I, too, was surprised at the lack of media attention. It was such a horrible day and week.

Yes - I was 13 years old. I heard the news as I was sitting at the kitchen table at my Aunt's house. I have the original newspaper called "The Blade', a newspaper from Toledo, Ohio, that gave as many details as were known at the time - such a stunned nation!

Having travelled around Saskatchewan, where I'd taken my seminary training, to churches, and a few schools, fraternal groups, etc. to tell of our work helping refugees get back on their feet after the Korean War, I'd visited with brother and wife (I'd married them, a couple of months earlier) and was setting out in my old car, in late afternoon, as the first snow of the year was starting to fall, for Iowa, where Sue'd spent a couple of months with her mom, dad, family and old friends.

Stopping for something in a small town a few miles down the road, I heard on the TV about some big event, that some major imoprtant groups were meeting in the U.S., and when I asked what the big news was and someone told me, I think that I said something like, "Gt out!", in disbelief.

I watched the funeral with Sue, our Bruce (2nd birthday three weeks earlier) and her Mom, at her Mom's house.

Daughter Kathryn was born on that date, a year later.

I was sitting in class in high school and the teacher wrote on the chalk board that the president was shot.

School was dismissed without calls to the parents. They didn't do that then.

I ran home and while out of breath told my mom the president was shot. She had no idea and turned on the television with the look of horror. I watched her face throughout the news to see if we were going to be alright.

My generation is not the target for honoring old news events, its preservation of our culture, our well-trusted values we gave to our children via our constitution and a slew of other things.

The Vietnam war and many other historical events are hardly taught in the schools anymore because the kids don't care and those topics do not appear but lightly on any school evaluation tests. Parents don't know that nor does that come up in school board meetings. If you ask a kid today which came first the Revolutionay War or the Civil War, they probably did not study it except to pass the test so wouldn't remember.

President Kennedy's Funeral is one of my first memories - I was 2 yrs old and I remember remember sitting on the couch with my Mom & Dad and seeing on TV people viewing his body in the capital building.

I was just out of High School, working at my first job - a keypuncher at an insurance company in Philadelphia.
We(there were about 80 keypunchers in one big room) were told that there would be a meeting with a union that wanted us to join.
But...then a guy ran in from the computer room and yelled that the President was shot. All work stopped. A few minutes later, we were told by out department manager that we could go home, but not until after the union meeting.

I (all of 18 years old) got up in front of my fellow workers and gave a passionate speech about not joining any union.

We went to the meeting, then went home to grieve - as by then we knew President Kennedy was dead.

I was surprised as well, it didn't hit me until I had to write the date, I remember it because it is my Gram's birthday.

ka wa - I have many early memories - Pres Kennedy's assassination puts them in time perspective. The problem is memories now! (not really)...

I am always surprised that it's never mentioned on the day it happened. It was the most traumatic event I ever went through up to that point and I will always remember every detail. I never left the couch for three days.

Although I have a lot of respect for JFK and am sort of a student of his assasination (the controversy is very interesting to me), I also think it's been so overblown over the years that it's ridiculous. It would go on for days and on the 22nd EVERYTHING was about JFK - you couldn't avoid it. Come on. Enough is enough. Remembering is fine. Obsessing is not. Teaching history is the job of the schools, not the media. I'm glad there was limited coverage. There's more going on in the world than an event 48 years ago albeit an important one. Now if they'll back off from Elvis a bit too, it'd be great.

I watched the documentary they aired about Jackie, and found her reminiscences interesting. Didn't see the news shows, so didn't know it wasn't emphasized.

I was in Jr. High., a twelve-year-old. Our principal announced on the all-call system that the president had been shot. During our lunch break we heard through the grapevine that he had died. I couldn't finish eating. Many students and teachers were crying throughout the afternoon.

After I went home we kept the TV on for days. Were watching a live broadcast when Oswald was shot by Ruby. Saw JFK's funeral with his wife and children standing by the coffin. I don't really need to see those images again, but it should never be forgotten.

I was a little over a year old so no memories here.

I have to disagree with you Ellie, at least here in our school. My exchange student was struggling with our history last trimester. Last year, our German exchange student was in tears because her history teacher told the class that the Nazis were inhuman because of what they did during WWII. I didn't find out until later when her teacher called me to see if she was ok. I was puzzled because he didn't explain why she wouldn't be. When I asked her about it after she got home, that's when she told me she was ashamed of what the Germans did and thought everyone would think she was just like the Nazis.

I'm reading a book by Stephen King about JFKs assassination. It's fiction, of course, but it's very interesting and I'm now wanting to Google Lee Harvey Oswald and his wife's name to see if some of the things King has written are actually true. I also want to know what happened to his wife...did she stay in the U.S.? What about their kids? I also didn't know that he attempted to kill some politician before he shot the president...or is that King's story?

I wondered the same thing ..his kids would be almost 50 years old. I think he was only 23 when he killed the president. Years go by fast but looking at old footage, it seems so very long ago.
