I'm Shocked - Watching the News

I was just watching our local news and just found out my 2nd cousin Scott was killed in a vehicle accident last night in the county. I just heard my last name and it took me a few seconds to register it wasn't one of my nephews - I kind of went numb.

Just the other day I received a telephone call for Scott, I am the first name in the phone book with my last name but we are all related so I get a lot of calls for family members.

Just about a year ago, Scott's Aunt, my cousin Caroline passed away so this is the second death in this family in a short time.

I called one my cousin's when I had my flood for advice and his wife said "I hope this isn't one of those calls" meaning we only seem to contact each other when someone has died in the family. Now one of her family member's has died.

I didn't really know Scott as an adult just when he was a kid at our family reunions and visiting my Grandpa's. I only see him at family funerals.

I've always dreaded hearing my last name on the news for something like this. This is a sad loss for our family.

Actually, I should clarify that, 99.9% of the time, I also use my check card and don't spend money unless I have it but am finding more and more reasons to keep a small balance on a prepaid card, just for this reason. Safer to have paypal and eBay tied to a prepaid card with little extra funds on it. I also have most things automatically withdrawn to pay bills. Stacy you aren't the only one who forgets to pay. Has nothing to do with having the money or not, the month just slips by so fast. But for an example of getting phished, I guess that's what you'd call this: I use FireFox, Gmail, AVG, Spybot etc., all the supposedly geeky software to keep one safe online. A couple of months ago I followed a link via the forum to another forum that I've visited in the past, but have never contributed to, and never went farther than the home page, so never clicked any links even on the other site, within 2 minutes I had a bounced email show up in my email box from a commercial orchid grower. Now, I followed no links on the site, use a different email address on GW rather than my private one and my email address was somehow phished. Last I looked, my router had all unnecessary ports locked down. What got through? For the record, I've never had any spam come through the email account I use for GW. It could be a coincidence, but it certainly looks like just visiting that site, somehow my email was compromised. I'm pretty savvy about this stuff, so trust me when I say this was scary. I don't, however, store my bank username and password, it's the only one I don't save. You just can't be too careful anymore. I conduct just about all business, other than grocery shopping, online but sometimes even I'm tempted to become a luddite. Scott, still sorry to hear about this and your mother. I'm a BC survivor, but by the grace of god, go I. There are a few of us here that have battled that devil, very young too.

My friend in Detroit had a pet store and with the moartality being as high as it is, the owner I know has to at least double the wholesale price to make a profit, and cover the losses from fish, that die on the way and also soon after delivery and before they're sold. I guess it's almost the same for other pets as well. I'm still wondering obout that on-line ordering, since I think it's a similar situation, where the price is high , but up to a certain point you can order many more fish for the same shipping price , provided they're not large fish. I guess in a sense the shipping direct wouldnt' be that different than many fish store owners get , since I know my friend had to order his fish direct from the breeders in Florida or wherever they came from and he'd have to drive a long ways to the airport to pick them up at the airport , I guess. I imagine though in some large cities the retailers might have local wholesalers to buy from??? I am thinking about "Freecycle" to locate possibly even a free aquarium, and setup, but I can't seem to get back on their site, and it's maybe a matter of fogetting my right memebership name and password. Seems I have so many different ones nowdays I can't remember them all sometimes, and I must start writing them down. I've heard of numerous people , who for various reasons decide not to continue their aquarium hobby and then just give away all their equipment and aquariums etc. I'd be willing to pay for a used one, but is there a problem with disease or "sterilizing' all that old equipment??

The "migrants" don't show up until late February/early March. In my old apartment before I had wintering hummers, The first migrant would appear on March 5th or close to there every year. I also believe he would stay the summer. Unfortunately, there is still a lot to be discovered about Florida's Ruby-throated populations. I emphasized migrants because there will be some roaming of birds throughout the winter due to weather events and changes in food sources so it may appear that one has migrated in earlier. I have found a nest over the Hillsborough River during the last week of March. That is likely the earliest we would expect to find one but, like I said, there's still plenty we don't know. The Allen's returned to Joe's yard a couple of days ago. I haven't heard for sure if he's still around but I assume he is. Hummingbirds don't "pair up". They don't even share a territory although they may share adjoining territories so you could see both male and females during the breeding season. They get together just long enough to do the deed and then the female does everything else. The male moves on the defend his territory and seek out other rendezvous. Winter is a little different, when food is scarce and feeders are offered, they will shrink their territories and put up with other birds once they've battled a while and gained each other's respect. I seem to be losing birds as it warms up. Twenty birds (territories) was probably too much for my small 1/3 acre yard. It was fun while it lasted. I've still got at least ten but they don't fight at all and tend to sit quietly and are less noticed.

Well I am one who wouldn't miss any of these admission-charging stores. I had a membership for several years but quit. Just didn't make sense. Could get better deals elsewhere and not go through the hassles. It just plain irritates me to have to PAY the place to walk in there, then if you buy something you stand in line for 45 min, then have to walk 10 feet and check out again to leave! Gotta give old Sam Walton credit though, he cashed in on people's greed and stupidity. People will complain about non-union and everything with a pocket full of Walmart reciepts! Tell them they're getting a deal and you can charge them anything. Some believe they actually NEED a 5 gallon pail of peanut butter on the shelf! And you don't even have to give them a bag or help them carry it out! He definitely changed retail. Not for the "good", in my opinion, but he definitely changed it forever. (shaking head in disbelief...)

This is terrible. I am sorry for this. Sympathy and prayers to all your family. Remember in the 60's when there was a fire at Cape Canaveral and three astronauts were killed? I went to school with a boy with the same last name as one of the astronauts, turned out it was his uncle.

Thanks. I just called my brother Donald who I have heard nothing from since the week after my Mom died. I asked him about Scott and he said it was our 2nd cousin Scott's son who was killed. His name was Scott also. My cousin Gary's Grandson.

Donald said he went over to Gary's today to work on Gary's classic car and he was unaware of the tragedy. Donald said young Scott was going to move out to BC and my nephew Kelly was going to get him a job.

I had a nice chat with my brother and he was shocked that it was 6 years since he talked to me. Not that I haven't contacted him or left messages for him to call me with his wife during those years. Hopefully he realizes how quickly life can be taken away and you need to stay in touch with those you grew up with and who love you. I seem to be the only one in my family that keeps in touch with each and everyone of my family members.

Wouldn't you hate that one of your siblings passed away and for know good reason you haven't been in touch and missed out on knowing your brother or sister or their families. I reminded my brother of that.

I'm sorry for you and your family. What a terrible way to find out any death. My thoughts and prayers to your families.
So glad you reconnected with your brother. Stay in touch with him, even if you have to keep reminding him. It's worth it.
Once again I am very sorry for your familys' loss.

Thank you all.

I'm such a family oriented person and even though I didn't know young Scott except meeting him once it s still a shock and I feel really bad for his family.

He and a friend were driving on a slick county road on Monday night around 9:00 pm. Witnesses said the pickup truck was speeding and it lost control and went into a ditch. The driver was Scott's friend who died from his injuries yesterday. Both boys were ejected from the vehicle and Scott was thrown about 40 metres and killed instantly.

I can't imagine what his parents and siblings are going through.

Since I am the first one of my family listed in the phone book I have been getting calls, one from the CBC looking to talk to a family member. I told them they would have to talk to a closer family member than myself.

I believe there is a Facebook tribute up but I can't access it until my DSL gets hooked up sometime today.
