My grandson has a baby!

15 years old and it's his turn to take home "the baby" from school and tend to it. His time started today.

I called him a few minutes ago, and he said he could only talk until 4, as that is when "the baby" wakes up.

So I got a quick hello and gotta go!

Keep us in the loop, on how "dad" is handling this. Oh, and don't forget to have him over, and to introduce you to the baby. :)

Isn't this the best idea ever? OTOH, maybe it's why some 'educated' people don't start their families until it's almost too late!

I think you can assert your own rules at your house. My kids do have rules at home. But there are still some different rules at Grandma's. My mom has a lot of little breakables at her house and would not just put them up for the grandkids. She insisted they be taught not to touch them. And darn it if my kids didn't figure out that Grandma just has some rules we don't have at home. At home, we just don't have little breakables setting around to tempt them. Sometimes the kids just test grandma, see how much she's spoil them. One visit when my DS was about 4 he got out some toys and didn't pick them up the first time my mom asked him to. He walked away and went to do something else. My mom picked up the toys and put them in her closet, gone. DS came back, wanted the toys again and my mom said "Sorry, you didn't put them away. So I did, and now you don't have them anymore. Next time, you should put toys away when you're done." You bet he didn't mess with grandma again. DH's parents are positively anal, they get truly upset if the kids touch the walls or windows. Now at home I'd be insane if I tried to keep 4 kids from ever touching walls! But at that Grandma's, they know and follow the rule. (We don't actually visit there often, it's stressful for everyone to be that extreme.) But I appreciate that the grandmothers set rules at their house too, instead of the stories I hear of grandmothers who undermine parents' rules by living by "anything goes at grandmas." I would rather they support me in setting expectations of behavior. At someone else's house, their rules trump mom and dad's. My point is, kids learn that there are different expectations in different places. Heck, my own DD is a model student at school and her teachers do not believe that she ever talks back to me! LOL. Does your grandson have behavior issues at school? If not, then you know he can respond to a change of rules/expectations in different environments. You could work your concerns into conversation with the boy's parents. In fact, I think you should do so with caution, but do it. Maybe they are concerned too and would appreciate the support and listening ear. You could model to them that he can in fact respect your rules, so he can learn to respect theirs to if they assert them. Try to voice your suggestions in a way of "He can learn to do this" instead of "He doesn't, you don't make him..." Don't make it criticism. Make it clear what can be gained by expecting more of his behavior: success in school, better friendships, responsibility builds confidence, people will trust him. He will be a happier kid in the long run if he is taught to respect others. That is what this really comes down to. It isn't just about obeying rules superficially. It is about realizing how his behavior affects others, and how that in turn affects how they feel about him. I have used the line with my kids, "Your friends/people/grandma and grandpa don't like it when you act like that. It's not fun and it makes them feel sad/angry/tired." You can work on establishing the boudaries and expectations at your house when your grandson is there. Next time, say to HIM, "You said something last visit that I did not like." Talk about it, ask if he meant it, get his perspective, listen to what he thinks about his behavior. Tell him he should not talk to you like that again, or about his parents like that again. State the rules of picking up after himself at your house and that you know he can do that. Even ask him to help with other tasks, like setting the table. Tell him how helpful he is and praise his contributions as being grown up. It will make him feel so much better than the out of control tantrums and not knowing who is really in charge. Reward him with your attention when he respects you, but not when he doesn't. You can do this between the two of you. He is old enough to talk about it with you. It is great if you can get his parents on board. But if if they can't/won't enforce it at home, you can get his cooperation at your house. You can just speak to him straight forward, tell him you and he will both be happier when you respect each other instead of argue and get angry at each other. Let him know you're there to help him be his best self, which is NOT tantrums. Make him feel proud of himself when he shows respect for you and others. Make it feel better to him to behave respectfully than to have a fit to get his way. You CAN expect him to follow your rules at your house and treat you with respect regardless of what his parents let him get away with. You CAN show your support to his parents by listening and letting them know you care about your grandson and their family. Sorry, that got much longer than I intended, it rambled some. I thought about deleting and trying it shorter. But I'm leaving it as it is, I want to say it all. ;o)

