Is There Anything Smelling Good Coming From Your Oven?

Right now all I can smell are apple dumplings! I have a big pan of them, it must be 10 x 15. Do you have a good aroma coming from your oven? Are you baking?

not baking, but I have carcass simmering on the stove for soup tomorrow. It smells really good!

I just finished 5 different scents of candles..

I would assume that this is coming from the plastic(pvc)pipe the vents to the outside?It is possible that you could get a smell as this is the exhaust gases from the furnace.It is always a good idea to have carbon monoxide detectors in sleeping areas,and really on all floor levels.It is better to get the plug-in kind,that plug into wall outlets...

Here's the recipe I use...First Time I made it as is...second time I made a triple batch and it almost filled a 5 gallon bucket which sits by my washing machine! This is NOT my recipe, but one I copied from a site by googling it.. It works and that is what I was after! Laundry Soap You will need 3 basic ingredients; a soap of some sort, washing soda and borax. The Soap: The most typical type of soap to use is Fels Naptha. It is an old-fashioned type of soap usually found in the laundry aisle. The other options for soap are Ivory or another brand called, Zote. Any of these will work. I use my own homemade soap and find it works quite well. If you use Ivory or your own homemade soap you will need to use the whole bar. Washing Soda: This is not to be confused with baking soda. They are not the same thing. Washing soda is sodium carbonate or soda ash (baking soda is sodium bicarbonate). It is a white powder. Its purpose is to help remove dirt and orders. The brand to look for is Arm & Hammer Washing Soda. I find it in the laundry section of my grocery store. Many people have a hard time finding this locally. I know you can purchase it on-line, even through Amazon.com. I would also suggest asking your grocery store manager if it would be possible for the store to get it for you. Borax: Borax is a naturally occurring mineral: Sodium Borate. It is a white powder. Its purpose is as a laundry whitener and deodorizer. The brand to look for is 20 Mule Team. It comes in a 76 oz. box. You should be able to locate this in the laundry detergent aisle. Again as with the washing soda, if you cannot find it ask you store manager or look online. The Recipe Now that you have assembled all the needed ingredients here is the recipe: Homemade Laundry Soap 1/3 bar Fels Naptha or other type of soap, as listed above Â½ cup washing soda Â½ cup borax powder You will also need a small bucket, about 2 gallon size~ Grate the soap and put it in a sauce pan. Add 6 cups water and heat it until the soap melts. Add the washing soda and the borax and stir until it is dissolved. Remove from heat. Pour 4 cups hot water into the bucket. Now add your soap mixture and stir. Now add 1 gallon plus 6 cups of water and stir. Let the soap sit for about 24 hours and it will gel. You use Â½ cup per load. Optional: If you want your soap to have some sort of scent you can scent this with Â½ to 1 oz. of essential oil or fragrance oil of your choice. My favorite scent is orange essential oil. But is it Really Less Expensive? Is the laundry detergent a cost saver? How do the numbers on this add up? Well I am a person who likes to know what I am spending and if my efforts save me in one way or another. This is one of the areas that I wanted to know if I was actually saving money. We do a lot of laundry and I make double batches of this soap and knowing that the time spent doing this was a savings for my family was important to me. Here are my calculations: The cost of making the above recipe of laundry soap was .71 cents. That was amazing to me! With this 2 gallon size recipe you will have enough to do 64 loads of laundry. That translates to about .01 cent a load. some also posted this site for a presoaking recipe for extra dirty clothes..here it is.

The "trap" in the drain is this dipsy-doodle just below the drain opening. It traps a small quantity of water in it which acts as a seal to prevent sewer gas from coming up though the drain. Even if it doesn't drain as well as it should, that "trap" should still hold water and prevent gas from coming up. Suspect separate issue. Sometimes well water has stuff in that is affected by being heated. If you say this is something you notice only when hot-water tap is opened, I would be suspicious of something like that. Wish I could smell what you're smelling. These odors are almost always characteristic of the source. If you have access to a more experienced person to do the smelling, perhaps you could learn something that way.

Hello everyone, thank you for your responses. That's an interesting point about hybridization, I guess hybrids are being developed for their smell when it comes to home gardening, but the longevity of the flower is the focus for more commercial hybrids that are grown abroad and have to still be good looking after travelling thousands of miles. So far I have found that smell is not nearly as important as appearance for people who buy flowers, which surprised me a bit. People also said they would not necessarily buy flowers more often if they smelled better. It's all very interesting. I would like to get some more responses to build a stronger case and adapt the project if needed, so if you could please forward the link to the people you know who might be interested in the subject I would be very grateful! Yes, baked sweet potato chips. I sprinkled one tray with just salt & pepper, and the other with garam masala, an Indian spice blend. That second tray is making the house smell wonderful.

Heck no! I'm just getting around to putting all the seldom-used dishes away and mopping the floor, something I don't really do anymore because of my back. But the house cleaners won't be here for three weeks and my piddly wet paper towel swished around on the floor by my foot won't cut it right now. I just did half and will do the other half when it dries. Whew! Dinner at a party tonight so no more dishes to speak of until dinner tomorrow. Both dh and I have nasty colds so the work goes slowwwwwly.

I've had a busy day in the kitchen. I made 2 loaves of bread, and a big pot of cabbage soup and another pot of potato soup, using some of the ham stock from yesterday's boiled ham. I also put pieces of ham in the potato soup.

I now have a roast beef in the oven, with carrots around the roast. I decided to make butter tart squares, while the oven was on, and I just took them out. Our whole apartment smelled good today!

Oh my there were so many great smells coming from my RV today. I had the spiral ham and the smoked turkey cooking, Cajun dirty rice and sweet potato casserole with praline toppings, cheesy potatoes, turkey gravy all sorts of yummy food smells. We had a wonderful meal with the family.
Everyone just left and I am laying in bed with my tablet resting.
Beautiful day in Oklahoma today.

Putting away Fall decorations and deciding "what to put where" for Christmas decor. There are lovely sounds coming from my CD player, though!

Pumpkin Pie. There was some left over from the large store bought one that someone brought for Thanksgiving, but it was left out, and had already got moldy. So I made another one pretty much from scratch. (I did use canned pumpkin) I had intended to use the unroll-from-a-box pie crusts that I brought. But they were (way) out of date, and seemed iffy. So I made my first ever made-from-scratch pie crust. It looks good but we haven't tried it yet.

not right this minute, but earlier today I made several pans of touch of grace biscuits. Made them early this morning and took them to my family. Passed two neighbors as I was walking up the street with the biscuits and both said they would love to have biscuits. Know they were just making conversation, but I came home and made each a pan of biscuits. So lots of biscuits have baked in my oven today.

Just made a lasagna and had some for supper. DS and my grandson are here so it was just us 3, as DH is on a hunting trip. The lasagna was really good.

Now I'm thinking of sticking a couple of pumpkin pies in the oven for tomorrow, since DS is monopolizing the TV watching Mizzou play Texas A&M. Go Tigers!

Mariilyn Sue, have to update my posting. There is something in my oven this minute. You mentioned the apple dumplings before, never made them before. Looked at the recipe and thought my family would love these. We always eat breakfast together on Sunday mornings before church. Dumplings are cooking in the oven and I plan to reheat them in the morning. Can't wait, the smell is wonderful. Might just try one when they finish cooking.
