Another Great Aldi Find

I shop at Aldi for most of my groceries, paper products, and cleaning supplies these days. I have been very impressed with nearly everything I've tried, and I make it a point to try new things every so often. They have a lot of German specialty foods around the holidays, and today I tried their almond stollen. I'm not a fan of fruitcake but used to make stollen and bought it frequently when living in Austria. I'm also suspicious of packaged cakes, finding many stale and dry. But the Aldi stollen is really, really good, especially with coffee. Rich, dense, with a very nice almond flavor. I recommend it! There's a marzipan one, too, but that sounded too sweet.

A new Aldi's just opened not far from us. There is another one on the other end of town but I had never shopped there. DH and I went in a few days after the madness of the grand opening wore off. It was ok but I would not buy meat there, mainly because I am very picky about where I do buy any meat when I do buy it. I had been told their chocolate is very good. My friend was right. They sell, for $1.99, large bars of very good Austrian and German chocolate. I would go back just for that. But not for much else. Maybe some fruit, and the breads and bakery items looked ok. We typically make only 1-2 grocery stops a week at our favorite regional store (Publix) and occasionally go to Fresh Market or Whole Foods. No Trader Joe's here, sadly.

Jessica bought me a jar a couple of years ago because I love pumpkin butter and it's something that just cannot be canned consistently and safely. I didn't get much of it, the girls loved it. Amanda said it tasted like pumpkin pie filling, so I guess it was pretty sweet, but they loved it that way. I liked it too, but I also like the Peter Pan Honey Roast peanut butter, which everyone says is inordinately sweet. It is. LOL That's why I like it, I guess. Annie

That's what I'm exactly afraid of with enameled cast iron made in China! Now I'm glad I bought Le Creuset, Staub, and some pieces made in France at Bed, Bath, & Beyond (can't remember the brand now, but it was a little less expensive than the others). So far, no trouble with any of them. And I don't "baby" them, I actually made the no-knead bread in a Le Creuset 5 qt. casserole. I did buy them discounted at the outlet or in Home Goods, T.J. Maxx, Tuesday Morning, and Marshall's. I even have an All-Clad piece (made in the USA-my favorite thing) and a Scanpan from one of those stores. But with all the other good reviews, I'm still tempted to check out the ones in Aldi's, even though I don't need another pot! I seem to be awfully tempted with kitchen (cooking) things!

Yes, owning the processing center is what is called vertical integration. Allows for increased innovation in that a company can begin developing new products with the raw materials as well as expanding into similar products/ development in the same plant. In the case of the Fort Wayne plant, some dairy farmers who had contracts with Dean Foods to supply milk are losing their contracts. Other dairy farms have gained new contracts supplying the WalMart processing center. Nothing new here. The dairy industry has been hurting for years. Partly a victim of their own success....burgeoning supply because better breeding has resulted in cows that give more milk than ever. And a victim of decreasing demand; Americans are consuming less milk per capita than ever. Probably some measurable degree of that can be traced to demographics such as an immigrant population that has a higher percentage of lactose intolerance than Americans of European ancestry. While traditional supermarket operators around the country, such as Kroger Co., Publix Super Markets and H-E-B, have long operated their own milk bottling plants and other dairy-processing facilities, the move is a first for Walmart. As reported in a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, Walmart’s investment in dairy processing follows Kroger’s opening of a fully automated milk plant in Colorado and Albertsons’ debut this summer of a new, versatile milk bottling facility in Pennsylvania. Kroger now supplies 100% of its own fluid milk to all of its stores, the article said.

Our Aldi is yucky, and Prince Charming has told me not to go there...he said it was dirty and nasty looking..oh well it's Winn Dixie I go..He goes to Walmart for cokes & stuff.

Our ALDI is sparkling. Maybe you should write the company an email and tell them about it! I don't think the honchos would like to hear that their store is yucky.

My Aldi is heads and tails MUCH cleaner and more inviting over our local Walmart. Plus they have the best fresh produce! I guess it all depends on the area.

Someone told me that ours was dirty and I took them back and pointed out it was not dirty it was just different. Guess they thought the opened boxes made it dirty.. I go there always.. Love it.. Saves me bunches.

I agree, Walmart is much grimier. I love, love, love my Aldi. Best fruits and veggies at the best price. There is one thing I go to Walmart for and that is their bean and corn salsa, which is fantastic at a fantastic price (1.98 for a big jar). But I rarely go in there, mostly because I find their fruits and vegetables lacking.

I have seen that stollen there before but have never been tempted, since my mother makes a rather different stollen. Her's is more like a cake/bread with fruit in it, no powdered sugar topping and less dense. I might have to give it a try on your recommendation.

I have 2 Aldis within about 10-15 miles and they are both spotless...I can not imagine shopping any where else...The money that we save if unbelievable....But, you know we have people in this area that would rather go to Giant Eagle and spend 59 cents on a pound of bananas compared to the 22 cents at Aldi's...Their reasoning is, they get gas perks at the other store.....I'll take the savings over the so called perks.......We are confirmed Aldi shoppers!

I have found Aldis can vary greatly. For many years I'd avoided them like the plague--because the one near me was absolutely disgusting. Filthy, produce rotting (and smelling), etc. Then I moved and on the recommendation of a couple of other local food writers, I checked out a couple in this area. They're wonderful--clean, bright, easy to shop in. They are a good place to get imported goods at a good price.

But I do need to add this--the local Walmart is also quite clean and decent as well. I have noticed that in this 'new' area, people take a lot more pride in doing their jobs well-even if they do work in a discount store.
