I've only had one broken toe and it did slim down, but I don't recall how long it took. Couldn't have been too long or that would have stuck in my mind.

Sciatic pain does travel across the buttock, then down the back of the thigh. When it gets to the knee, the pathway changes and it goes down the outside of the calf, then at the ankle it crosses over to the top of the foot.

The title of your post sounds like the name of a band. A band I really don't think I'd enjoy listening too. :-)

I broke a pinky finger about ten years ago right at the second joint. It it still larger than the other pinky, plus when it is as straight as possible it still has about 15 degrees of bend.

I've had more than one broken toe...yes, painful. Just like another broken bone, except mine were not bandaged or 'set'. My little ones are still fat, but do not hurt. Hope the thigh pain is just sympathy and will go away quickly. Rest!

I have broken several of my toes during different adventures in my life... They usually are swollen / puffy for several weeks to a month, but all have gone back to normal!

I don't know about the thigh pain, but hope the chiro can help :(

A coincidence that it might be this but your I T Band (in your leg) starts on the outside of your hip, runs down and crosses over above your knee to the outside of it. Whatever you did to hurt your toe may be part of your thigh issue. It could also be that you pulled a groin muscle. I did that this past spring and now I have limited range of motion moving my leg out to the side. I have been told I have a tight hip flexor. I have to be careful when I step to the right with my foot at an angle. The same pain I had when I hurt it returns. Deep tissue massage hurt like the dickens but feels good in the long run and helps alot. The massage therapist works the groin muscle and the hip flexors, even the back of the thigh. Its all connected.

Remembering the pain of breaking my toe....my mother left a portable sewing machine sitting on the floor in her bedroom, and I came around a corner, though the door, barefoot, hit my little toe on the sewing machine cover. Horrific pain. But it was so long ago, I don't remember how long it stayed swollen. Hope the swelling goes away quickly and you find out about the pain in hour thigh.

I would check with your doc about the pain in your thigh. I'd be worried about a blood clot/deep vein thrombosis especially if your broken toe has affected your mobility.

Taking Bromelain (an extract of pineapple) is a great way to reduce puffiness from injury or surgery.

jewel, like most unregulated supplements, there's apparently no evidence suggesting that bromelain has any medical usefulness. The NIH cites one study that found bromelain was ineffective for preventing muscle soreness after exercise and says that evidence is lacking to support a claim of any other positive benefit.

Snidely, I so agree with you. I have lupus and Sjogren's. Well intentioned folks are always suggesting I take this supplement and/or eat this food and I will be cured. One should be very cautious, most of the miracle cures are unfounded and some can be downright dangerous. I always follow the money trail first when researching these claims. Coconut oil is a current fad miracle cure for whatever ails you. The money trail on that one is a fun research project. The money trail led me to a Christian Right organization and a failed insurance salesman! :)

Snidely -- I have personal experience in using Bromelain with excellent results for reducing swelling from surgical soft-tissue trauma. I did not purport that it has any effect on preventing muscle soreness. It has no analgesic properties. My recommendation of Bromelain is for swelling only. YMMV.

I thought the thigh thing was maybe a pinched nerve. At any rate, it's gone and good riddance. I've been bending my back backwards and I feel better. Thanks all.

The NIH page I linked summarizes the findings of formal studies, what is and isn't known. In this particular case, it suggests that evidence of effectiveness is inadequate or lacking.

With your experience and that of others, there's no way to know what might have happened to you without ingesting this substance. Would your healing have been the same? Would it have been quicker? Was there some effect from the tea you normally drink? You see what I mean, all the extraneous factors are properly managed in studies so that results are focused and understandable. The experience of one or even several people isn't useful.

I'm happy for you, but I find an NIH assessment of "no demonstrated benefit" more persuasive. And unsurprising, the real stories for so many supplements people recommend are similar.

So you question the effectiveness. Fine by me.

Deeby -- you can get the same result from eating fresh pineapple; if you get sick of it or can't get fresh pineapple where you live, Bromelain is the supplement equivalent.
