I just got this in an email....not sure which is true, but I do know some of them are. Sad...I guess we'll always have Target and Walmart!

Ann Taylor closing 117 stores nationwide.

A company spokeswoman said the company hasn't revealed which stores will

be

shuttered. It will let the stores that will close this fiscal year know

over the next month

Eddie Bauer to close more stores.

Eddie Bauer has already closed 27 shops in the first quarter and plans

to

close up to two more outlet stores by the end of the year.

Cache closing stores.

Women's retailer Cache announced that it is closing 20 to 23 stores this

year.

Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, Catherines closing 150 stores nationwide.

The owner of retailers Lane Bryant , Fashion Bug, Catherines Plus Sizes

will

close about 150 underperforming stores this year. The company hasn't

provided a list of specific store closures and can't say when it will

offer that info, spokeswoman Brooke Perry said today.

Talbots, J. Jill closing stores.

About a month ago, Talbots announced that it will be shuttering all 78

of

its kids and men 's stores. Now the company says it will close another

underperforming stores. The 22 stores will be a mix of Talbots women's

and

J Jill, another chain it owns. The closures will occur this fiscal

year,

according to a company press release.

Gap Inc. closing 85 stores

In addition to its namesake chain, Gap also owns Old Navy and Banana

Republic . The company said the closures - all planned for fiscal 2008

-
will be weighted toward the Gap brand.

Foot Locker to close 140 stores

In the company press release and during its conference call with

analysts

today, it did not specify where the future store closures - all planned

in

fiscal 2008 - will be. The company could not be immediately reached for

comment

Wicke s is going out of business

Wickes Furniture is going out of business and closing all of its

stores.

Wickes, a 37-year-old retailer that targets middle-income customers,

filed

for bankruptcy protection last month.

Goodbye Levitz / BOMBAY - closed already The furniture ret ailer, which

is

going out of business. Levitz first announced it was going out of

business

and closing all 76 of its stores in December. The retailer dates back

to

1910 when Richard Levitz opened his first furniture store in Lebanon ,

PA. In

the 1960s, the warehouse/showroom concept brought Levitz to the

forefront of

the furniture industry. The local Levitz closures will follow the

shutdown of Bombay .

Zales, Piercing Pagoda closing stores

The owner of Zales and Piercing Pagoda previously said it plans to close

stores by Jul y 31. Today, it announced that it is closing another 23

underperforming stores. The company said it's not providing a list of

specific store closures. Of the 105 locations planned for closure, 50

are kiosks and 55 are stores.

Disney Store owner has the right to close 98 stores The Walt Disney

Company

announced it acquired about 220 Disney Stores from subsidiaries of The

Children's Place Retail Stores. The exact number of stores acquired

will

depend on negotiations with landlords. Those subsidiaries of Children's

Place filed for bankruptcy protection in late March. In the news

release,

Disney said it has also obtained the right to close about 98 Disney

Stores

in the U.S. The press release didn't list those stores.

Home Depot store closings

Nearly 7+ months after its chief executive said there were no plans to

cut

the number of its core retail stores, The Home Depot Inc. announced

Thursday that it is shuttering 15 of them amid a slumping US. economy

and

housing market. The move will affect 1,300 employees. It is the first

time the world's largest home improvement store chain has ever closed a

flagship

store for performance reasons. Its shares rose almost 5 percent.

The Atlanta-based company said the underperforming U.S. stores being

closed

represent less than 1 percent of its existing stores. They will be

shuttered within the next two months .

CompUSA (CLOSED) clarifies details on store closings Any extended

warranties purchased for products through CompUSA will be honored by a

third-party provider, Assurant Solutions. Gift cards, rain checks, and

rebates purchased prior to December 12 can be redeemed at any time

during

the final sale. For those who have a gadget currently in for service

with

CompUSA, the repair will be completed and the gadget will be returned to

owners.

Macy's - 9 stores

Movie Gallery 160 stores will close as part of reorganization plan to

exit bankruptcy.

The video rental company plans to close 400 of 3,500 Movie Gallery and

Hollywood Video stores in addition to the 520 locations the video rental

chain closed last fall.

