That is a shock!

Sam's and Super WalMart are planning to build new stores (to replace the old ones) in our city. The land was cleared last summer and the building is to begin this Spring.

I would hate to have those close.

Do you have Costco in the area? I wonder if there was already competition for that type of store.

Yep, Costco is here as well. They do a better business than Sam's but we really preferred Sam's.

Is the one in Pickering closing? I wouldn't be surprised as there is a Costco a few minutes down the road. My sister would be a very happy camper if Lowe's went in there.

What a shame! I don't have a Sam's membership any more, since I live over 400 miles from the nearest one, but I ALWAYS had a membership when I lived in MN.

Barbara, Yes the one in Pickering is closing. Vaughan, all the stores. Lowes has their bid in for some of the stores.

They may as well here for no more that goes there anymore. You really have to watch what your buying to come out ahead. I use to get the lg. container of electrasol dish washer soap and it's now sold at Walmart for same size and price.

We need our Sam's! I'd be in mourning if ours closed. It's always busy, so I don't think there's much chance of that!

Wow, I was worried for a minute! We love Sam's. Ours is always pretty busy.

Canadians take note: We went to Sam's today, just to get a few things that we normally buy. The store is closing on Sunday. We were hard-pressed to get a parking spot, and all the check-out lineups were all the way to the back of the store!

We got some real bargains though. Bittersweet. We got milk for $2.71 (4 litres) when the regular price is $3.88. My kitty litter is regularly $7.44 and we got it for $5.58. All the meat, produce and dairy was discounted. We picked up some more back ribs.
Paper towels regularly $14, were $11. We're going back on the 9th when it re-opens for a week of clearance sales.

Well I am one who wouldn't miss any of these admission-charging stores. I had a membership for several years but quit. Just didn't make sense. Could get better deals elsewhere and not go through the hassles. It just plain irritates me to have to PAY the place to walk in there, then if you buy something you stand in line for 45 min, then have to walk 10 feet and check out again to leave!

Gotta give old Sam Walton credit though, he cashed in on people's greed and stupidity. People will complain about non-union and everything with a pocket full of Walmart reciepts! Tell them they're getting a deal and you can charge them anything. Some believe they actually NEED a 5 gallon pail of peanut butter on the shelf! And you don't even have to give them a bag or help them carry it out! He definitely changed retail. Not for the "good", in my opinion, but he definitely changed it forever.

They are refunding memberships. Ours didn't get renewed. It was due in January, and we were never asked to renew it at the till.

Cynic, I only bought stuff that could store a long time...paper products, etc. Meat for the freezer. Cat food and litter. CD cases. There are only the 2 of us, so I didn't buy a gallon of mayonnaise, etc. But I will still miss this store.
Walmart sells kitty litter, but it's much more expensive for their Kitty Select, than the Members Mark. It will be sorely missed.

Cynic, we agree with you--somehow the idea of paying for the privilege of shopping at a store just doesn't appeal to us. We did visit a Sam's Club once with one of those courtesy passes that "allows" you to look around and even buy (with a 10% markup on the price).
We found the selection to be average and the prices comparable to the grocery and other stores that we frequent. We were not impressed.
