The turkey refused to roast; or

The Vegetarian Thanksgiving Dinner

...or...

The Biggest Flop I ever served.

Because of our husbands' work shifts, neighbors and I decided to have a combined Thanksgiving celebration yesterday. Wonderful, I thought. More time to plan and cook things in stages.

I made and froze the cornbread for the homemade stuffing one day; made dinner rolls the next; pies the third day. Everything was on schedule; all the ingredients were on hand.

I got up Sunday morning and made the dressing. I washed and dried the 8-lb. turkey. It was the smallest turkey I have ever cooked. The instructions said it would need 2 3/4 hours to cook. I allowed 3 1/2 hours before serving time for the turkey to cook.

I popped it in the oven and set the timer. I sat the table and put the potatoes on to boil. Neighbors came with their sides.

Three hours passed. The turkey registered 140 degrees inside. I put it in another HOUR - 160 degrees. The oven was registering 350 on the thermometer.

The other food was getting cold. I tried slicing the turkey; the juices were pink; the flesh was not cooked. We decided to go ahead and eat dinner without it.

By the time we finished the pie; the turkey was finally cooked. I sent everyone home with hot, roasted turkey for the next day.

I will hang my head in shame and cover my face with a dirty dishtowel until next Thanksgiving.

I am 55 years old. I have been helping, or making alone, Thanksgiving dinners since I was 10. I have never, ever had this happen before.
