In my opinion, this is the best recipe for no-bake cookies. I just made these a few days ago and they are still wonderful, 4 days later.

You got it, Joanie. My son's mother-in-law has the broken Viking oven. She cooks pasta, and according to her daughter, doesn't use an oven. Guess she doesn't make even lasagna. So when they go to her parents' home at the holidays, they can't bake anything. While they like to do the cooking while they are there, the stove limits their options. Imagine making a Thanksgiving dinner with no oven. I think they go over to relatives for that meal.

My son introduced his then girl friend to all sorts of foods while they were dating, and then they started cooking together. They are quite a team in the kitchen now. But I guess her mom doesn't cook much.

This is the son who as a 10 year old, looked at his plate, saw something new being served, and demanded, "Mother, have you been reading cook books again?!!" He was exposed to many foods at home, unlike so many of his friends. Then he moved to a metropolitan area after graduating and fell in love with all sorts of cuisines. Now he introduces us to some foods. Moreover, he has gotten interested in the mixed cocktails of the 30s and 40s, so he usually prepares a special cocktail for all of us prior to our holiday and birthday meals.

My aunt has been making the version without peanut butter that Kayjones linked for years. They are my favorite cookie.

They could also make fudge and other candies that are cooked on the stovetop.

If the Viking doesn't work, maybe the mil could replace her range with a cheaper, used range from a used appliance store or a garage or estate sale or craigslist or maybe son & dil could buy one for her.

As much nonsense as there is on craigslist, sometimes you can get good stuff;
a friend bought a less-than-1-year-old fridge, micro, & range for $1000;
the seller had just bought the house & didn't like stainless steel!

Perhaps son and DIL should consider buying her parents a Breville toaster oven for Christmas and give it to them early. LOL

The only no bake cookie recipe I have is the Christmas wreath one. Oh, and I just thought of Rosettes or Pizzells but you need a rosette iron or a Pizzell iron for both of those.

I think they are called Haystacks. Butterscotch chips melted, and you stir in chow mein noodles and peanuts.

I'm a huge fan of no bakes also.

All of you are thinking like me. I would be lost without an oven. I have double ovens, and I would be lost without both of them, especially for family dinners.

But momma is just fine and does not want any oven. I suggested the kids pay to repair it as a Christmas gift, and was told that she would not be interested. Sooooooo

A friend was over last Christmas while I was doing a bunch of cookies for a cookie exchange and she jumped in to help. She is from Newfoundland and made Snowballs. I had to beg her to take them home after having three. They are so good. I have since made this version and will be again this week. Okay - I get it now - not the foodies who have no oven. Now I'm wondering why someone who has no need for an oven would buy a Viking range. Maybe it was in the house when they moved in.

Ahh, 3js, you remind me of the family snowball recipe that originated with my aunt. Totally different ingredients, and no chocolate, white throughout, nobake. I love them. But I don't think they ever impressed this son. Ingredients off the top of my head are cut up marshmallows, whipped cream, crushed pineapple, coconut.

I think a cookie needs to be baked to be a cookie. Otherwise, what you're describing are probably confections or candies.

As for the dead oven, when they sell the house, they'll probably have to fix it, replace it, or give the buyers a price reduction to do so.

Why not spend the same money now and have it to use?
