to the freshly cooked sweet potatoes.

My one big pet peeve is Yams. Not because I have anything against yams, but because in every case what they are calling "yams" are in fact sweet potatoes.

Sweet Potato Pudding

3 lbs. sweet potatoes, peeled and mashed (canned is OK)
3/4 cup apple cider
1/4 teaspoon each, cinnamon and nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup butter

Bake at 350F 30 minutes in a casserole.
If spooned into orange cups, heat 20 minutes.

Only fresh green beans with butter and perhaps some chopped cranberries.

Sausage dressing -- in casserole, not in turkey cavity. And plenty of homemade gravy. Sometimes whipped potatoes, too.

I also have a sour cherry/sherry mold that's tart, not sickly sweet.

No pecan pie will ever grace my table.

What is that expression, "One man's feast is another man's poison"? Something like that.
I had that green bean casserole many years ago and loved it. I think I even made it a couple of times. Then a few years ago SIL made it and I hated it. Last night my DD told me she wanted to bring it for TG. Her MIL makes it and she loves it. Could it be that there are different recipes? Or is it fresh v. frozen v. canned v. french cut beans that makes the difference. Does anyone make it with fresh green beans?