DISCLAIMER: Be advised that these statements are the views of one person who is NOT an expert in the field of child behavior. These are opinions only. Autism is tough to deal with. I've been though this myself with my first born. Back when he came down with the 'troubles', not as much was known about autism and related diseases. We now beleive that he was mis-labeled because he did finally improve, and true autistics are not supposed to get better according to the profession, but now they find that it is not all black and white, but many shades of gray. There is no set formula for diagnosis. For this reason, doctors are reluctant to hang the label "autistic" too early on a child. And for these reason, early diagnosis is difficult. I can only offer clues based on my experience: 1. Infants will seek out an adult's face when they are nursing. In the first month or so, it is the mother's face because this is the one in focus. (Infants are born near sighted; focusing at a distance develops in the first few months.) After a month or more, a babe may look at the father or another adult when he is nursing. It will the face he can easily see while nursing. Anthropologists say this may be an inborn trait. A babe is most vulnerable when feeding and watches the face of a protective adult for signs of distress or danger. This trait is missing with autism. 2. The second trait is that many babies like to hear their parent hum a tune to relax them and help to settle down for a sleep. The autisitc babe bristles at any such attempt. However, if you have ever heard me hum a lulaby, you might bristle too, so I can not declare this trait as a proof. 3. The fear of heights and/or danger is missing. An example was if I was walking with my son in my arms and passed a stairwell, he'd lunge for the open stairwell. 4. The most telling trait happens at about 18 months when speech is developing. The child will begin to parrot several words, but in a few days, a new word will begin to be slurred and in a few days, it will become unintelligble. As the malady progresses, the time shortens from saying a new word to shoveling it into meaningless sounds. The time of frustration begins for both the parent and child. The child grunts a phrase and expects the parent to understand, and the parent becomes baffled bordering on the verge of anger. Both child and parent become angry internally. This is the period that requires great patience from the parent. This the period when the parent-child relationship can be damaged. There are other traits of autism that show when the disease is fully developed and these are fully described in the literature. Typical behaviors are 'twiddling', obsession with a repeated action, staring at an inanimate object, etc. I recommend that you toss out literature about popular ideas written from 1940 to maybe 1975. There was a turn-about in ideas at the end of this period therefore later findings were more helpful and accurate than the first publication. The first clinical diagnosis was based on a study of too few subjects and the subjects were not representative of the cross section of our population. It was a very skewed population of few affected children. A failed relationship between mother and child was blamed, and as a result, many mothers were wrongly blamed. This worsened the situation and tore families apart. Sadly, some mothers eventually were pushed into believeing they were 'bad'. There could have been a bad apple here and there, but that was a very small percentage. Because of this, I recommed that you stick with literature generated in the last 30 years and be aware that old ideas, particularily ideas saturated with finding blame, dies hard. Those old idea tended to color literature for a long after it was declared void. Great for your grandson on getting an A. I think they should have a couple dozen of these babies in every single high school in this country. Hopefully this program gets more funding to do just that. And hopefully the kids get the baby for at least a week. Glenda, I pray that someday, if and when I get grandbabies, that I will have the relationship with them that you have with your grandson. You two together remind me of how my mom and daughter were before my mom died. My daughter was only 11 at the time, but she still at 24 remembers her with such love and misses her so much. Almost as much as I miss her.

Looks like it is potted in glass container without drainage hole and what looks like a water retaining soil. That could be reason for rotting. Succulents need container with good drainage and fast draining mix...I have many stems like that and they do not rot; in pots with drainage holes and gritty mix. Here is one - offsets are probably too big by now:)It was beheaded, but I may do it again. There are few offsets on top that are not clearly visible in photo from this angle. Your babies are too small to take off IMO. When bigger, just twist them off - they should separate freely.

Glenda, you just scared the livin' daylights out of me! Had to breathe a sigh of relief, I admit. Congratulations on your first non-great-grandchild. Whew!

That is a cool thing to do. Kids don't think about how hard it is to be a parent and it may be the best method of birth control ever, IMHO!

He's taking home ec and it's part of the requirements to take home the programmed baby doll for a spell.

I think having a "baby" at that age, even for a short time is an excellent idea.
I love being a grandma to real babies but would settle for a programmed one if it had been the only option.

MY GOODNESS, Glenda! That really made me start, picturing that handsome 15 year old you had with you on last cruise! Whew. Do you get to do 'baby shopping' for this school parenting project? That's what good grandma's do, you know. (unless you are a talented knitter/stitcher etc.

One of those babies saved a family's life last week because the child who took it home couldn't sleep for fear she would somehow not take proper care of the baby. Her uneasy sleep that night made her the one who heard a small pop in the other room. When she went to investigate she found the home on fire and got her family out in time.

A co-workers daughter had to take one of these home. Hers was very colicky and no one in the house could sleep becaue of the constant crying. My co-worker threw the baby in the trunk. When the teacher tried to argue that this is what babies do, the co-worker just said that she wouldn't be raising her daughter's baby. I guess the teacher gave her a different baby that was not so crank and let her take the baby home for two weekends verses a whole week.

I know that some people might not agree with that approach but I really couldn't blame her. We were working 10 hour days and she was on the road driving 4 hours a day. Plus she had 3 kids of her own (the mother not the student). After her experience I was really glad that my daughter didn't have to do this.

Our daughter had to bring home an uncooked egg and keep it whole for a few days (can't remember how many). They had to pay a babysitter if they had to leave the egg for any reason and of course make sure no one dropped it. :-)

Was going to ask if he will ask you to babysit! BTW, my grandson just left a few minutes ago. Mom had a late shift at the hospital and Dad was also working. I had Asher from 12:00 till 8:15. He's 2. I'm tired!

I remember the day my daughter brought home her "baby". Of course it's an assignment designed to teach how time consuming and troublesome a real baby is. Wish my nephew Timmy had heeded the lesson. His daughter is nearly 2.

Oh boy! I remember when my kids had to bring home "baby". They had the car seat and whole smear. It cried and you had to hold the key in it for "feeding". I can't remember everything but that darn kid was heavy to hold too! LOL It wasn't a light weight doll like Madison has, I think they filled it with sand! The kids found out that sitting in bed, holding a key in the baby's back was tough at 3am!

I was sure it was going to be a puppy. When you go shopping tomorrow, you should buy things for the baby and not PJR. You can always return it and give him the money later. That way he'll know having a baby affects you in more ways than you can imagine.

Glenda, one of my favorite episodes of Frazier was when Niles had like a 5 lb. sack of flour to treat like a baby. kinda scarey and funny at the same time. LOL

So what do they give the kids these days to make a lasting impression? Whatever it is, I agree it's a good approach to make them think.

Pool buddy told me this morning about his daughter having to take home an egg for a week. Never heard of that before Jodi mentioned.

Awesome concept! Especially for teenagers. I am 43 and still not ready to have kids!

Now I get what your other post was about, I couldn't figure out why he got an A for having a baby for one day and it cost $500!

To clarify, michelle, that is what the cost is for each baby for the school for the students to get a realization of what parenting is.

AND this is a learning activity in hopes of preventing teenage pregnacies. Understood?

GS is a sophomore in high school.