Pep Boys - 33 stores

Sprint Nextel - 125 retail locations

New Sprint Nextel CEO Dan Hesse appears to have inherited a company

bleeding

subscribers by the thousands, and will now officially be dropping the ax

on

4,000 employees and 125 retail locations. Amid the loss of 639,000

postpaid

customers in the fourth quarter, Sprint will be cutting a total of 6.7%

of

its work force (following the 5,000 layoffs last year) and 8% of

company-owned brick-and-mortar stores, while remaining mute on other

rumors

that it will consolidate its headquarters in Kansas . Sprint Nextel

shares

are down $2.89, or nearly 25%, at the time of this writing.

J. C. Penney, Lowe's and Office Depot are scaling back

Ethan Allen Interiors - The company announced plans to close 12 of 300+

stores in an effort to cut costs.

Wilsons the Leather Experts - 158 stores

Pacific Sunwear will close its 154 Demo stores after a review of

strategic

alternatives for the urban-apparel brand Seventy-four underperforming

Demo stores closed last May.

Sharper Image : The company recently filed for bankruptcy protection

and

announced that 90 of its 184 stores are closing. The retailer will

still

operate 94 stores to pay off debts, but 90 of these stores have

performed poorly and also may close.

Bombay Company

The company unveiled plans to close all 384 U.S.-based Bombay Company

stores. The company's online storefront has discontinued operations.

KB Toys posted a list of 356 stores that it is closing around the

United

States as part of its bankruptcy reorganization. To see the list of

Dillard's to Close More Stores

Dillard's Inc. said it will continue to focus on closing

underperforming

stores, reducing expenses and improving its merchandise in 2008. At the

company's annual shareholder meeting, CEO William Dillard II said the

company will close another six underperforming stores this year.

How 'bout that.... I don't have most of those stores in my area anyways!

I feel bad for those who do and who have gift cards.

Maybe what will probably happen is that sales will soar and some closings won't happen....

Most of those stores shouldn't have been opened anyway...It's only because the companies get greedy...

Susie - thank you! The doors are part of our new foyer/garage addition, and with the sidelights and transom it's a 10' x 10' entry. We stained them ourselves which was quite a job, and unfortunately the afternoon sun hits them pretty hard so we'll probably be spending a lot of time maintaining them, but I really like them. On a good night, you can see the moon through the transom. Allison, thank you so much. I was thinking it would be about 1 yard for each chair. Surprisingly, there were none listed on ebay. Guess I was hoping some people would want to make custom slips and sell the ones that came with the chairs, but it doesn't appear so. I love what I've seen of your style, and really admire how your casual and more formal furniture pieces work so well together. That's something I need to work on, since I like both. I can't wait to post pictures of other rooms soon and get advice for furniture placement and paint colors. Right now, almost all of the rooms have tools, drywall and flooring piled up in them, since we're just entering the finishing stage of the whole house remodel. I'm so looking forward to having my house back to normal and get to the fun stuff! I think I'll keep an eye on the Highgate table over the next week or so. It has such nice thick legs, and would make a nice coffee table. That will probably be my next post!

Nothing at all on their website or phone voicemail about stores closing, but news articles elsewhere say Sears is closing all their TGI stores. Not surprising - I knew both The Great Indoors and Home Depot's Expo Design Center would collapse as soon as the housing bubble burst, and shopper traffic at the local TGI has been sparse over the last few years. I'll miss them, though - huge stores where you can look around at higher-end appliances, cabinetry, plumbing fixtures, tiles, flooring, and furnishings all at once. There's no anywhere nearby that sells, or at least displays, most of this stuff, and those that do tend to be small boutiques that aren't open late or on Sundays. Alot of the independent stores that sell these items have closed their doors recently too.

Actually, ALL of Hancocks stores are closing. Over the years it has become increasingly difficult to find anything worth buying there. But, still is was there if you needed something that you could settle for. Quiltsandquacks, it is not that simple that people did not support the store. There are many complicated factors that contributed to this. I was always there to support the store when the store had what I wanted to buy. Over the last decade, in particular, Hancocks let ME down with the poor selection and the drastic move towards fleece inspired awfulness. I kept visiting the store and leaving empty handed until I quit going in as often and I quit buying much of anything. If they still had the quality of selection that they used to have, you can bet that I would be in there shopping! I can't buy what they do not offer. And, I do not wish to buy what they offered. They have the fleece on at 80% right now. There is still an awful few tons of it left. It seems that I am not the only one who loathes that cheap stuff. It is my opinion that the overstocking of cheap fleece is one of the contributing factors in their demise. But, there are many factors that have lead to this closing. There are the dynamics of corporate structure and changing demographics, to name but a couple. It is almost an old fashioned idea to assume that just because there are customers that there is success in business. Corporations are convoluted entities and do not always follow that path. Simple business models do not always apply anymore. Add to those factors the fact that there is no production of the old fashioned fabrics that many of us grew up sewing with. The vendors cannot get those fabrics because they are not being produced anymore. We have much less land left for producing nice plant and animal based fibers in this world and we have an suffocating amount of old plastic jugs and petroleum based chemical that get made into "fabrics". THAT is what that fleece is made of, recycled plastic milk jugs. Ugh!!! The Walmart in my community has recently begun to carry a few fabrics, again. For a simple cotton they have some product by Waverly, I think. It seems fairly decent for what it is. Ultimately, Hancocks let ME down and quit selling the things that I needed to continue to sew. So, now they are gone. I see that there are some newer types of sewing businesses that are opening up, but they seem to have a different direction. They seem to be located in more affluent parts of the burbs and cater to people who have money to come in, take classes on making things like hand bags and piecing, They have become a vendor for people with a lot of disposable income, but not a vendor where just real everyday sewing people will go in to buy a couple of yards of wool crepe or some nice cotton twill or swiss dot. They are more likely to offer you the chance, for a price, to come in and buy an independent pattern for a child garment and the "kit' to make it with. Then, you can spend $30 to make a kids tshirt that you could have gone over to Kohls and bought for five bucks. It is more like hobby sewing than like old fashioned sewing that was born of passion, creativity and necessity and supplied by numerous fabric stores in almost every small town.

On a trip back to Cincinnati a couple of years ago when my father was in the hospital, it was unexpectedly colder than I had packed for so I decided to go to the mall right across the highway from the hotel we were staying in. The place was desolate. One of the anchor stores had just closed, another had apparently closed much earlier, and inside the mall at least half of the smaller store locations were vacant and boarded up, with no signs that other stores were planning to move in. While some of the blame for stores closing can certainly be placed on Internet shopping, there are many other factors involved. The rampant drive over the years to build ever more new stores and new malls, eventually reached the saturation point, where each customer at each new store is merely one that isn't going to the older store. Coupled with the overall decline in the economy in much of the country where all of the better-paying jobs were shipped overseas, until all that remains is various retail jobs, which frequently don't pay enough for the employees to shop in the stores where they work. Another big, big factor in many of the store chain closings, (Toys 'R' Us in particular.) is the merger and acquisition and buyouts that have been going on for a few decades. Another company or an outside organization or coalition come in and buys the company and finances it through massive amounts of borrowed money, secured by the real-estate assets of the company they are buying. In the case of Toys 'R' Us, three private capital firms bought the then struggling company, and burdened the company with $5 billion in debt, then between the millions in management fees they have the company pay to them, and the hundreds of millions in interest on the massive debt, devour any and all gross profits on sales, leaving little to nothing (or less than nothing) to invest in keeping the company running. I think in the last year Toys 'R' Us had over $11 billion in sales revenue, but between the increasingly thin profit margins due to competition, and the massive interest payments owed, it lost maybe $400 million. The private capital firms have squeezed all the juice out of the company that they can, have written off all of the losses and are tossing aside its dry, drained husk, and will now be moving on to the next plump, juicy company to parasitize and plunder.

I e-mailed a well known restaurant in the city where my daughter lives, intending to give her a gift certificate for Christmas. It has been about 4 days since I inquired and now I'm wondering if they are having problems. It is not a chain, but a local restaurant (two branches in the city) that has been in business for years, but I have seen several businesses go down the drain that have been in business for years. Now that that thought has come to my mind, it makes me a little leery if I do hear from them.

Mary, restaurants especially are suffering in this downturn. I do think you can buy dine out on me type gift certificates from American Express or Visa. The person getting the gift gets to decide which restaurant they want to spend it at so you avoid closure problems.

That is really scary that so many stores are closing. We don't have Mervyn's here but my CA friends told me they are closing. I used to shop there in CA.

I don't think there's 3 stores on that list that I've shopped at in the past 10 years. They've always been to high-priced for my wallet, anyway.

As to gift certificates? I don't think I'd put money into them this year, because you never know what company might be next to go out of business. You can always give a Visa or American Express gift card--more flexible, because they can be used anywhere, and less chance of the company going out of business.

My opinion why many are closing.
Very poor quality of clothing
too high prices made who knows where
poor or non existent or no caring help
extensive selection of items--way too many duplicate of styles with a slight variations
lack of care instructions and/or hard to find material included
poor styling/sloppy styles

I agree with some of the above posters, never shopped at most of them because they were way overpriced. Home Depot put in a new huge store right across the street from an established Lowes and huge Wal-Mart. Not a big city either, it might have lasted 5 years.

I've found some terrific deals at JC Penney, Dillards, Macy's, and the Disney Store this past year. I like to start shopping at 50-75% off. Sometimes they even compete with thrift store prices for brand new items. I bought the majority of the kids and dh's clothes there. Sears had some awesome deals too. The quality of the clothes aren't anything I'd pay full price for, but they were better than Wal-Mart.

Around here Steve & Barrys closed. I know they are in the process of closing more stores. Also, I went into a Linen N Things store and they were going out of business and the sign said they were closing all stores in the U.S. That's scary. I have only shopped at these two stores acouple of times in the past so it won't really affect me but I do feel really bad for the employees. I'm really hoping things turn around fast but I don't see that happening any time soon.

I went to Mervyns today.Their sales aren't that great yet.They had 50% off jewelry,75% off the clearance rack and some of that stuff has been on those racks for months,and everything else was 30% off.To me that's a normal sale for them.I came out with just a set of matchbox cars and trucks that had been 12.00 for 8 something.I hadn't seen that set anywhere else,so i got it for my GGS for xmas.

In my town, Walmart has layed off many of its associates and cut the hours of most floor and door greeter employees to 20/week or less.

One elderly lady, a checker, was telling those of us in her lane, that she was working 40 hours and now is only scheduled for 12 hours this week.

I realize this is a tourist town, but this action is unwarranted - Walmart has THE MONEY to take care of its people - it just chooses not to.

This scenerio isn't unique to Walmart - MOST retailers are doing the same thing, or worse yet - going out of business. I just don't know that these retirees/disabled workers are supposed to do to survive.

It's such a shame that these older workers/disabled workers/uneducated workers and single parents are being displaced in this manner - they are the ones that made this country, by doing the grunt labor, and they can't just run out and get another job. They aren't working for low wages because they WANT to - they are forced to because of this economy - a real sad statement of the economical status of our country.

One of my sons has several college degrees and can't find a job - even a low-paying job (he is currently working on his Ph.D)! His wife has a masters degree in forensic science and is working at a retail tourist shop because the government has a freeze on new jobs in her field of study!!! They live in Washington D.C.

The economy is in peril FOR SURE!

We have a brand new Steve and Barry's, just had a BIG grand opening and now there are signs up, Going out of business...But inside the store, there are also "Hiring" signs....It's a sad situation....

All this economic mess means, bottom line, that this country is FINALLY going to get back to reality. No more fantasyland for businesses, or consumers. Gluttony ends. For businesses -- your unrealsitic bean-counters (projecting wildy impossible growth) have to now live in reality. To the consumers, who overpent on charge cards and are now over their heads in debt, welcome to the real world, where you only get what you actually pay for. Unfortunately, a lot of unskilled, low-wage people are gonna be out of work. They'll just be joining the high-skilled, MBA educated people (like my husband) who's been there for going on 9 months (yeah, the economy started tanking a LONG time ago. . . .)
